I have seen a lot of gamers who feel that there aren't good games to play on Linux. It might be that they love to play those pirated games, don't know why, when there are bounteous open source games available for free. The Linux games are hugely popular and that's not just because they are free, its also because a developer can take a great game and make it even better. There's an array of free open source games waiting to run on the Linux platform. So I got the top linux games in 2009. And here I come.

1. Alien Arena 2008
That's an ultimate crack! It's fully packed with 32 bit graphics, new particle engine and effects, light blooms, reflective water, high resolution textures and skins, hi-poly models, stain maps, and what not. Are you ready to take on as a fast paced deathmatch shooter?

2. Warzone 2100
Workout real-time strategies to rebuild the world after nuclear missile wreckage. Experience the power of over 400 different technologies that combines to generate a wide array of units and tactics,

3. Tremulous
It's one of the most popular open source games for FPS(first person shooting). Join the humans or the aliens, whichever team you must build the working structures. Take the opposition head-on with your sophisticated weapons and remember spawning the structures.

4. Nexuiz
Nexuiz is a fast paced 3d deathmatch game project that you can play online. With fast paced action and perfect weapon balancing it brings deathmatch to the basics. Choose any one out of the 15 different player models and bleed the stones.

5. Sauerbraten
For all you stingy and prolific gammer here's a mission game to hit upon. This is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter game. Enjoy the awesome rendering with its powerful Cube 2 engine.

6. RACER: The Real Deal
That's what you call typical car sim game. Feel the real heat on the hot tracks, racing with the life-like car. Get on with the just released Cg version Racer v0.6.5.4.

7. True Combat: Elite
If you are specialist FPS (first-person shooter) then I'm sure you can't resist this. Inspired by Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, its your chance to grab the real-world weapons - Beretta 92, Glock 19, Ump45, Mac-10, M4, Ak-47, and more.

8. Super Tux
For those SuperMario aficionados who still having a crush on its music can go with this classic side-scrolling adventure. Game it now or wait for arrival of Supertux 2, and hope that's even better.

9. Glest
Developed with an Advanced Engine Glest is sort of warzone 2100 game with medieval theme and close to the Starcraft on Windows. Glest has two warring factions, one with conventional warriors and medieval weapons, whereas the other comprises of morphed and summoned army.

10. Spring
This is an improved experience of Total Annihilation. Indulge in large scale fights, hundreds of unit and several diferent strategies and tactics. While on your mission explore the amazing full 3D with shadows, reflective water, reflective units, deformable terrain, 4 diferent camera styles and more.

Just had a look and most are available in the local repos for ubuntu so happy gaming ;)

Warzone 2100! That was a cool game back in the day! The trick was you could customise every unit's gun, wheels, etc. It had great 3d graphics too, for about 10 years ago ...

There are some good and fun games for Linux, but I think everyone will agree you can't compare it at all to the massive Windows catalogue at all..

Yeah no doubt, but these are free. Would be nice to see more commercial linux ports.

Commercial linux port?

I am currently beta testing Heroes of Newerth. It is a game. pretty much dota, with a windows, mac and linux port. Let me tell you, its some damn amazing work these guys have done for gaming on linux. The game works probably better than most games do on windows. I had literally 0 problems, just some amazing testing. The NDA unfortunately make it so that one can't publish anything about it or its content atm, but all I can say its making the future for linux gaming looking a whole lot better!

Yup, I'm testing HoN as well, Only thing is that nobody sells Linux games in shops here you have to buy online outside SA.

I'm thinking of buying HoN for Linux when it's released but for offline gaming mostly, it eats bandwidth.

I'll definitely have a look at the Total Annihilation clone...

This months PC Format has quite a lengthy article about Gaming on Linux. Just so that you know. Mostly aimed at those who aspire to install Linux.

Yeah HoN got me addicted to Linux gaming which is why I posted the article, I thought Linux games were a few years behind but HoN proved to me that Linux can game just as well as Windows.

OpenGL is not dead :)

The problem with gaming on Linux is not that games cant run on it. If written for linux games run very well on it.. its how Microsoft approaches someones like Blizzard and threatens to cut them out of DirectX API support and that kinda stuff if they write a game for linux.

I have it on good authority that Blizzard made a native linux WOW client, and that because of Microsoft, it got canned.

Blizzard has contributed to the OpenGL project so it is surprising that they have not got a Linux client when they have it running on OSX.

Interesting...

But I can't see why M$ would do that, and that that News didn't become public...
