Throttling: Telkom Uncapped vs MWeb Uncapped

Let me help you with your problem .....

GET AWAY FROM MWEB

FTFY ;)

You have a choice of ISPs - each with their own little niggles and inuendos - but where an ISP can throttle you for an UNDEFINED period on an UNDISCLOSED CAP ( their uncapped is just BS) ... you are on a hiding to nothing......

I've downloaded NZBs during the day on Telkom 4mbps uncapped and the speeds are better from 6pm-6am.

Anyone else experience this?

They will be because downloads are shaped when the network is busy to allow real time services such as browsing to run at full speed.

I'm testing Telkom 2Meg uncapped at the moment. Torrents are running at full speed.

Please remember - Trial accounts are like a girlfriend - they do everything sweetly, actual accounts are like the mother in law - slow and have all the imperfections you didnt expect :D:D

I know this from experience - and the ISP stuff too :D:D:D:D

It isn't a trial account. Telkom does month to month same as everyone else. Takes 15 minutes to join.

One thing I did notice is that you have to have more seeders to get the full speed compared to other ISP's. Maybe just a hunch.

Mweb is ***... I did 118 gigs on my 2mb/s line and I got throttled. I thought that my account would be unthrottled the following Month but it was not ... I waited till the 10th to get my full speed, that's after I sent an subscription cancellation.
I cant speak for mweb, but I have been using Telkom uncapped for the last 4 months, I download around 250-280 gigs per month on a 2meg line, I don't know if that is regarded as abusive or not, but I cant say that I have experienced shaping, If they did shape me somewhere along the line I have not noticed it.

I think its really cheap compared to other packages I pay around R550 in total per month which is not bad, includes 2meg line rental, uncapped data, telephone rental and closer 2.

I would say try out telkom first as there have been a lot of complaints about mweb recently, Check out the ISP section in the forum.

Best of luck!

I cancelled MWEB today and was just curious about Telkom's policies regarding throttling and how is streaming for Netflix, Hulu+ etc?

Any help is appreciated!

Daytime is bad for downloads and the offpeak starts very late. Gaming is shocking untill 11pm. Weekends are hit & miss with some Saturdays quite impossible to play.

Streaming is also unpredictable.

At least I have no issues playing over weekends on MWEB.

My son is playing Dota and other games day and night on a 2Mbps premium account from MWEB. If there would have been any issues - believe you me - I would have heard about it loud and clear....

Well you get free bandwidth between 00:00-06:00 with Telkom and starting September it will be from 00:00-07:00, with a 2Mb/s line you can pull 150GB a month in that timeslot if you schedule your downloads.

Try it and see for yourself on your 10GB package.

You can track your usage here.

My dad has that package and is very happy with it. Free D-Link WiFi router and a Telkom Mobile 3G modem with 200MB a month as well. I suspect it's just us Uncapped customers that experience the bulk of the problems. Past few months have been aggravating for us. In any event, Telkom have been good for the most part so I'm sure you'll be happy with a capped account.

Keep your line with Telkom. Never let an ISP have your line. Makes it more difficult when you want to change to a different ISP. It's not that much more to keep your line with Telkom.
