And has, for the most part, vanished thanks to the market meltdown - there is indeed always a silver lining. ;)

I've seen 3 Geelys on the road, and they were all the same dull blue colour - probably the same car. :erm:

I was reading somewhere that Geely has pulled out of the market...shouldn't have been sold in the first place!

I agree with you 100% on not buying new and taking the inevitable knock on price. I disagree, however, on being a "non enthusiast" and buying a Citi.

The original Golf, and then the Citi were always aimed at enthusiasts, and I can personally have as much fun in a Citi today, as I did when I was rallying Golf Gti's "back in the day". NOTHING has changed about the dynamics of the car which remains eminently "chuckable" on the road, and capable of keeping up with many newer cars if driven by somebody who knows what he/she's doing. Something that CAN NOT be said about driving a Chana, Chery or Atoz.....

Now please allow the Citi to retire with some dignity...rather than compare it with cars that are only just keeping up with it, that were designed 30 years later.

the only reason it feels like your going that fast is cause of the body roll, turning a corner at 60 km/h is like any other car doing it at 120. Thats why you feel like your flying, and as for keeping up with new cars ? i wouldn't mind seeing it keep up with an ST :p

I disagree with you...I raced the things for years, and there is very little that has to be done to make a golf handle sweetly...unlike an Opel that had to have its front shocks cranked several mm forward befiore the thing could go anywhere!

If you have too much body roll in a Golf, you are either driving like an idiot or your tyres are underinflated.

I repeat...CORRECTLY driven, the Golf is still a brilliant car to drive in anger...and even when some Doris is driving, it is a hell of a lot more forgiving than some cars I can think of...

Thats the problem right there Fazda...

You need to drive it in anger to get anything out of it, and thats also when you make the biggest mistakes and can kill people since the damn thing is so unsafe...

Sorry Toxic, but I disagree with you.........again, going back to racing days...we were able to take a Golf straight on to the track and then do some minor tweaking later...the guys in the Opels and BM's had to spend days re-inventing their suspension settings before going anywhere.

The Golf is also inherently an understeering car, whereas Billy the Bob will oversteer his BM off the road in the first corner...and Doris in the Opel will be so busy fighting torque steer that he won't even make the corner....;)

Can the next person who is blinded by crap marketing and obsession with a rubbish old car be banned as well.

Fazda : You mention track ALOT, and I'm not disputing that, I had two citi golfs when I was younger and they were great back then, esp for racing. Now they're not great for anything OTHER than racing, and should not be allowed on the roads because every tom dick and charlie thinks they can race them and they endanger innocent people, and are just plain dangerous in an accident of any kind.

As for there being a Citi faster than me.. yes there is, I don't doubt that.. but there isn't a Citi that is even 10% as safe as the car I drive.....

Toxic, it's just reference to a common jibe in motoring circles - there is ALWAYS a Citi faster than you...

As for the rest of the discussion, I wholeheartedly agree. The Citi's time is long gone - there is no justifiable reason to spend R100k on a new 30year old car. Times have moved on, and so should VW. The Citi is a relic from a bygone era.

I don't dispute the place it holds in the cultural makeup of Saffers, but people... please... it's time to let go.

Erm...shall we just settle this one with the fact that a car is usually as safe as the idiot behind the wheel................

Start by taking advanced driving lessons and learning how to AVOID an accident, before you start counting and relying on airbags to get you out of trouble!

But Fazda, that's half the problem right there. Because it's one of the cheapest new cars on the market & young, STUPID people want the 'street cred', or old, STUPID people can't afford anything better but still want a new car, you end up with a lot of Citis being driven by stupid folk.

Sometimes society needs protection from its own idiocy.

GF.A!

I like my BMW ;)

Oh dear...I thought that owning a BMW was like being a member of Alcaholics Anonymous.......you kept very quiet about it, unless you were very comfortable with a group of friends, and you could actually stand up and say "My name is Doris and I drive a BMW"............:p.

Well, er.... you see... ahhhh....

Nah, I don't quite fit the mould of the typical BMW driver. At the age of 29, I'm the proud owner of an E39 523i Auto so I'm not going to be intimidating anything except standard 1.4 carb Citis. But, R40k got me climate control, airbags, ABS, etc. etc. so I'm happy.

LOL...whatever floats your boat :D

I had better make myself scarce before I start a BMW owners rebellion against any future post that I make around here !! ;)
