Things to do when your cap runs out

Easy as pie :) - there is a basic manual on site i think

1. download psi, its a xmpp chat program
Yeah, thats where I'm stuck, I can't get to psi-im.com so is it possible to access it while I'm on local?
And can I use Pidgin to access Jabber as well?? That would be easier as I've got it on Ubuntu already...

Is it just me or should it be 'have people been' instead of "1) Downloading using local cap has exploded in the last few years, where have been people downloading?"

Yes, well spotted. It should be "where have people been downloading" :)

What if I told you that you could browse internationally using your E-mail?... No.. I'm not kidding... and no, there's no catch.

As long as you can access your E-mail locally...

send an e-mail to : [email protected]
and put what you'd have in your browser address bar in the subject...

you can also use it to search eg -

GOOGLE:"Free Webspace"

then when the results get mailed back to you, you click on a link... it e-mails you the site!... it's slower then browsing... but hey... it's free on local!.

try it and see!...

1. download psi, its a xmpp chat program
2. general-> accounts -> setup new .. jabber.co.za, put a tick in create a new one
It will ask/give you an option to -create- a new account on the set up page
3. after an account is made now set up transports..
General-> Service discovery
4. Browse a list, you will find transports for the various services offered on jabber.co.za
5. right click on service, join..
6. you have to enter you uname + pwd for service wanted
7. Allow/authorize

etc

NOTE: You are trusting a 3rd party with your username & pwd !!!

Uhm.. after thats done you can go back to using whatever client you liked that supports xmpp and connect to jabber.co.za which in turn makes the other connections to msn, icq, yahoo, irc, gtalk, etc
You will thus have one connection(to jabber.co.za) to login to all services..

NOTE: Gtalk transport seems to have a problem with logging chats to email. I usually log into jabber.co.za, load gtalk app while checking mail or other international stuff and set it to log chats and then kill international. And then chats in jabber.co.za via gtalk logs as per usual. I think i must email them and ask how to set it via the transport.

I use digsby as i like the skin i use and fact that it autohides as a side bar etc. Also allows facebook chat which i use when i connect international etc

Would you like to put something up on the website about this? I think it would be good if people knew how to IM and access mail with local cap. Just give me a PM if you are interested.

As far as I know... the problem with this is... that it e-mails you live HTML content which still has to load in your e-mail client. So if you are capped you still won't be able to see the live content. I don't think it archives the entire web page for you.

Will test this tonight and report back... but I remember trying it in the past and it did not work.

I'm using it on a local Account right now... everything seems to come through fine, all pictures - everything is IN the E-mail.

when you click on a link, another e-mail is sent... the contents is received a while later.

The only reason I picked it up is because I've been studying for exams and am in the 'zone' as far as English grammer is concerned ;)
At least they're finally over and I can finally go on vacation. And for these next few days, I can use as much internet as I want as it won't effect me when I'm gone :D
(Goes to dl TB of information)

aaah, that's great then! They must have upgraded it somehow since I last tried it. Good to know. Thanks!

Brand New Feature!

"Peek" is a new feature that allows users to view International Content through locallist.co.za.

It is a very simple concept, simply put Registered Users which are not capped submit international Content onto the website and then make it available to those that have been capped.

Hope to see some of you guys submit content soon!:D

Aaaah, great concept! I see what you mean.

Yes I will be willing to help with this!

That helps a lot, I was using some other software to access my msn, but how exactly do you use it?(It says something about migrating on the front page...)
And nice site Naus;) I'm assuming you put up all the links that are in your first post...

Thanks.

The Links on the site are user generated and checked by administration. New links are added daily. There is actually a lot of sites out there, so a lot of work on our end :)

We will be submitting a 'How to... ' guide to how to access MSN and Gmail and more soon. For now I suggest you read some of the other posts in this thread and also you might want to check out mXit, as you can use it to access your Gmailtalk. Jabber is also an option.

psi is like 11MB tho  so yah.. email account that can handle it or do you know a local ftp i can upload to?

btw.. You -should- be able to do it with anything that supports xmpp transports

I'll do a picture step-by-step thingy on it which will be useful this evening if thats not a problem, just tell me where to email it to and what format i.e. doc html etc :)

Uploading Psi to a local university shell account, will post link as soon as i am done :) [my old shell account that remains working is just so useful :)]

Is there any way you can set the site to revert to the home page when we click on the local list graphic at the top left? Or put a link to "home" somewhere at the top? Thanks
