To all potential Felons

Bwana now you are just taking the p!ss...

If you only d/l one episode of 24 that has been on mnet and digitised dvd's you paid for then you are obviously not in the same boat as someone who d/l's 50 gig a month of movies and series that don't belong to them.

I agree with Macguyver in that it is strange that pirates band together and pat each other on the back... Maybe child molestation is a bit harsh but I see his point.

It's like a bunch of shoplifters going to the pub afterwards and bragging about how many movies and games they swiped from Musica.... It's not cool
Hey, it was an exaggerated example but a valid one none the less. I say if you're downloading 50gb of whatever for your own use then big deal - there is no reason to assume that anyone is actually losing out on anything. If you didnt download it why must it be assumed as fact that you would actually have paid for it?

If you subscribe to DSTV it is perfectly reasonable to assume that you are in fact paying for it down the road so all you're doing is a bit of time-shifting, a practice that DSTV actually encourages with their PRV. You can fast forward thorough all the ads at a press of a button so even the argument that DSTV might actually be losing out on ad revenue doesnt fly.

What I dont abide by is profiting from selling downloaded materials but thats my own personal objection.

I see this discussion is still going on :)

If you didnt download it why must it be assumed as fact that you would actually have paid for it?

Pretty much. By that reasoning because I haven't gone out and bought a Ferrari some poor Italian isn't able to feed his family this month. Bah.

And equating child molestation with pirating isn't even a close analogy. By the same logic:

Every time you go over the speed limit, accidentally litter or do anything even remotely illegal you're molesting a child. Hope you guys can live with that.
Wait no... that makes no sense. Know why? Because they're different.

If you really feel the need to compare piracy to something then it's like this:

Pirating is like making a copy of something that doesn't detract from the value of the copied object and may/may not deprive the original owner of a possible sale.

This is a useless thread. lol. Welcome to the current world! Its never gona stop, its only gona get worse! saffakanera, just remember when you see a coin or a few rand laying in the street and you pick it up, your also stealing!
Hell we all are felons! Welcome to earth!

Im sure Child Molester don't see themselves as wrong, child molestation was just an example. What im trying to say is that its odd that people in this country compliment each other for breaking the law, and abusing other people's intelectual property.

While a comparison of the two may not be quite on par, Mac is very right in his basic principle - People make light of breaking the law, making it seem justified and the norm by peer standards. Think about Wife beating, theft, buy stolen goods, taking drugs. People just accept it and joke about it like it's the way things should be, because everyone else does.

I guess it struck a chord having listened to some tool complain about how the 16 days of activism thing is useless because no-one gets arrested etc. But the first step in changing society is by getting society to admit that these things are wrong.

Like Piracy :p ;)

Out of interest - why is it that because the law says that something is illegal it is automatically wrong? Can you not think of any alternatives which might just benefit everyone?

wow guys, the powers that be should bundle this whole argument up and use it as a study thesis for any potential lawyer wannabe- we can name it Gavinmannion vs debbie the intergalactice vs Bwana vs the pitbull vs Ubberfunk against the people- 2006 hard copy edition.
i reckon downloading from whoever is seeding the content already costs a pretty penny, so ja the people who are seeding the goods are the real pirates right? my eye patch doesnt count right?:D

Very enlighting thread....but what happened to saffakanera?
