I currently have a data-only 8Gb 2Mbps deal with MWeb. I want to switch to uncapped, especially with the upcoming speed upgrades in mind, but judging by the uproar over the past few months, MWeb doesn't deserve to have my business.

I'm considering other options like Telkom uncapped. The only thing I'm worried about is the throttling from Telkom's side. I don't do a huge amount of downloading now simply because I have to make the cap last for the entire month. My old man runs a business from home and needs access to the net, if only for his email. Obviously an uncapped connection would allow me to download and browse more but I still won't be doing a huge amount (certainly less than 100Gb/month) of downloading.

So, is Telkom as bad as MWeb when it comes to throttling?

I cant speak for mweb, but I have been using Telkom uncapped for the last 4 months, I download around 250-280 gigs per month on a 2meg line, I don't know if that is regarded as abusive or not, but I cant say that I have experienced shaping, If they did shape me somewhere along the line I have not noticed it.

I think its really cheap compared to other packages I pay around R550 in total per month which is not bad, includes 2meg line rental, uncapped data, telephone rental and closer 2.

I would say try out telkom first as there have been a lot of complaints about mweb recently, Check out the ISP section in the forum.

Best of luck!

From what I've noticed, Telkom Internet is excellent these days

Telkom Internet uncapped doesn't as a general matter "throttle" they originally did during peak hours giving rise to MWEBs highly fraudulent "unthrottled" claim - which is the subject of the bad press, MWEB claimed that their uncapped accounts would never be throttled but clearly they had some sort of an eternal September usage demand fear and so started throttling people on an unstated volume of data downloaded. Your projection keep you ought of the threshold where MWEB start throttling but I implore you not to even consider giving them any business and in fact to consider categorically telling them as much. Telkom Internet is really a high quality ISP but I do believe that they can shape quite aggressively (although using a different approach to Afrihost) when necessary to keep things in play. Afrihost does the same thing. Both Telkom and Afrihost offer a genuinely uncapped offering but their home offerings are shaped but that shouldn't be a problem if your real interest is access to the net and real time services. There are many other options on the market but I really only have current Telkom (albeit capped) and Afrihost experience.

One problem with Afrihost's shaping system is that because of the way prioritization of traffic operates if you are making use of a shaped service on your line together with real time servers (so a torrent running in the background while browsing) you can see a degradation of real time services as well. Of course when Afrihost is fully effectively running you have an unshaped service and you can see amazing results.

I am currently on Mweb and I am switching to Telkom at month end. Mweb cannot be trusted to honour any deal they make. They move the goal-post and are actually offering a 2 and 4 mbps standard service which they consider only to be perfect for reading emails and browsing the net.
That alone it should tell you why not to sign with mweb. My monthly downloads never exceeded 100gb ever and on some months was below 40gb, They throttled me. And when you are throttled opening emails and normal Web browsing is near impossible. As your old man runs a business play safe and avoid Mweb

Also can vouch for Telkom, been with them for 6 months + now, great service!

I have been using Telkom 4Mbps Uncapped since launch and I think its the best uncapped account out there at the price.

There is 1 thing some people might find very disappointing and that is p2p speed. Telkom has been amazing on p2p since launch but I guess too many people forcing them to shape p2p more aggressively.... Yeah its heavily shaped and slowed.

That said I still think its the best uncapped account out there since the rest of the stuff is basically like unshaped. I mean you can really watch the whole freaking day youtube with loads of data and it will work. Speeds are freaking amazing on everything except p2p.

It has been discussed and said its better to do p2p in off peak times for best results... :-)

Great, thanks for all the help guys. I'll be going to a Telkom Store later to get more details.

And I'll downgrade to the MWeb R29 option before I cancel with them too.

Im sure Telkom ISP can get as much IPC as they want for cheap ;)

Telkom 2mb line and I get over 320gb in a normal month with no shaping at all.
I don't use torrents but have heard of bad p2p speeds.
Stick with nzb downloads and http.

Afternoon darste, our uncapped accounts are performing well.

send me a private message and we can discuss which product would suit you.

From the information provided, the 1MB product will be sufficient for your needs; if you stay within the limits you've mentioned

Go away Mweb Guy.
How can you even post in here with all the issue MWEB are having.
Can you offer the guy a 2mb uncapped account that he can do 320gb in a month?

NO!!!!

Electric, with all due respect we will not ask for your permission to respond to MWEB related queries. The customer indicated that they want to be able to do no more than 100Gig and we responded accordingly.

I never said you can't post.
I merely asked how you can post.
As in, how can you honestly still come into a thread like this knowing folks are onto mweb.
It's like the entire Bush administration.
No-one believed a single word he said in the end.

Let me guess, "You're going to smoke them out of their holes".

What I'm wondering is.....is it possible to get a Telkom DATA only account when you have your line with someone else? Spent hours on the phone with them trying to convey this, only to be told I HAD to move my line, which seems a bit draconian.
