Bite your tongue. I need it to go to R7 again for 3-4 months, so I can get some money out of this, err - for lack of a better word - , country.

This is going to spell crazy increases in basic food prices and inflation I am sure. Bad times ahead :(

Guess forex didn't like the speech the boss man just gave. :(

I hope it holds until wednesday, when I am buying a plane ticket. ;)

Hope it lholds up a little against the pound as need it for my earnings on my HSMP visa otherwise have to wait extra month !!!!!!!!!!!!eish

One man's loss is another man's win. I'm hoping for it to spiral way out of control - the sooner and quicker, the better. Wipes more off my debt.

R6.15 to the NZ dollar today, it was R5.15 just over a month ago.

This is actually great news for me, have some things I need to pay off in SA, like a SA credit card. which helped me and my family escape the sinking ship. :D:D:D

Same here MacNabs - I maxed every available form of credit to make the move. I was earning peanuts in the old country...

I read something about a 'perfect storm ' going on.......

hope it is perfect enough to drown all the speculators too...............

$ = R 7.76
£ = R 15.17
€ = R 11.25
Gold = $ 923.85
Oil = $ 91.91

Interesting to see how the markets open tomorrow morn.

€ = R 11.41
Gold = $ 925.90
Oil = $ 91.79

Few hours in and it's looking grim already.

A 320GB HDD that I wanted to buy was R800 10 days ago. Now it's R950 :(

Rand rallied a bit towards the end of the day, then fell again, only to remain back where it started. All eyes on the DOW overnight to see how it will open tomorrow...

Hopefully it will hold for 3 months while I sell the house.
Once I have the money, a weaker rand will suit fine as I pay off some CCs from abroad.

It's certainly having an effect on the food prices already. Crazy times.

My mom is visiting us from Cape Town - so we went shopping today.
The things I normally buy have sort of increased in price slowly - so I have the "smoothing effect" with them.
But some of the things my mom wanted - that we do not buy - shocked me.
The prices! I can see now, removed from that smoothing effect, how horrific it is.
A packet of biscuits - R12-R20 for local brands - and a small packet.
Cereal - omg.
And we have not even seen the effects yet of the weaker rand and power crisis issues.

Ya, I know. And it's not luxury items either, Like you said, biscuits and cereal prices are ridiculous. R30 for a box of cereal that will last maybe 4-5 days.

I was in SA three months ago after being away for 10 months. I was absolutely shocked at how much more expensive ordinary groceries have become. 30% roughly, based on my usual purchases. Would be interesting to see how things look in two weeks when I'm there again.

Well, it seems that way.
