TomTom defends map data systems following Apple Maps glitches

Watch the video & then you will also have firsthand knowledge.

It's a bit lengthy, but well worth the time. ;)
See, I'm using an app right now, testing it against transit routes that I've taken and know well, that's firsthand... listening to someone's opinion, that's secondhand.

Anyhow, I'll see if I can find an audio version and give it a listen tomorrow.

You in America right now?

Speculation unfortunately - "Google believed to be waiting for Apple to approve its own Maps app"

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57517561-37/google-homes-in-on-maps-app-for-ios-6-report-says/

Surely Google would want to go public if they had submitted an app in order to put pressure on Apple?

Either way Apple tried to fix something that wasn't broken.

I'm sure their flock will be waiting to describe it as the best thing since sliced bread once the bugs are ironed out.

Those who are predicting that iPhone 5 sales will be higher than iPhone 4s sales to date will sooner than later start going back to the drawing board! Remind me later if I'm wrong.

iPhone 5 is selling by the truckload, there were still queues at some stores today (Sunday), I went to the opticians on Saturday afternoon at 3pm, there was a queue of over 100 outside the Apple Store in the centre.

I don't remember there being anywhere near the demand when the 4s launched.

Edit to add

The satnav part of the Apple maps app actually works very well. One of the best I've used.

The move to cut out Google, Apple’s mortal enemy, has now made Apple seem simply unprofessional. Apple has been slowly trying to make sure that Android becomes a thing of the past, like the late Steve Jobs vowed to do.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/technology/apple-ios-6-leaves-out-googles-maps.html?_r=0

On Wednesday, Apple released a software update for the iPhone that, among other changes, replaces the Google maps that have been on the phone since 2007 with Apple’s own maps.

The company has been preparing for this change for a while as Google, with its Android software for phones, has come to be more of a competitor than a partner. Over the last three years, Apple has acquired three mapping companies.

http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/09/20/apple’s-map-service-pales-in-comparison-to-google-maps/

Apple have come under heavy criticism today for replacing Google Maps in iOS 6 with their own in-house mapping application. From now on all iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch devices capable of running iOS 6 will ship with Apple’s native mapping service. Google Maps has been stripped out completely.

It’s understandable that Apple would want to replace Google Maps with its own service eventually, after all the two companies are competing for the same mobile marketshare, but exactly why Apple chose to replace Google Maps with such a poor alternative is a mystery.

Pretty common knowledge that Apple would be replacing Google Maps with their own map app from iOS6. Choice is not the Apple way, you take what they give you.

Whats not known is why Apple didn't license google maps again, did they not want to or did google not even offer it to them? As one of your pieces says "but exactly why Apple chose to replace Google Maps with such a poor alternative is a mystery." ;)

As far as choice goes an app search for navigation or maps yeilds thousands of choices.

Sounds good.

Can you perhaps list the first 100 results of your search?

I'm sure it will help a lot of forumites & we can compare it to Google Maps for a good laugh.

It has been and will always be about the money:

Pretty much like the choice between caviar and cat vomit.

Correct, now google can generate revenue with it like they've already begun to do with their ad supported youtube app. ;)

The Maps app was never caviar, even when it was google's.

LOL

But wait, bwana is gonna show us some of those "thousands of choices" search he has done and then we will be better informed.

Cannot wait!
