The VW Up! Thread

The article mentions it looks like VWSA will let market forces to determine what occurs.

I do agree with you about the 3-door Up!

I was referring to the "nonsense" you mention of zero availability of the 5-door Up! to protect the Vivo.

I think Vivo sales will take a fair knock now that the 5-door Up! is finally out locally.

Yeah... I'll believe it when I see it. I was privy to the... erm... strategising communicated to dealers with the 3-door's launch. The retail market is difficult to gauge sometimes, and there was a definite drive from VWSA's marketing arm to shield the Vivo from the up! even then. Luckily for them the up! has, until now, remained a bit of a novelty compared to the established old guard that is the Vivo. The 5-door's launch will make the same marketing folk nervous afresh.

Of course this could all be - and hopefully is - a precursor to the up! being assembled in Uitenhage... :)

I just placed an order for the new A4 as I didn't know that the 5 door variant was coming to our shores...

Is it weird that I'm lusting over the Up! more than the shiny new A4??

Yes you are very weird. As the A4 is very expensive ZAR in base form. I won't ask you what the model you ordered actually cost. You can tell us if you want

A4 to an Up! hmm...

It's the 2lt Design line, with a few bells and whistles.

The Up! just seems like a much more fun car to drive - not as serious as some of the other German vehicles out there.

Perhaps what I'm really lusting after is a simpler time...

The 'nonsense' I'm talking about is informed by a good few years of experience at VW dealer level. Yes, the Vivo has its advantages over the up!, but many people who have bought Vivos instead of up!s thus far - in my experience - have done so because they were dissuaded by the 3-door layout. Fact is, unless you specifically need the extra room the Vivo offers, the up! is the better car. It's safer, more economical and far more refined.

There is undoubtedly a market for both, but with the Vivo being locally built that won't satisfy VWSA - they need Vivo to sell to its absolute maximum potential, and the 5-door up! will impact that.

Vivo will be phased out.

The Vivo has had many premium upgrades including Tiptronic so I don't expect it going off the market anytime soon.

Current Vivo will stop production, current new Polo will become Vivo. Probably early 2017.

Is a smashed one then a f@%k UP ?

It's not secret the Up! is one VW I like, but why oh why make an Angry Up!? Are they any good offroad?

I do think some of the 5 door units will steal sales from the Vivo... But what we mustn't forget is how South Africans love the Polo brand and will most likely continue buying the Vivo in large quantities - they are also better fleet cars IMO

The Vivo should die - VWSA made billions from selling the stale moldy Mk1 Golf decades after it's use-by date. Why do the same shameful thing with the the rattle-cage-wie-wou-'n-ou-polo koop nonense?

Some people are short, and the height helps them see the road better. I doubt that it works as an off road vehicle.
