I'm trying out Thunderbird 3.1.4 and find it works well for my requirements, with one exception: I quite often need to 'flip' through previously received emails to check something. In mail clients like Outlook Express, Live Mail etc I just open the appropriate folder, double click the message header to open a message in full screen, then hit next, next, next to 'flip' through the mails until I find the one with the content that I'm looking for.

Thunderbird allows me to do this, but only with unread messages, not with previously read messages. Any way around this??

I have tested using Go -> Next Message or Go -> Previous Message and it works for me on read (or unread messages).

You can also use the hotkeys F or B for this (Forward / Backward).

Thunderbird certainly allows you to flip through all messages, read or unread, very easily in the preview pane. I don't see there are any advantages to be gained, other than a little bit of extra screen real estate, by running through them in full windows?

It also works when opening the message in a separate window, just tested it.

Yes, I eventually figured out the Go-> Next Message bit, the trouble is this entails a lot of mouse movement and clicking from one message to the next, so you have to move your reading focus from the actual messages, makes it very slow and clumsy when trying to go through a lot of messages. Most other mail clients have a 'Down' or 'Next' or similar button, then you can just rest your pointer there and click through the messages without losing focus.

I don't have a 'Next' button but using Go -> Next Message or Go -> Previous Message or the 'F' & 'B' shortcut keys work.

Yeah, you can add buttons to your toolbar, I added the 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons that are not visible on the default toolbar. They work fine, but only on unread messages. The whole ' Go -> Next Message ' process is too cumbersome

Do the hotkeys work for you?
