For a long time now i've been using my phone as a modem to connect to the internet and i'm not very happy with it anymore. The speeds are slow and it's very unreliable. I've been thinking about going adsl. whats the best offer i can get concerning an adsl line and and isp as im on a tight budget. thanks.

How tight is tight and what are your primary uses going to be?

Get a adsl line from telkom then use.
Prepaid for your bandwith from axxess, webafrica and if you want to try openweb go a head.
But yes what is your budget?

hmm, I think there are a couple of R200 odd options ....... Telkom, Webafrica, Axxess and others have bundle deals afaik.

Dobroadband 1, R199, 1gb + 10gb local. Line rental included.
The speeds are not great at that level, but it's perfectly usable. I would say 2Gig is better or he can always top up with an extra Gig for R70.

The sheer convenience of not having to worry about disconnects and buying extra bundles is well worth it.

I got Do1 since last year and got 1.5gigs Int and 10gig local....All for R200

Do2 > 2gig + 1 gig(on promotion) and 20gig local

You have no idea what you're missing! Before I moved from Dial-Up to ISDN I didnt really understand what the difference would be like until I tried it. It was like lightning, I was so impressed. Same sort of thing when DSL512k came out, and again for 4Mbit. Imagine the day when our connections will be transferring the equivalent of 1 of today's average-size hard drive in a second...

+1 on Do1 for R199. Its great for just browsing/mail etc. If you want to do big downloads you will need to get a lot more cap, but since your on a tight budget I'd go for this.

Also do a self install - I'm not sure if Telkom still give out the free modems though.

For years I used dialup and thought it was ok. One day I thought what the hell I'd sign up - never looked back since.

Trust me DSL is the way to go - you will wonder how you ever did without it!

All this talk about DSL has got me drooling.I'm so tired of this HSDPA crap.

Just remember the do1 option for R199 does not include the actual phone line rental. The "line rental" the mention there is the adsl activation of your telkom line. (pls excuse my noob way of saying this:D).

For the actual line rental, do not get the plain line rental, get the closer 1 option. It costs R135 pm, R11 more than just the plain service. Then you get some extras, but most of all will not get charged for the line installation of R460, or something like that. And for R11 more, the extras you get isn't too bad.

So all in all rock bottom cost will be R135 + R199 ---> R334 p/m

As for speed, I skype with video and it's working fine. Browsing and email is very nice too, for me anyway.
