Taxis and buses are also the only ones who use the road for commercial gain. They should pay more than normal road users.
Where can one find the details as to what is needed to register a vehicle as a taxi? What if a number of private persons start a taxi association and complies with requirements for operating a taxi (such as printing the details of the association on the side of their cars)?
Think there was something on Top Gear once regarding the amount of supercars registered as taxis in London to avoid the congestion charge.

Yes, but aside from that, you can still drive on the route but without getting an e-tag - thereby making the system unworkable. You just signed away all of your rights by signing the e-tag contract. Good luck trying to prove that they were at fault by charging you incorrectly, or if your tag or car gets stolen. I also won't be surprised if your car is vandalised for having an e-tag.

A question for the legal eagles - if you rent a car to someone, is the onus on you to pay SANRAL if the car is driven on a toll road or the driver? I.e. Should SANRAL go after the driver or can they compel the owner of the vehicle to have to pay??
SANRAL likes the "user pays", so I'd assume the bill would have to go to the person renting the car right?
SANRAL likes the "selective user pay" principal. The guys who are making an income on the roads are the only ones who can apply for exemption. That is wrong on so many levels. They should be paying more than the rest of us.
IMO: The rental agency will add an e-tag to the car and will subtract it from your deposit (which will have increased).

I am just wondering why a rental company would consider tagging their vehicles unless they are ultimately liable.

This is not just about paying for their expenses, this is about greed.
And their greed is limitless, classless and anonymous.
They rejected the fuel levy route, cos they wouldn't control that cash flow.
They chose the e-tolling route cos it maximises cash flow into their corrupt pockets.
SANRAL have no way of identifying the driver of the vehicle, so the bill will be sent to the owner of the vehicle AKA the company. They will be ultimately responsible for the toll road fees, so good business practise will be for them to collect it from the drivers.

I get that, but how is the law around this? Is the vehicle owner compelled to do this or is it just accepted as a decent way to do things?
If all other avenues fail, then the vehicle owner is compelled to pay for it.
