Tomatoes WTF ??

So I have a question. If you grew two decent tomato plants. How many good tomatoes would you get per week? Roughly of course.

Well the WW ones are the best I can find locally. Pretty sure they are GM but at least they aren't flippin green & bruised.

Yes, for sauces, stews etc...
Please elaborate/link.

If you take a look at what produce sells in SA the 3 highest sellers are potatoes, onions and tomatoes.
I call bullsht. Surely apples rank higher than those.

As far as I am aware South Africa doesn't allow GM foods, might've changed in the last five years my dad's been out of the industry though.

They do. Hell I had a pack of Ina Paarman {sp?} vegetable stock in my hand yesterday that specifically stated "contains GM food".

I remember tomatoes, that if you looked too hard at them they would split and fall apart. These things, you can play tennis with.
The old school tomatoes one could cut with a butter or fish knife.
The one's being served now up require a hacksaw or machete to gain access !

I'd love to grow the kind of tomatoes that you get in the Mediterranean which are less juicy than what we normally get but really firm, fresh, meaty and full of flavour. I've seen plum and beefsteak-like varieties. I don't think I've seen any like them anywhere else and they are fantastic in salad.

It's simple, grow them :D

Are they Italian vine tomatoes?

You have to ask that tool Lycanthrope :D It's him that posted those inflammatory pics!

I heard my name!

They're called "kvist tomater" in Swedish which obviously translates to "vine tomatoes." (Yay! I get to show off my Swedish! :p)

But where they're from, I'm not entirely sure. I know Sweden gets a lot of its agriculture from other countries (sometimes even so far as to import from Chile or Argentina). It's very likely that they're Italian but I can't say that with any certainty. My sun-dried tomatoes, however, most certainly are :)

But yeah, they're vine tomatoes and they smell and taste fantastic. The vine tomatoes also seem to last a lot longer with the vine still attached and, I guess, they still keep getting riper.

Best tomatoes I've ever had in my life and I've been buying the things religiously since I came across them.

I really like those oblong, deep red ones you find from time to time.

Yea the romas are quite nice :)

I usually have some of those, some cash crop and some cherry tomatoes (for salads and such) in my yard.

btw, nice place to get seeds online (I will be trying different varieties this year, as well as American Giant Pumpkins).

Tried them but they were out of stock on a few of the varieties that I wanted to try. You can also try Fairy Garden on BOB which had a nice selection as well.

Tomatoes from the store taste like water nowadays.I will be doing some outdoor this spring. All organic!I have been shoving all my grass clippings/dead leaves and branches into a corner of the yard to compost - there is now a sweet earthy smell coming from there.Time to dig up the beds and bury some of the new compost in!

I made a how to ages ago but basically just add some dolomite lime to the mix so it does not end up to acidic :)
