They declined the request because of the impact it will have on the PC environment, bandwidth or the like. We have about 2 000 people in the building during office hours to give an idea of the scale of things using email services.

So I asked if they have a point or if they just don’t want to help me. Will my Skype call really have such an impact on the rest of the staff on the network?

2000 Workers? Im guessing that needs a 5/10G fibre connection, no way will your skype call cause issues.
 
Sadly IT only provisioned enough bandwidth for 1999 users. Tough luck there man! :D

Assuming this is not another melodramatic clone, Skype will have no impact on a corporate network that caters for 2000 people. Of course, the main thing to bear in mind is that most corporate networks will simply not allow Skype. Why would they?

Help me understand why Skype shouldn’t be allowed?

Guess we will have to use WebEx and GoTo meetings then.

Security, reliability, licencing agreements, corporate policy, inability to handle large volumes of traffic reliably etc.

But help me understand - what large corporations do you know of that use Skype?
 
We use Skype between statistics agencies. All of them are government departments in Australia, Netherlands, there were people from United Nations, World Bank, OECD.

But thanks for the info. We will move over to WebEx next time and avoid the hassle

If by Skype you mean Skype - not sure. But if you mean Skype as in Skype for Business - SBSA and FNB use it, or used to when I was contracting there. The Outlook integration is pretty handy in the latter

I'm no expert :) Just going on the OP and a quick Google. He/she did not say "Skype for Business". Which, if that was the case, what would be the problem?

Yup I am also just presuming, as I have seen SfB been used in bigger organisations before. Mostly clients with Exchange-based mail services. Tell that to an org using Lotus Notes and they will probably look back at you with a blank stare or two :D

That said, Lotus has SameTime which I actually prefer above Skype for Business and find it easier to use. But I am going off on a tangent here so let me rather stop assuming and wait for OP to chime in :)
 
No smartshopper discounts this week. All I get is "earn 2x points". Where's my discount on booze, dammit? :mad:
