Time to ditch Windows phones?

It's the reason I ditched WP as well: app support. As much as I love the OS you just cannot live in a backwards world where the likes of SnapScan, banking apps etc. aren't available to me.

Will probably be changing with my next upgrade.

SnapScan does not have an app but Standard Bank MasterPass can be used for SnapScan. Only problem i have with it is that i have to enter the Verified by Visa OTP every time i use it which defeats the purpose of it. Don't have this issue with Zapper.

The lack of Google support killed it for me again.

Surely it has Wechat which should sort out the SnapScan problem now?

I ditched it quite a while ago so it might, but that's only one app. Not risking it :p
 
That's a pity... I don't use my app that often so I will probably manage but it's a huge disappointment
 
I'm stubbornly keeping my Lumia 630 for as long as it lasts. I love the UI, and don't do a whole lot more on the 'phone than instant messaging. Well.....if an improbably good deal on a 950 came along, there is a chance I take it, otherwise not keen on Android and Apple is out of the question.

MTN still has the 950
 
I'm still very happy with my 950 and will continue using it as long as it lasts.

However ... I've purchased an old Galaxy S5 as there are a few apps that I need that are not available on W10M. The only way I could live with Android is to make it more like Windows 10 ...

I'm still holding out for WOA, with phone functionality, and OEMs putting it on a phablet. Maybe some time in 2018...

Also, apps as we now know them will over time fall away, replaced by Progressive Web Apps, which both Google and Microsoft are driving as the future.

Yes, the phone-specific implementation today called "Windows 10 Mobile" is definitely dead. But that does not mean that Microsoft has no future on mobile. It most certainly does - a single unified and modularised OS that spans all platforms, from mobile to desktop, installing the appropriate elements on the appropriate hardware platform (the software side of Andromeda). WOA is proper "full Windows" for ARM CPUs, supports x86 apps as well as Windows Store apps, and of course Progressive Web Apps. I'm pinning my hopes on that.

Though the plan is actually very simple, and has been around for years, all this can be very confusing because the reporting is so poor.

My wife's 950XL will be on the market next month as her upgrade is due. She will be getting an android device.

I'll probably also go android in April next year to replace my 950XL unless there is a new Windows device coming which i do not see happening.

Hehe. That's half the fun. Hardly unique to Msft. Always lekker to see what's coming.

In the meantime the 950 XL is fine. Still a very serviceable device. Better cam than most. Wireless charging. Decent screen and 3GB memory. Good performance. Upgraded to latest Win10 1709. Works well. And I have all the apps I need.

Yes, sort-of. But Win10 is faster, slicker, butter-smooth. And I don't get coopted into the Googlereich.

I didn't know about the custom UIs.

My other objection is to paying any money over and above what I shall be for a Telkom FreeMe sim while I still have a smartphone that is adequate for my needs. Seems like a waste of money to me.
 
There's no live tile UI for android. Just live-tile look-a-likes that rely on widgets to update the fake tiles.. and if the widget doesn't support the app then the tile just doesn't work.

All that may be true for you. A feature shootout is pointless anyway, as many other factors come into play, all with different weightings for different people.

This is personal tech, and personally I find the Apple brand unattractive ... too brash, gauche, and IYF flamboi, though they make marvellous phones. As a brand it rubs me up the wrong way, and raises all my anti-brand hackles ... I won't wear clothing with even the tiniest visible label, brand or slogan; I tell car dealerships to remove their stickers from my cars; I generally dislike branded corporate clothing, even for my own company, so I really don't like in-your-face loud brands, and Apple is one. Etc, etc.

Neither do I have any technical beefs against Android, not even before it was acquired by Google. Today it's a mature and impressive mobile OS. Google devs have done an amazing job, and hats off to them.

... in the end, an increasingly important thing for me is resistance to the growing GoogleReich. Not just combing through all emails, contacts, browsing & search history, usage, locations, and so on, but also because they're morally confused.

What happens when Google disagrees with you?
