The XBOX 360 FAQ

@AR_GTR - I think that be caused by a video cable that's loose if I'm not mistaken? But good to hear anyway bru :D

I think the following really really should be in the FAQ!

What do I do if my 360 is in one room and my router in another room and I want to get on Live?

The obvious answer would be to run CAT5 cable from the router to the Xbox 360. But there is an alternative, wireless. Yes, Microsoft does sell their proprietary dongle for R1000 and it works as expected but you can have a much better and way cheaper DIY solution that is more versatile and is not restricted to only giving the 360 access to the net.

Basically, the idea is this: if you have an old wireless router laying around the house you can load a 3rd party firmware called DD-WRT on it and turn the router into a wireless bridge. (Check here if your router supports DD-WRT. If it doesn't, just sprawl the classifieds or post in the WUG section of this forum, someone is bound to have a 2nd hand one they're willing to let go of. Actually, I know for a fact that there are WUG users that wanna let go of some of their old equipment.

The idea behind Client Bridge mode is that essentially, the client router obtains a connection from the main router (wirelessly) and then shares that connection through the ethernet ports. There are good guides across the net on how to do this, I personally started off with this one.

Also, streaming media from your PC to the 360 over the bridge works perfectly. My bridging router is a Linksys WRT54GL and supports 54Mbps max but that's enough to stream 720p content without problems. For 1080p I think a router that supports 108Mbps would be a better bet.

For the most part, setting this up wasn't too difficult, it's well worth the effort and when you have it up and running, it'll be very satisfying. ;)

...

If 3rd party firmware doesn't do it for you, you could just buy and actual client bridge, like this one ;)

They're cheaper than the official 360 kit and also support multiple devices. This particular model supports wireless N which is a bonus.

Ok, I am going to ask a stupid stupid question, so indulge me:

HOW THE HELL DO YOU SETUP XBOX SO THAT I CAN SEE IT IN MY NETWORK NEIGHBOURHOOD???!!!!

That is driving me insane, I can connect 100% with xbox live and downloaded the new dashboard, but trying to connect something like media centre or tversity is a pain, the xbox just flatly does not see my pc and vice versa

All my connections run through a normal telkom router, but nothing, nada, zip!

Ok, enough of me exploding, oh yes, I am on vista ultimate

Since I got my 360 a year ago I haven't ever got WMP11 to work with streaming to my console but with TVersity it's super simple, no port forwarding, no firewall tinkering, nothing. Just install TVersity and choose what you wanna share and it works, well for me at least.

Which Telkom router do you have exactly?

There is a LENGTHY thread on streaming problems/solutions on the official xbox forums that I used a while back, have you gone through that?

I am using the normal telkom marconi router. When I open my network (caring and sharing centre), and I click on map local network, I can see the xbox fine, but I cannot access the xbox, when I work on my xbox, and select video and go to "computer", it does not pick up my pc no matter what, it keeps on failing, even though I can connect to live without any hassles

Nope i have not seen the thread on the xbox forum, is it on the xbox.com site?

The thread is on forums.xbox.com don't ask me where exactly but it's there. I'll find it for you and post the link but for now let's confirm one thing, your PC can see the Xbox fine but not the other way round, right?

Have you tried the latest version of TVersity?

I think this is the thread: http://forums.xbox.com/1/7738641/ShowPost.aspx#7738641

Thanks am checking it out now. Yip, downloaded the latest version of TVersity this evening. For some strange reason my xbox and pc just cannot find each other on my router. The network map shows the xbox on my pc side, but I cannot connect to it, and connot get an ip from it to ping

There are certain Windows services that must be running for sharing to work, check out the link I posted above, it's full of suggestions. That's the best place to look right now.

Well I have checked through it all and nothing is working. I have hardcoded the ip et all on my xbox and its still not working (actually that is not even the ip I see on my xbox icon in the network map, I get a totally different ip).

Has anyone done this successfully on a marconi router with windows vista? Does not even have to be wmp11, tversity is also fine

works fine on XP, i remember i had to open a port and enable sharing on my computer with the 360, and you also need the latest netcode(?) not sure of exact name from MS.

I do think the problem lies with my router, somehow I am missing a setting on it.
I have checked the firewall, all required are open, I even completely disabled the firewall.
With vista there is no media centre connect, so can't use that, and if you use tversity, you should not enable media sharing through WMP11.

I have checked all that and still nothing, so I am pretty sure, somewhere on my router I am missing something that lets me see the xbox or vice versa. As said, when I click on "create netwrok map", it shows the xbox and my pc, as connecting to the switch, but that is how far it goes, I cannot find the xbox in my network neighbourhood or anything

Describe your setup, how do you have everything connected?

360 + PC both connected straight to the router?

Yip, currently I am using a normal marconi adsl router (the piece of shyte you get from telkom)

The pc is connected to it, the xbox is connected to it, as well as my wifes laptop. All 3 devices connect to the internet with their own pppoe settings on the respective devices, and they connect fine.

So I have both tversity and media centre on my vista ultimate. There is link activity on all devices.

I have tried various ways of just getting xbox to see my pc, or just to get my pc to see the xbox.

I have hardcoded a static ip on the xbox, something like ip : 10.0.0.5, subnet : 255.255.255.0 and gateway : 10.0.0.2 . But it still does not work.

When I click on the vista network sharing and caring centre, and you click on network map, I can actually see the xbox in the map, but when I float the mouse over it, the ip is something totally different, something like 41.286.XXX.XXX.

I have uninstalled comodo firewall, and have disabled the windows firewall completely, but still nothing.

I can start tversity and access it from http://localhost/<default port> , it works, but the xbox does not see my pc, and when I click on media sharing in WMP11 (I know this should be disabled for tversity, but I am testing all avenues), I cannot find my xbox in the list, it only shows my pc.

I have followed the instructions on the xbox forum, but I dont have a problem with DRM folder (its empty anyway)

I thought you said the PC can see the 360 just fine?

Have you tried turning DHCP on on your router and seeing if it works that way?

If you cannot see the 360 from WMP11, then there's definitely a problem. I'm at work but I'll reply with a suggestion as soon as I can.

Thanks for all the help man. Like I said, from the network map I can see the xbox and pc icon going into the switch, but thats where it stops, will try the DHCP when I get home (also sitting at work)

If all else fails, then I am just going to get a crossover and cut out the whole freakin router scenario

Final Fantasy XI online in south africa

For those wondering if FFXI online runs on an xbox in SA, the answer is a big fat YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! :D

provided that you have the following:

1. An xbox LIVE acc. (i'm running mine on a UK acc but I dont think the region really matters.Still, No LIVE access = no FFXI. period.)
2. Visa/Mastercard (its currently 12 euro p/m but you get a 30 day trial)

when you insert the FFXI disc you will first install playonline; this in turn will lead to the installation of FFXI. you must enter credit card details during the playonline installation/registration to continue. the rest is a matter of waiting for installs and updates (+/- 4 hours during initial installation/updating).

important things to note:
1. you do not need a gold LIVE acc. Silver does the trick.
2. the region entry during the playonline registration does not have to match the region selected in your xbox LIVE account. so use your billing address when entering that section of the registration for playonline.
3. playonline will prompt you to link ONE gamertag/profile to your playonline ID once registration is complete. while playonline DOES NOT compare or verify any details between your playonline profile and your gamertag, you can only link ONE profile and THIS IS NOT AMMEDABLE OR TRANSFERABLE.

I'll update this as i get more into it, but i hope it helps those wanting to get their feet wet in this amazing MMORPG
