They aren't and that is why they use the police and military to beat their citizens into submission.
Looking at the IQ map will explain why they have to use violence...

Any type of competence and intelligence went out the door when Ian left the building.

Their approach is the same as the Ian Smith one you are lauding above so, not sure why you describe one as competence and one as not. Okay, there's a difference, Smith didn't beat on his own people while ZANU beat on everyone equally.

Rhodesia got sectioned to the max and they still got called the Breadbasket of Africa.

The genocidal Mugabe regime only got hit by sanctions in 2003 after it became clear that he is not only a bigger racist than Ian Smith, but also extremely violent and very incompetent.

Ian Smith's rule was way better than Zanu-PF rule.
 
what worries me with the elections is the resultant flood of refugees southwards,
when a civil war/ coup/ instability starts up, the ANC cant cope right now,
who is to say they will cope when Zanu PF Collapses and Zim is carved up between dozens of warlords.
 
Take a country with a military coup, but claim to have democratic elections?
