To all potential Felons

man... this topic just wont die hey?

Blaming others for your own theft is so anal i wont even argue the thieves about it. Steal if it makes you happy to gloat about it and show it off.

Just remember what goes around comes around. ;)

copies are ILLEGAL.

Please dont mention any illegal activities on this site, Games, TV shows, Movies and Music, it all adds to an evil cycle that keep countries like ours in the dark!

So next time you think copying the next episode of Prison Break, please remember that its ILLEGAL! Wait till its on Dstv.

if you cant afford to watch DSTV, Buy the specific music CD, or buy the game, REMEMBER YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO OWN IT!

this message isnt aimed at any potential felons crossing this thread.
I know this isnt a serious post - but why wait?

How is a little time shifting going to hurt DSTV? It's still going to be on dstv multiple times, and with my DSTV pvr I'm still going to skip the ads. Either way they're still getting my monthly subscription and they should feel lucky for that.

I agree bwana, that's why I'm all for IPTV and stuff the "broadcasters". I don't want to watch 95% of the rubbish broadcast, so let me have what I want, when I want it and I'll gladly pay a premium for it.

The difference is what we determine to be theft - what you call theft I call fair use and the sharing of information

lol... i wish one day you decide to make a program or write a book and expect money for it... then people like yourself will rob you blind. :p

Well I'm a user and supporter of open source software (in fact I have no pirated software on my computer if it helps ...) and regarding a book ... well creative commons licences are handy for online distribution if it is something like that, otherwise for anything if people are like me then they should prefer to buy the physical book to read it properly ...

How arrogant to think that 'information' can be exclusively owned.

hehehe... you guys/gals amuse me... so software which costs thousands if not millions to make should be free for abuse and senseless distribution? how do you expect people to make a living?

in theory you would also advocate stealing cars since they are also kinda "exclusively owned"?

so just confirm if you are placing copyrighted software and open source software into one egg basket. Or are you willing to admit that copying legit software is wrong?

Hmmm..interesting thread. I'm in full support of original software but end of the day it's way too expensive here. I bought an original PSP game in Asia a few months ago for R250, got back to SA and it's selling for R500 at the shops. In this case, then everybody should feel free to copy them if the suppliers leave us with not much choice. Daylight robbery is fine to be practiced by the suppliers yet the author of this thread oversees this.

Imagine we could all pirate ADSL services...what you think would happen then?

You always have a choice....there is a simple theory here, if you cannot afford the software don't buy the system. Those are the prices here (rightly or wrongly), you can't justify saying 'because they steal from me I can steal from them'. Anyway, there are way to many piracy threads here anyway.

Thanks

This discussion just reminded me that I need to torrent the latest Prison Break episode...

Honestly, if I was gonna do it - some manic ranting and raving isn't really going to change my mind. Hell, its a free country, be as opinionated as you want but the honest truth is you're not going to change anyones mind once its set.

Most of my views on copyright reform are concentrated on media (tv shows and music...) - I would say that paying for software is fair if that is what the creator wants (however I feel that currently we are paying too much in which case pirating might be fair on a case to case basis)

But I do not think that the propriety software model is going to survive (it is becoming defunct) - the emergence of the OS model is just part of general copyright reform

"I am looking out of my window now. The sea is blue."

The above information is owned and copyrighted by me. Any attempts to describe the sea as 'blue', or any blue-like shade thereof, may result in prosecution and you may be liable to a fine.

...

Like I said, it's arrogant to think that information can be 'owned'.

//assumption is the martha of all....

Things, like ideas, have life cycles. Someone who ingeniously comes up with a new idea needs to be able to capitalize on that idea in whatever way they see fit, in order to incentivize smart people to deliver new idea's. That reward is not necessarily monetary, but will be for some. For others it may be academic kudo's or just a sense of accomplishment, or a sense of community and contribution.

For perveyors of proprietary software it's the former, OSS, typically the later.

However all idea's over time meld themselves into the collective conciousness of society. How to start a fire, make a wheel, that sort of thing. As more people understand and can implement that exclusive idea it's value dilutes.

Once again this plays out in the software market, funnily enough Microsoft understands it better than any. As MySQL catch's MSSQL feature set, or Open Office catches MS Office, they have to add new exclusive features to justify the value of their product over "common knowledge" products. That's why MS releases SQL Express, C# express et etc, they understand the value lies in the innovation not the product.

That's fundamentally where software copyright/patent and media copyright diverge and need to be thought of quite differently.

The problem with media copyrights is more the case of fair use and fair value. The Record companies are charging too much, it's just that simple. UMD is an excellent example, originally priced the same as DVD's they wouldn't sell, but when they were dropped to $8 they started to move.

As MySQL catch's MSSQL feature set, or Open Office catches MS Office

or Windows catches MacOS, or IE catches FireFox, or C# catches Java - to be fair M$ isn't always the first to introduce all these exciting features. They "borrowed" these just the same as everyone else... and that being said are probably bigger culprits than the rest.

Guys it's easy.

I can understand someone charging me for Oil. It's a resource that depletes.
Internet, PC gaming, Programs on TV & Software on the other hand cannot be depleted. Now why charge me for it ? Yes you need to make money for the time spent and gadgets used, but do you honestly have to retire @ 23 after making a Game that was sold globally. This is the problem. What happened to just the fact that yes your expenses are covered and you made a couple of thousands $’s (The fame of being all you can be). This would produce more competitive games and more of them. These whole get rich quick schemes are what fu.ked up PC gaming..... No argue about that for a few hours... I have More Vista Copies to make and give to my friends for free !!!!!!! :D

@Timgaul: Sure by all means, you're reinforcing my point.

MacOS is more expensive than Windows, because people see the value in it over XP. Microsoft could never dream of charging anyone for IE because a better free alternative is already available.

Think opera web browser - It was a paid for product for many years because it stood head and shoulder above FF and IE, but FF has now caught it, so they release it for free.

It's just standard free market economics - a car with "luxury" features commands a premium, until such time as the run of the mill cars offer the same features. In order to maintain "luxury" status, it has to keep adding new features.

@Pitbull: Have yo seen the state of the gaming industry at the moment? Almost everyone is running at a loss / losing money. The games aren't priced like that just to get rich quick, companies have a 3-6 month window to recoup $10-$20 million development costs.
