To e-tag or not to e-tag?

Definitely not. If you support e-tolls you support corruption. It is on par with supporting Apartheid or not fighting against an unjust system.

sell-outs. The very fact that they state that the system is so disorganised is proof enough to stay far, far away.

Not much they can do, the discount outweighs getting taken to court as an "example" by SANRAL over unpaid tolls.

FU*K OFF SANRAL

If you are so afraid of that, then you can still pay on the last possible day (thereby creating an administrative nightmare for them). If you get tagged you are a traitor.

Except for the fact that the tolls are 6 times higher for un-tagged users. Administrative nightmare for them but more costly if you are going to pay eventually.

These car rental companies are afraid of taking the risk.

Anyone know where to get a rotating front number plate gizmo? :whistling: I'm assuming the gantries only take a photo from the front?

Nope. Front, back and side. 3 photos of every vehicle including an angle showing the driver.

Has nobody drawn up a map indicating alternative routes and posted it online. Should make good ammo for the cause if such a map would start to circulate, get a local paper to print it....

I decided to buy and e-tag for between Jhb and Bela-Bela, just makes it a little faster going through the toll gates...

Anyway, scanned through the fine print on the Bakwena (they maintain the roads between Jhb and Pietersburg I think) website and it basically seems like Bakwena have been contracted to collect money on behalf of Sanral but the money is strictly used by Bakwena...so no major surprises there. THEN I decided to check out the e-toll sites fine print out of interests sake and I see they mention that all Bakwena accounts will be migrated to e-toll accounts (Sanral) when the e-tolling begins.

This makes me wonder if the pricing on the Bela-Bela road will change with Sanral effectively taking over and also if all the Bakwena e-tag users will be advised of this 'migration' to a Sanral account...

So Guy Fawks mask it is then.

Is there a rule specifying that plates must be readable from a high angle?

Alt routes are universally crap & definitely can't carry 5 lane traffic. Originally we had laws/regulations saying there has to be an alt route for a toll route...but that either got removed, swept under a rug or bullshtted around...not sure which.

If everyone avoids the tolls then then JHB/PTA will become gridlocked the alternate road structure will fail. SANRAL will fail due to no or not enough collection of funds.

If you have to use the tolls just don't buy an e-tag.

Yes, you have two options, you can pay the 80% higher standard rates within 7 days or the 6 times higher alternative user rates. Personally I think those rates will still come under constitutional challenge as I believe they are discriminatory. But if you do that you will pay more in the short term with the demise of the system in the medium term. Or you will pay less now, and more in the medium term, and even more in the long term because like other tolling systems it will never ever go away once it has been accepted and the prices will just keep on increasing. Look at the N3TC debacle. The cost of the road has long since been recovered, but the prices are still escalating annually. The same with the Stormvoël / Zambezi offramps, they were only suppose to be there for a few years and they started out at R2.50 odd. Now they are still year and they are R8.50 today.

On which side is the camera showing the driver? I know which way I need to throw my middle finger :D

Allow me to be the first to call you a traitor. No friend or family member of mine will get tagged.

Dont buy etag....pay on last day, ask for proof that you went through, then ask for photo of driver and car...this after lodging a query to confirm that it was indeed you and your car..then pay.

Repeat for next trip.......

For the first time in history it seems that mr. Juju has his head in the right location, I'll pay the fine each time however ^.

Tinted windows. They aint seeing my mug :D

As far as I'm aware, it's illegal to tint beyond a certain darkness, and you aren't allowed to tint the windscreen window.

They will probably say pay first and query later.

Besides the cost and tagging etc. The thing that Pi$$es me off the most is the exemption of Taxis! They are the ones that damage and use the roads the most.. I will not be able to stay calm when a taxi shoots past me smiling, with a bumper sticker saying "Thank you for the Great Roads".
