Ok now ... there is absolutely no way I am going to feel any sympathy until the big media companies reform - their current distribution methods are completly backwards and self centred

Under their model p2p sharing of a tv show would be legal - but it would be illegal to remove the adverts

In terms of music - artists make money off commercial use of their work and live performances - I mean I would much rather pay R100 to watch the RHCP live than to spend that on one of their cds ... the cds promote the artist

If you can AFFORD to buy a X360 be aware of the cost of games for it. How dumb can one be to buy a console and not afford the games?

Considering that 85% of the worlds planet can not afford their prices, I am not to sure on the sensibility of your argument. Using your argument, a hobo that smokes and drinks and who can not afford good medical services should be allowed to die? (yes I am aware there is a difference between games and health care... but just in their physical properties)

Only noobs buy console :P hehe

well it has SOMETHING to do with piracy, somewhere...

and apparently piracy also has to do with boats, and games are shipped using boats so yeah, piracy definately is relevant to the gaming section :D
 
I used to work in anti-counterfiting and I still believe that there is nothing wrong with pirating. In my view however, there is a big difference between buying pirated goods and downloading a movie or music for free off the electric internet.

Let me correct myself..its not that i do not see why there is noting wrong with it.....I know that in terms of the law it is wrong, and considering the law, it should be wrong, ie owners of intellectual property should be able to profit from their work...its just that I don't give an [email protected]e guys make more than enough money...like microsoft.....they only have bajillions in the bank account, and they are trying to cut down on counerfieiting so that they can increase their profits a little.....they say that pirating and the money they loose costs the country in jobs, etc etc....at the end of teh day we can debate the matter all we want, however, the story of pirates and IP owners is an old one that will NEVER stop....people will continue trying to get stuff for free and IP owners will keep trying to reap as much profit as possible from their IP by "managing" pirates.

At the end of the day, pirating provides jobs to policemen, lawyers, private investigators and companies factor the cost of combating counterfeiters into their bottom line and we as consumers ultimately pay these costs. I have seen counerfeit car parts, shoes, ROOMS full of Dvd's, sneakers, clothing, perfume, computer games, soap, cooldrink, razor blades, curry powder....etc...etc..etc..and have read of counterfiet cars (entire cars, in China ofcourse).

Anotehr point is that in SOuth africa we cant get many things and if we can the prices are inflated. I havent bought a CD in years and thats because I simply cannot get what I want. I do not listen to brittany spears, and I dont want the new Bump 334343472384 CD...I hav eno choice but to get want I want from another source. also, in re to TV, I am not going to wait three years for 24 season six to finally be broadcast my Mnet, I am going to beg, borrow and steal until I have the full season so I can watch it in one marathon session

Interesting story on digg - the makers of South Park have said they are in favour of their show being downloaded

Let me just say that this is the stupidest reason I have ever seen/heard/read of to justify stealing...

Luckily we have all these murders and rapists in this country otherwise all those nice policemen wouldn't have a job.

/If you didn't notice I am against piracy but am in no mood to get into it again.

If you can't afford it you don't deserve to have it, entertainment is not a right.
 
Yeah look, we've all done the piracy rhumba so many times now it's become second nature.

I do download TV Series. I could afford DSTV if I really wanted to but the shows are mainly crap and since Sci-fi left I can't be arsed. South park expressed interesting views on piracy in their episode about pretty much the same thing. Go watch it. :)

I have the same issue with regards to music availability and imports. Pricing is disgraceful here. Have you not tried the online shopping route? I still order collectors vinyls at half the price of your average L&L import CD.

I'm assuming by your choice in non-mainstream music you'd probably value having an original. If you find a trustworthy e-shop, its well worth buying again.
