This morning I just had it with TopTV.

I have started this thread because I have seen a number of people mentioning problems with their TopTV systems and I have been noticing more and more problems on my system since I had it activated on Saturday the 16th.

Okay, it’s only been three weeks since they began operating but it’s never too early to let them know the bugs their system has.

This is a thread aimed at helping you and TopTV sort out the problems with the system.

Here are a number of issues that I have seen on my system:
- EPG:
The red dot does not follow the highlighted row (this is a minor issue – I can live with this, but it is just a peeve)
It sometimes shows the wrong time
- Picture:
Freezes far too often for me (my wife cannot watch 7 de laan on TopTV – has to revert to DStv for a stable picture)
Sometimes picture blacks out completely. I could not watch Setanta on Sunday morning for instance and this morning there was music on all SABC channels and no picture. As I speak now, I wonder if it is now showing a picture again as I am not at home to check this. Other channels, however, were showing picture and sound perfectly
- TopOne:
When does the 24 hour programming begin? This morning (25/05/10) it was saying programming begins at 05h00 but at 05h30 there was still only a TopOne logo showing

These are some of the issues that I have seen on TopTV that are bugging me.

Since their call centers are busy right now I do not even want to attempt to call them.

Let all of us know what problems you are experiencing or whether or not you have the same problems.

Had a similar problem with the SABC's last evening. Simply unplugged the decoder and plugged it back in and all was well.

it is understanable that they will have issues they got to see and sort them out. just got to understand they are new to the market.

I get a black screen every now and again on the Fox channels. The decoder remote keeps screwing with my mvix media player as well.

This Morning I also experience the visual with SABC Channels, but once changed to ETV and Back, everything was all normal again, well wrt to 7de laan, my wife also struggles to watch Generations, also have to switch to Sentech (not MonoChoice) for no break up signal, cause Toptv signal breaks quite often on SABC Channels.

a) The Autotune reminder, does it have to pop up almost everytime you set a autotune, as to whether you accept or decline this programme, cause the reason is pooping up its becasue you are the one that set it up, and ten confirmatory story i dont understand.

B) I Love my TopTv :D, He who Loves also Rebukes, just to put them on the right path. as they say an Iron Sharpens an Irons, so a man We forumites Sharpens Toptv, and they they make our Houses, Homes.

Thx 4 advice...

Thank you for that piece of advice. I will unplug and plug when the frozen picture and music occurs on the SABC channels.

However, I have downloaded their complaints policy and will be following it to lodge a complaint requesting them to look into these matters as they seem common to all and ask them for a turnaround time on the rectification.

In case you would like to make a complaint to TopTV write them on [email protected], with all the details of the complaint including your customer details and decoder card number etcetera.

From complaints policy...
What will happen once a complaint is made?

• ODM/TopTV will acknowledge receipt of the complaint, either by email/sms/telephone to the complainant within 24 hours of receipt of such complaint,
• Complaint will be escalated to the relevant department to investigate,
• Complaint will be resolved within 1 week of receipt of the complaint,
• In event that the complaint cannot be resolved, ODM/TopTV will advise the complainant of the reasons for this and what further steps are available ,
• ODM/TopTV will keep a record of the complaint and submit it to ICASA in the form of a quarterly report.

One thing which irritates me is that the popup you get when you press OK always show topmovies1 and not the channel I'm on. So it makes changing channels a pain. And then I also get the times when the picture just blacks out. A final annoyance is something I notice especially with music where a couple of times a minute the the music all of a sudden goes false; just for a second. Anyway, I'll just lodge a formal complaint.

Although these aren't bugs, they're definitely things I think are worth complaining about:

1. The TopTV logo needs to be removed from the i-plate. (Or alternatively used as a picture-in-picture display of the channel you're currently highlighting.)
2. The font on the i-plate (EPG) needs to be increased in size so as to make it easier to read.
3. Season:Episode information needs to be added to the EPG or program info itself.
4. A reconfiguration of the remote buttons is required. Having to reach up to the top of the remote to press the "Info" button three times to exit the i-plate is annoying.
5. They need to implement the ability to set EITHER a "Reminder" or an "Auto-Tune". Currently, the default is to do both or you can set it do do either one or the other as a global setting, not individually per show.

My TopTV DECODER froze on the startup screen for 4 days now, its the second decoder i changed

and I thought there was a ghost in da house.....lol......thing switches on out of da blue and I blamed the kids hid da remote only to read this now........OMG!

Yip, the mute button on the TopTV remote switches my Telefunken DVD player on & off.

I agree with you... there is more...

The font on the EPG definitely needs to be increased. TopTV should remember that their 'so called' target market is the not so well to do of whom many cannot afford larger screen TV's i.e. 82 cm + Plasma or LCD TVs (myself included). Think about those who have 37cm screens. How do they see this font?

The layout of the buttons for me only works if I am wearing my spectacles in bright light. I find myself pressing the wrong buttons when I try using the remote while in bed and the lights are off. I think a more ergonomic layout is needed, one with key buttons in brighter colors (yellow, luminous like orange, lime or pink) for key operational features such as exit/back, on/off and channel & volume up/down.

And yes, more information is needed for series labeling in the information window (what episode is it of what number series and a synopsis of the episode).

Off course this is taken from my experience with DStv but is this not the standard approach with satellite TV worldwide?

Also, the picture in picture screen size could be enlarged a little - remember those 37cm TV guys?

You would think they tested all these issues before roll-out. These seem to be pretty glaring problems. I'll stick to DStv in the meantime, at least their info shows the season and episode number.

Gotta love the SA public, complain complain complain.Give it time, Rome wasnt built in a day.Woner what would happen if they decide to pull the plug cause its not worth the effort, how would you like that.

People complain because it's their right to complain - there are some complaints that are petty but if you take a look at some of the topics on the forum you'll see their complaints are completely justified. "Rome wasnt built in a day" doesn't cut it when a business launches a service that, after a month, still has huge problems. I'm all for TopTV and have been behind them since the announcement of a second operator in SA but it's time they pull up their socks.

I absolutely agree, except your point number one, with picture in picture, wouldn't that require a 2nd tuner for this operation?

You're absolutely right. I didn't consider that. Perhaps it's there for that purpose once they bring out a newer DView decoder later on.
If that's the case, they should remove it from the software for the current hardware.
