So I am a tomato fiend.
I can blissfully stand in front of an open fridge door armed with a salt cellar eating a tomato.

But of late, I have noticed all the tomato's look perfectly ripe & succulent, but seldom bruised.
But worse is that they seem tough and tasteless !

Is this GM tomfoolery at work.

Tomatoes. Used to love tomatoes but can't eat them anymore. A de-acquired taste if there's such a thing.

How do you misspell tomatoes twice in one post differently? :wtf:

It's selective breeding, not genetic mutilation.

They cross-breed early bloomer varieties that turn red early on and pick them very, very unripe. The logic being that we buy with our eyes. You can blame the likes of woolworths and their stupid clientèle for this pandemic. They don't really ripen thereafter, but they look perfect...

Yeah, I am one of those people, Grantza. I love chomping a whole tomato with the salt shaker in my hand. Lately, like in the last couple of years, the experience isn't really the same, but then I just put that down to my nicotine-tainted taste buds.

Do I remember correctly that you posted somewhere that canned tomatoes are better than fresh ones bought at supermarkets?

Probably just mass production but may be GMO.
Best tomato you can eat is one you grow yourself.

I have compared as an example "English tomatoes" (which are not actually English tomatoes, I got some seeds from a friend in the UK, what SA refers to/sells as English tomatoes are just cash crop tomatoes) sold in the shop vs the seeds from those same tomatoes I grew in my yard and the taste, texture and all the rest is vastly different.

More water and thicker skins from shop tomatoes.
More flesh, less water and much thinner skins when you grow your own.

Personal favourite is straight off the plant and into my mouth, even better when they have been warming up in the sun before you eat them.

I read a good article a while back stating exactly this. Farmers have engineered tomatoes to last longer and be immune against certain diseases, but sacrificing the taste. So, some 'organic' tomato farmers are going back to the tasty tomatoes. And the interesting thing, it is in real high demand

I prefer the smoothie version of All Gold:D. Have never acquired a liking of the texture of a tomato.

Tomatoes are always in high demand.
If you take a look at what produce sells in SA the 3 highest sellers are potatoes, onions and tomatoes.
The longer durability is selective grafting allowing earlier picking which allows it to last longer through the distribution and sales channels.
