Well i haven't seen a fresh movie on ActionX for 3 months. Only movie channel on Select 2 so it cant be much worse than i have now.
 
Silver

Based on an earlier comment that the SILVER channel is crap (or some such) I guess we are definitely talking horses for courses.

You can browse the website of Silver (http://www.nonstop.tv/silver/index.asp?tab=1) and you will find what are often referred to as World movies. Mostly it seems to be foreign language and art-house movies.

Until ODM crack the sport issue (force DTSV to licence some sport channels) they will struggle in this market.

However, if they revisit the packaging (already) there maybe a solution.

Just as I don't need the 'general' channels on DSTV I am not bowled over by the 'variety' bouquet of Top TV either. Solution: take a look at SKY TV''s website and see how they are handling it (unbundling) and envy the choice for the money!

I would be interested in subscribing just to Silver in addition to DSTV COMPACT but no option exists. I can only waive goodbye to DSTV once ODM gets their hands on the English premiership. Multichoice knows this and will need to be dragged to court to really open up to competition.
 
If I haven't mentioned it I studied film for 5 years. I know good art house film and I know junk. Silver is 90% junk. People seem to think by virtue of screening at nouveau or on dedicated channels these movies must be better. Most of it is technically 'independent cinema' which just means no one else wanted to make it. Every one in ten of those movies is decent (about 1 in a 100 is actually good) most of them really never should have been made. Most of those better movies do find their way to the sabc and e.tv but they screen at peculiar times (again looking at the silver schedule the sabc and e.tv might have aired many of those movies already). That said it can't be worse than leon schuster or transformers 2 and the like I guess. And I would probably like Silver too (compared to other movie channels) but there's not much else for R220 or R250 a month to make 10% of one channel worthwhile.

Um, well I might agree with you (Oronte) but I need to 'see for myself'. My albeit quick rummage through the Silver May schedule, threw up a number of films I would like to see.

Silver reminds me of Film 4, an offshoot satellite channel of UK terrestrial broadcaster - Channel 4, which showed, but also commissioned, independent films. You may well be right that some should never have been made, but let's allow the platform and then people can make their own minds up.

If the economics can be made to work, I would add Top TV as a supplement and if I can cherry pick. If Top TV stick with the DSTV model, it won't work out for us.
 
I don't have dstv and I really want Top TV to be good but looking at the schedules I think it is wiser to wait for the platform to mature until then I'll continue buying my series dvds.
 
In all honesty, as much as I'm excited about TopTV (my installation is booked for Monday afternoon), I think it's a perfect example of just how much we've been screwed by Multichoice in the past.

When an entire nation is excited about what is, in reality, nothing more than a meager and below-average digital satellite offering, it's abundantly clear that something is very wrong with the existing service provider.

Despite the fact that TopTV in no way compares with the bouquet offerings of DSTV (except for price, of course), they're still pulling an incredibly large portion of the viewership, purely because people are simply fed up with the constant price-hikes and overall lack of service.
Speaking to a Multichoice employee earlier today, it was made clear that they are getting an influx of people downgrading from the Premium to the Compact package.
Sure, they lose the sport and M-Net (along with a few other channels as well) but it seems this is a compromise people are willing to make in order to give the competitor a chance to provide a better service.
 
are TopTv trying to compete with Dstv or are they trying to get into the market that Dstv did not grab?
 
For now, their target market is obviously the lower-income consumer but then, this is their entry-level service.

As time goes on and they gain enough of the market share, they'll be able to afford to directly compete.

Regardless of whether or not they're 'trying' to compete with Multichoice doesn't take away from the fact that they ARE taking a fair amount of money from them. Like I said, the woman from Multichoice said they'd been downgrading accounts all day, which definitely says something.

I agree. No competition was established so we think this new offering will be inferior to what we've always known. So maybe just maybe Toptv impresses the masses.

I know architects who studied for 5 years, but cant design a house.


so just cause you studied it, doesn't mean you any good at it by default........
