The weight loss thread

Are you arguing the injection is an unhealthy way to loose weight, or it's not but diet and exercise is just healthier?
Is taking injection for weight loss something you guys come up with on your own (and then asked Doctor who gave you prescription) or is that something Doctor suggested without you asking them ?

And if one isn't losing muscle?
Apart from muscle loss, there are a bunch of other things to watch out for with these meds. Because people eat so little, nutrient deficiencies are common, and the rapid weight loss can cause gallstones and digestive issues like nausea or constipation. You can also lose some bone density, your metabolism can slow down, and you might end up regaining the weight quickly if you stop the injections. For older people especially, less muscle and weaker bones can mean more frailty down the line. So it’s not that the meds are evil, just that there are real trade-offs people should know about.

Thanks doc.

Yes, it is not healthy to lose a lot of muscle.
Right, then you're arguing the injections are unhealthy.

I would counter with; the dosage is controlled.

Secondly, you have no concrete stats to prove that muscle mass lost, going from obesity to not overweight, is a significant issue. (Remember, we're talking millions upon millions of dosages of semaglutide, tirzepatide etc having been prescribed in the past ten years).

The health damage of obesity far exceeds any possible muscle loss issues.

Are you a personal trainer or fitness influencer?

You'll see my story a few posts up.
Out of curiosity, how's your weight/BMI doing?

I’m definitely not saying obesity isn’t a massive health issue, it absolutely is. Losing excess fat is one of the best things anyone can do for their health, but it is important to do it in a healthy way.

It’s also true that the GLP-1 meds can cause more lean mass loss than normal dieting, especially if someone isn’t eating enough protein or doing any resistance training. That’s not me being dramatic, even the clinical trials show a chunk of the weight lost is lean body mass.

Losing too much muscle as you get older can mess with strength, balance, metabolic rate, all of that, so it’s not something to just ignore.

Fair enough. As a layman, it seems hectic reading on pros & cons but I suppose doctors would know what to do.

for me, at this stage of my life / journey, the benefits outweighed the risks, and its paying off in a massive way

Also, its a big thing, childhood trauma of small town doctors, have me terrified of needles, so overcoming the weekly anxiety of stabbing myself is a big thing

So weight the things mentioned in your article:
22 per cent lower risk of a cardiac arrest
11 per cent lower risk of heart failure
9 per cent lower risk of a heart attack
7 per cent lower risk of ischaemic stroke
24 per cent less likely to have liver failure
22 per cent less likely to have respiratory failure
12 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease
lower risk of some mental health issues, such as substance use disorders, suicidal ideation and schizophrenia.

Second study: 20 per cent lower risk of having a heart attack or stroke, or dying from coronary heart disease than those given a dummy injection after 2.75 years.

VS

2.5 times more likely to develop drug-induced acute pancreatitis.
30 per cent higher risk of nausea or vomiting
11 per cent higher risk of arthritis
6 per cent higher risk of low blood pressure.

The nausea I can attest to, first week I felt nauseous, but it's gone now.
Another plus for me, I snore way less. And I have slept many a night in a separate room due to snoring to give my wife a good nights rest.

My biggest “win” I felt almost immediately was lower to almost no inflammation pain

The downside… having to manage being full of **** , constipation is a struggle, but a combo of black coffee and carrots for breakfast does the trick

Diets really are easy.

Roughly, it comes down to:
* 1g / kg body weight of fats (1g/kg is kinda the minimum to maintain hormonal balances...?)
* 1-2g / kg body weight of protein (if you are actively doing sport, closer to 2 is better)
* balance as carbs (especially if you are sporty)

4kcals per gram of protein and carbs
9kcals per gram of fat
(25-40kcals/kg/per day, depending on activity level, etc)

Biggest question is how many grams of nutrients per 100g/measure of real food ... This is where the healthy choices come to play
So: Voluminous foods (veggies!), not lots of foods (e.g. not plates and plates of pasta until you are full) and fats/proteins helps to keep you satiated.

yeah, and what nobody wants to hear: sugar and alcohol is "from the devil", with artificial sugars possibly the ugly step sister

And as a friend once told me, after I rewarded myself with an enormous waffle & ice cream + syrup: You are not a dog, don't rewards yourself with treats!

No need to spend fortunes on injections, irrespective of (non-medical specialist provided, without eliciting it from them) justifications.
Also, be active as it allows you to get away with quite a bit!

Ah, another expert. Thanks for your contribution.

if you’ve cracked weight loss with a paragraph of macros and a motivational quote… why are billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies wasting time on GLP-1 research?
Forget Mounjaro you should be a billionaire by now.

Eskom failing?
Economy collapsing?
Obesity epidemic?
No problem we just needed your KG × grams formula.

Honestly, the entire global medical community must feel silly right now.
Decades of peer-reviewed research, endocrinology, metabolic studies, neurohormonal pathways… when all along the secret was:

‘Eat veggies. Don’t be a dog.’

Please, publish this diet ASAP.
Nobel Prize committees love this kind of breakthrough.
