Thumbs-up G-Connect

I was shocked when they actually called and told me that I was connected to the net and that I would be disconnected for TEN MINUTES. only ten minutes, and they phoned me for it. Couldn't believe it! Then was even more dumbstruck, when 15 minutes later I got a call telling me that my service was back online again! Never had that happen before.

You only login once, they have session keep alive. Why do I feel like I'm repeating myself? Oh, it's because you guys keep repeating stuff from weeks ago without trying it yourself. Second hand info! Just try it, it's free sign up and you can top up with only R25, if you still don't like it - don't use it. The issue sounds a lot worse than it is.

I have a PC, 2 laptops, 2 Xboxes, a PSP and a cellphone that connect to my wireless network. If I restart my PC then the whole house's internet connection drops.

If I had a single PC it would not have been a problem

Finally!

SO nice to see a copmpany that has such excellent service!
Are you sure that they are South African? hehehe

I am going to check out their pricing right now....

Provided one of the devices is connected and actively using your connection it should not drop. If they not using the connection it shouldn't make a difference because as soon as your PC reconnects the connection will come back online.

I guess the only time this wouldn't apply is if you shut down your PC when you not using it.

OK. I did not know that. So the PC with the web console can be restarted and the rest of the house won't know about it.

Thanks.

hell's truth ....

I just finished the sign me up page.

I then logged on and snooped around "My account" next moment ... my phone rang.

Good evening Mr customer ... it's employee so and so from G-Connect welcome and ask if we can assist.

None the less i was gob-smacked ... i mean i have not even purchased any bandwidth yet ...

Well done !!! I can smell G-connect becoming ISP of the year if they continue with service like this ... :D

Same experience here. I just signed up and I got a phone call. Very impressive.

Problem came in when I tried to buy bandwidth and it came up with unexpected server error when I click submit...not sure if it took my credit card details. Never mind...second time lucky!

I'm using their service - with smoothwall.

The Session Window is a slight niggle - if they can drop that then they'll be a serious contender for Axxess.

Must say I'm impressed with their level of service as well.

Looks great so far.

Cheers!

Libs

Have just signed up - also using smoothwall. So far... I have been disconnected twice mid session to a couple of servers. Perhaps the issue is not theirs, but I am a little suspicious. I will continue and let you all know the outcome.

Yup I am using them too. Truly amazing service this.

I don't think any other ISP will cut it in terms of service ever again after this lot.

BTW: I really don't see the problem with the whole logon issue. It is not a big issue... seriously. Quit being lazy and press 1 button to access the interweb.

Ummmm

I did sign up as per my earlier post. I paid R500 (max amount they collect).
Missed the phone call as their operator did not press a button to continue! Maybe its a bot? anyway...

I tried to connect...no luck!
I called their support...they could not find the problem and said they would call me back in a few minutes. I waited a few hours and no response.
I called again...spoke to David...he changed my router settings away from bridge mode...can now access their log in page..but still cant connect!!
They will now ask their developers for help!

Oh well, back to Axxess I suppose..what the heck they are only R10 more per gig and hopefully they will reduce this soon...

AMAZING!

Braam the Customer Manager gave me a call! Very concerned that I had received bad service. He informed me that there was a problem on their IP backhaul and that he would call when it is fixed.
5 minutes later, he called again and it was resolved...

WOW...I am blown away!

Now to see what speeds I can get :p

I have to + 1 that. Despite teething problems, turnaround time is fantastic.

Here's a question for the rep:
When trying to sign up with you guys the questionaire asks for my ID and/or passport number. Since I'm not a citizen of the RSA I can't supply you with that, only have my german passport #. At Axxess they told me I can only go on using their service by buying vouchers from P'n'P or the gas station. Quite inconvenient, particularly when running out of bandwitch in the middle of night.
So I'm sticking to OpenWeb for now.
I hope I can sign with G-Connect using my german passport.

Second question:
Is your connection speed (particularly regarding latency/ping) somehow comparable to IS/SEACOM? I'm gaming so you'll understand I need a zippy connection.

Thank you

Hi there Herman my German friend

Your International Passport number is sufficient... :) Simply select Passport Number in the Identification Type dropdown and enter your number in the SA ID/Passport Number textbox.

With regards to connection speed, we have great pings locally and unshaped traffic internationally, hence the international latencies are great as well.

I hope you will try the service...

I just ordered mine and after phoning them inserted their username and password in my router. I have a Netgear DG834GT router that does not support half-bridge mode and I don't want to put it in pure bridge mode.

The connection manager was not able to pick up my ADSL connection although I was getting an IP on the router's user interface. When I tried to surf I got to the landing page to enter my username and password. I did that and could start browsing. The other PC's on my network could also access the web.

Now for the acid test and the reason why I bought this account is for my Xbox. The Xbox connected to Live but when I tested my NAT the best I could get is a moderate NAT which is useless for me. I restarted everything and tested it again but it stayed the same. I don't know if this is caused by the fact that this runs over Vodacom as I know a lot of people get this problem if they use their 3G accounts with Live. So this is useless for my Xbox.

So I ran a few speedtests and to the J'Burg server got this:

To New York:

To London:

The ping to NY is good but the international download speeds are the same or worse as shaped and much worse for local. (I tested each server three times)

All-in-all this product does not live up to my expectations and are useless for the purpose I bought it for.

Luckily it is only R25.00 that I wasted.

My advice is to give each user an unique username and password which they put in their router like all the other ISP's. If you do that and I can get an open NAT I will be your first customer.
