Look I've never had an issue with bikers, I've never had to replace my mirrors and like I said earlier when I see them I move over.
Most of the time I even get a thumbs up, but the attidude of some trying to defend their apparant right gets to me.

Believe me i hear you. I would love to think im one of the good guys. But when people dont indicate and knock bikers over I get heated like you cannot believe as its happened to me, and then the driver laughs.
My anger is more towards pricks like that. All bikers do appreciate when cars move over, heck by the time i get to work my wrist is sore from all the thank yous i give to cars who make space.

I've seen them acting like real knobs on Beyers as well. They take off from the robot with the front wheel in the air all the time. I suppose it does add some comedic value, seeing a grown man on the verge of falling backwards.
I would actually love to have a bike for traffic but the things I've seen have prevented me from buying one.
The worst was when a guy was doing this very thing we are discussing and a taxi decided to flatten him against another car.
It was at hospital bend in capetown and they still had to stop traffic to land a helicopter to pick him up, I doubt he made it even though trafic was hardly moving.

Hospital Bend is one of the scariest places on the N2, and I normally commute from Strand to Camps Bay...

i have been a biker all my adult life. i drive a car from time to time, too.
it is true that there are many bikers out there with unacceptable attitudes towards cars. many of these bikers do not understand the concept of a safety margin. they also fail to understand that the relative speed of their bike to that of the cars around them means that the drivers of those cars are at a distinct handicap in terms of being able to spot an approaching motorcyclist in their mirrors.
when lane-splitting, it is a given that cars will frequently not notice the bike. often, this is despite a genuine attempt on the part of the driver to check their mirrors before changing lanes. as a biker, i understand this, and make allowance for it. should a car not notice me (for whatever reason) and change lanes in front of me, i chalk it up to the mechanics of lane-splitting.
a biker who does not slow down and approach with added caution a situation in backed-up traffic where a car has sufficient room in the lane adjacent to it into which it can move, is at fault. that is as simply as i can put it. often a car will move over into "my" space as i am riding. i have made allowance for this (my safety margin) and adjust my course accordingly. i am not upset - i understand that spotting a biker is a tricky thing. the driver, however, may perceive a situation such as this as being a near accident be startled or get a fright. (hopefully a small fright will teach a little bit of extra vigilance!)
for all those who have never driven on a bike in between two lanes of cars, i suggest you do this experiment (you may just be very surprised): park your car on the side of a quiet road and stay seated in the driver's seat. look out the front windshield. have a biker friend ride past you at lane-splitting distance at twenty km/h. then get out the car and stand across the street from the car and have your friend repeat the ride-by. from inside the car, a speed differential of only twenty km/h seems irresponsibly fast; however, from outside the car, you will see how safe and slow it really is. so, don't think that every bike that "zooms" by is a near-accident (although there really are bikers who ride WAY too fast to be safe in this situation).
additionally, there is NEVER good reason to knock off someone's mirror. not only is it barbaric, illegal, rude and childish; but it further aggravates the attitudes of car drivers towards bikers. as bikers, we fit into the world of cars, and i believe they should have preference on the roads. we can just sort of "fit in" around them.
and finally: thank you to all those considerate car drivers out there who make room for us in traffic. it is greatly appreciated. i find that where i live (cape town area), drivers are amazingly patient with us somewhat crazy two-wheelers. we in turn make your daily commute quicker by reducing the number of bumper-to-bumper cars on our roads. if you choose spitefully to move over so that i can't get through, i feel sorry for the state of your heart. it can't be easy to be happy, having an attitude like that.
(incidentally, there are many bikers who are just as inconsiderate towards other bikers as some of these purported car drivers. they drive exceptionally slowly in the lane gap, and steadfastly refuse to move over for the queue of bikers piled up behind them.)

Excellent post, droplet! I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've said. 
I agree, Droplet's post is great. In the end it all comes down to everybody respecting one another.
I wish I could say thank you to every car that moves over for me. Sometimes it simply isn't safe for me to take a hand off the handlebars to wave thanks. I at least try to flick my hand up on the bar to say thanks, but it's a hard gesture to spot.
I've never said that a car HAD to move over for us. All I said was that if the lane is a normal width lane, if a car keeps more to the left inside their lane, there's usually plenty of space for us to come by safely and legally. So, as Droplet has said - thank you to all the cars out there that do remember to check for us, that do remember to indicate before turning or changing lanes, and that do move over (even if it's just a smidgen) for us to come past. We really do appreciate it.

Is this true? Yes for some it is but I can guarantee that for every 1 truly horrible driver there is at least 4 or 5 drivers who drivers normally
The same is true for bikers yes you get the maniac doing 200+ in traffic but interesting enough there isn’t many of those around that have been doing it for a long time (they tend to Die or get badly injured) but they are the most visible group since they cause the biggest issues
Think bike is about Thinking car, Bus, bicycle and how you ride or drive.
It is there to make the road safer for everyone with a focus on bikes since bike fatalities is high.

i was glancing back over some of the previous pages and i noticed a remark about bikes in the emergency in traffic. presonally, i consider this a very bad idea and for a number of reasons.
firstly, there is only one direction of safe escape. should another vehicle, for whatever reason, move into the emergency lane in front of the bike, the biker is forced to make a correction on one side only. in nearly all situations, changing course in the direction of the road edge is a very poor option (curb stones, lack of road surface, pavement obstacles such as road signs). there are many gaps between cars, even in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and this makes the option of swerving into a lane occupied by traffic a relatively available one.
secondly, the road surface on the edges of the road (in the emergency lane) is usually littered with gravel, stones, broken glass and sometimes even worse. this makes for reduced grip and is heavy on tyres. very heavy - punctures are common among those who brave the road edge!
thirdly, riding in the emergency lane (whether the left emergency or the right) have a tendency to align the cars in the lane adjacent to them towards the centre of the road. this makes the gap smaller for those bikers who choose (and i believe rightly so) to ride in between the lanes.
fourthly, it creates more areas for drivers to have to observe closely. they already have a load in trying to spot us bikers as it is. when we all stick to one general area, it makes their task that much easier. this means that the drivers will get it spot on more often, and fewer incidents will take place.
fifthly, because there is a perception of more space, the temptation to ride that little bit faster is usually too much to resist. speed plus traffic equals lots of unhappiness before long.
