Throttled CAPPED account?

Hi

I have Telkom Smart Broadband Wireless 100gb. For the last 3 weeks my speeds have been great. It varied between 55mbs during peak periods, up to +70 during off-peak periods. My 100gb ran out over the weekend and I purchased a 10gb top-up on Saturday.

Yesterday (Monday) I noticed a degradation in my download speed. I did a speed test and my download speed was +-4mbs. My ping was 35ms and my upload speed +-7mbs. I have since ran speed tests at various times of the day. 5am, 4pm, 7pm, 10pm, 11:30pm. During all those times it ran between 3.5 - 4 mbps. Never once spiking higher or improving over off-peak times.

I have less than 2gbs of data left on my 10gb top-up. I've phoned Telkom to log a fault, but the technician never contacted me and this morning their system was off... I was however told by the Telkom rep that my line can be throttled when I get very close to my data cap. Is this true? OR is there a problem with the tower?

I can't see it being congestion, since it happens all times of the day. My ping is also very good and the low line speed is just to "consistent". It never drops below 3.5 and never goes higher than 4 - does not even jump to 5.5 or 6.

I suppose I only have to wait until tomorrow to find out, but it will still be interesting to find out whether Telkom does throttle you speed when you have limited data left. Or maybe the top-up behaves differently from the normal 100gb data?

Edit:
My speed test is 4mbs (to various servers). My steam download speed is 500KBs (which ties in with my speed test results) BUT I'm able to play Youtube vids at 1080p 60fps, without any issues. Buffering is excellent and stream speed is 10 000 KBs - Telkom must be throttling me over certain ports! What else can it be?

New month. New data. Same old slow speed.

I don't get it. Everything slow: Steam downloads, browser downloads, torrents - 4mbps. Youtube screaming along at 1080p 60fps - 60-80mbps (10 000 KBps).

Is there no-one from Telkom with some advice/ideas? R999 a month and I'm getting ADSL speeds on everything except Youtube.

have you called Telkom? 10210

Yes 081180. Everyday since Monday.

First time they said their system was off, but someone would call in the morning (no-one called). Second time they said it was my low data, I had to wait until today. This afternoon they said they will notify their "back office" and I should get feedback within 72 hours. My local Telkom direct shop said that apparently the technician for my town needs to come from Pretoria/JHB (They don't have technicians who "specialize" in LTE...). So I'll be lucky if they start attending to it next week. I cancelled my ADSL last week - after "trialling" LTE for 3 weeks without any issue and now I have an issue.

I honestly think Telkom is trying to live up to their bad rep... 1 1/2 weeks and no-one has contacted me to discuss my problem! I'm paying a R1000 a month for "LTE" and I'm not even getting 3G speeds.

My first fault report was allocated to the wrong department. Telkom then generated a new fault report a couple of days later. Yesterday I was told that my fault had been "attended to" - apparently it means they have "resolved" my issue, but they need to contact me to confirm. Well, it has not been resolved and no-one has contacted me.

"Luckily" they confirmed I fall within the LTE coverage area. (No, sh#t! How else did I manage speeds of 50 - 70mbs for 3 weeks?!). It can't be congestion, because it's slow every minute of the day - unless of course a 1000 people in my area decided to get Telkom LTE on the same Monday and are all now busy torrenting the sh#t out of the network 24/7.

I even PMed Telkom. No reply. Any other Telkom reps frequenting this forum?

Now this is what I call EFFICIENCY (obvious sarcasm incoming):

After 2 1/2 weeks a technician came to my house. What did we do? Run a speedtest! Verdict? My LTE is slow! - mind blown.

Okay so it's obviously my tower, which means I will have to wait another 2/3/4/5 weeks for someone to come and fix the tower. I'm guessing 1/2 weeks to drive to the tower to see what is wrong and then another 1/2/3 weeks to drive back to the tower and replace whatever needs replacing.

I'm now heading into my 5th week of no LTE. Seriously Telkom, please sort this SH*T out!

I've noticed the following:

When connecting to Telkom LTE I'm assigned the following IP: 154.69.xxx.xxx. My friend (who stays in a different town) also has Telkom LTE and has the following ip:41.150.xxx.xxx. I'm pretty sure I use to have an IP that started with 41.xxx.xxx.xxx. Why do we have IPs that are so completely different, when both of us have Telkom LTE? Or is this normal?

So after 7 weeks my LTE speed has been fixed!

I would love to know what took so long. It couldn't have been that hard to solve. A technician came to my house on Thursday, went to the tower and over the weekend it was fixed...

I'll wager it goes south in a day or 2 again.

I know the feeling too well man.

Telkom said that they won't throttle gaming on their LTE services however I get throttled every night from 6pm no matter how much data I've used. I even get throttled on the first of the new month when I have not used 10gb!! They keep telling me that they throttle P2P including gaming P2P which is not supposed to happen. How can they throttle my speeds for P2P even if I have not used the allocated data? Telkom is useless at doing simple jobs which they put in place to cover their asses.

Put in place the correct protocols for gaming with LTE services.

Morning

This happens to me from time to time. On a 50+50 capped account.

Go figure this one out.

Then your Tower goes High wire on Saturday for an hour. I see this happening more and more.

Did you ask for a rebate, considering they did not fulfill their end of the contract.
