Time Travel

From my mathematical background, theory=fact. We are investigating conjectures, i.e. some statement which, altho holds true for most observable phenomena, has not been proven to be the case as yet.

Speculating is fun, but lets start off with the facts (general theory of relativity afaik, unfortunately i didnt do much quantum physics) and move from there, considering ideas and the implications of those ideas.

Since my quantum physics isnt up to scratch, is there any other (proven) theory we could use?

My question though is it possible too travel faster than light? Could it be the fastest speed anything could travel?

It must be a theory though, what travels faster than light?

Information? Einstein’s theory postulates that only matter is limited to a light speed maximum. Anything else can travel faster. To travel faster than light would require a method of specifying (exactly) anything in terms of information (computing power for that doesn’t exist yet) and reconstructing it at the destination from the transmitted information (specification / plan) from local materials.

They are theories, yeah. The only way it will be fact is when it actually happens.

Lol, ah that was my point mate. At the moment we are not even sure that our mathematical asumtions are correct...

Really we are moving forward and many theories come and go. Very few stick. Even mr Hawkings might be proven wrong on a coupe of things he was very sure about and he is one of the better maths-able people im sure :)

Anyway bending time and space is a very interesting concept but its all a bit above the average joe's head as to how exactly they get to some of the theories :D

Mr wolf's new book is out I see :D

Time travel doesn’t require a machine with flashing lights, spinning dials, and a warp engine—in fact, you were born with the power to navigate the timestream. Impossible? Not with the help of Dr. Quantum! The renowned “superhero of science” Fred Alan Wolf makes his triumphant return in Dr. Quantum Presents: Do–It–Yourself Time Travel. On this six–session audio journey down the wormhole of infinite possibility, Dr. Quantum provides you with the physics, insights, and practices you need to expand your power to journey through time and space.

Break Free from the Chains of Linear Time
“It may sound like science fiction,” says Fred Alan Wolf, “but time travel is really not as far fetched as you might think.” Learning the basics of time travel does not require training— rather, it calls for un–training from our habit of thinking of time in the “normal,” linear way. In a modern age filled with clocks and calendars, we have limited our natural abilities to choose how we traverse time in our lives. With a few simple practices in the “Ancient Art of Cheating Time,” Dr. Quantum helps you throw off the shackles of second–by–second clock time to help you vastly enhance the quality of each moment of your life.

But what about leaping into the future, hurtling back into the past, or peering into parallel realities? Fred Alan Wolf teaches you how to access these advanced powers of time travel through mastery of the “Five Fluctuations.” Once you become a timetraveling “tachyonaut,” you not only learn the skill of slipping the timestream, you also take profound spiritual steps toward achieving liberation from the ego, connecting to the universal consciousness, and overcoming the fear of death.

Sounds like a nobel prize worthy contribution to me.

Merc he is a bit fancyful for me but hay whatever rocks your cradle :)

It would be cool to just look into the past, without any kind of intervention. Like in that Tony Scott movie, Deja Vu.

Nope. He talks about quantum physics and experiments and theories etc on time travelling. That description is really trivializing his work.

Mmmm I saw what the bleep do we know. It was interesting but he was really leaning on some very "thin" theories. Like I said I am not saying he is wrong but what I am saying is that you believing he is 100% right is stupid.

But anyway while we are doing the theoretical stuff here is an piece I found interesting.

HIRO NAKAMURA in the TV show Heroes has the enviable knack of travelling through time and space. For the rest of us, it's not so easy - unless we can find a "naked" black hole. Such bodies could act not only as a "cosmic time machine", but might be responsible for the gamma-ray bursts often seen from Earth, which could be signs of time travellers coming back from the future.

This cosmic time-travel scheme using naked black holes was dreamed up in the 1970s by Fernando de Felice at the University of Padua in Italy. His idea, which he has now formalised mathematically, centres on the properties of singularities - the regions of extreme density created when stars collapse which lie at the heart of black holes. Such singularities are usually veiled by the black hole's event horizon - beyond which light cannot escape.

Small pdf dont worry :)

Okay, fair enough. I felt inclined to believe him, as he has a Ph.D and has published tons of books and courses already. I guess we will only really know once it happens, if it does.

That a boy, I knew I could bludgeon some sense into you :p:D

Some reading from Michio K.a.k.u -> http://tinyurl.com/km87fh

Then in 1963, Roy Kerr, a New Zealand mathematician, found a solution of Einstein’s equations for a rotating black hole, which had bizarre properties. The black hole would not collapse to a point (as previously thought) but into a spinning ring (of neutrons). The ring would be circulating so rapidly that centrifugal force would keep the ring from collapsing under gravity. The ring, in turn, acts like the Looking Glass of Alice. Anyone walking through the ring would not die, but could pass through the ring into an alternate universe. Since then, hundreds of other “wormhole” solutions have been found to Einstein’s equations. These wormholes connect not only two regions of space (hence the name) but also two regions of time as well. In principle, they can be used as time machines.

Basically what Mr. Wolf has been saying. Who knows? Maybe it works.

While I personally like the idea of time travel and alternate dimensions I actually don't believe that it is something that we develop in our lifetime, my simple reason for this is:

If we actually did achieve it I sure as well would have come back and had a stern word with myself about a couple of things.

If we actually did achieve it I sure as well would have come back and had a stern word with myself about a couple of things.

But then future self would have memories of being given a stern talking to, by self from future. Possibly negating having to go back in time to give said stern talking to, to past self. The paradoxes are insurmountable. Which is why I don't think it is possible, unless we're talking about alternate parallel time-lines.

yeah too many paradoxes - anyone can see that it's full of holes. not possible.

there are no parallel time lines or replica universes - they are only theories to counter the time travel paradoxes which are created.

The paradoxes do tend to make this very complex. Lets take going back and having a chat with yourself as an example:

You go through life, make some stupid decisions which you regret. Eventually time travel is developed, you go back and tell yourself not to make the stupid decisions.

Now things get sticky, because in essence there should be two versions of yourself:

First, the current version of you who went through life and made the stupid decisions which then went back in time. This version of yourself would have memories of making said decisions, but not necessarily of being spoken too thus the reason for going back in time.

Secondly, the version of you which was spoken too and has no recall of making the stupid decisions because it was spoken too so there is no reason to travel back into time.

This would thus entail the alternate parallel time-lines.

Now the next question would be, seeing as we exist on one time line, if we were to go back and speak to ourselves would the version going back suddenly gain these memories? I'm doubtful on this point.

Another question is, say time travel is developed and everyone is popping back into the past etc. Where do you return too when you decide to go back to your current time?

Is it the instant that you originally left to go back to the past? If this is the case, does time then just stand still for everyone else?

Or do you return to a point in the future again with the lapse in time equal to what you spent in the past? Wouldn't this entail actually traveling forward in time as you were not there to experience the actual passing? And then finally, why travel back in time if you can go forward?

Good question, never thought about that one.

There are guys who make a living out of trying to answer questions like that, so I wouldn't stress about it too much. ;)

Some pseudo-scientists call it dimension travel, to circumvent this conundrum...
