TopTV - Whats on?

At least <oronte> was willing to offer an opinion on the topic... don't see any from some posters that have derided him.

 I can honestly say there is not one thing there that I want to watch ...... what a sad-act line up of stuff. And the fanbois can Rar-Rar-Rar about it all day long, fact is, at this moment in time, that's is one highly ****ty line up.

I was thinking of the shows they advertised and how we all know the movies and seen them over and over again and feel that is a waste of money maybe but what about those of us who have never seen these movies or series for them it is a new form of entertainment instead of the stuff they have had to watch or listen too.

Aye, if the only thing you've had is SABC and Etv, I suppose this is pretty cool .....

+1
I wish i could get amnesia from my premium subscription, and those shows would look alot better.
Still, i went to house and home out of interest and the salesman told me that the 14 units they got in were sold out instantly.
They have a list of 300 customers on back order for the decoders.
If ODM keep this up then it wont be long before ODM overtake Multichoice's meager 1.6 million subscribers.

thats funny

I know architects who studied for 5 years, but cant design a house.

so just cause you studied it, doesn't mean you any good at it by default........

On one point you are correct and it was silly of me to point it out, you can study for many years and learn nothing. I am certain education was entirely wasted on you for example (I apologise for that remark but perhaps you might think before mocking others?). I didn't claim I could (or would want to make a film, as per your analogue of a house) my discussion goes to film cricitism. The point I was trying to make was that many people assume 'art house' cinema must be better than ordinary cinema and this is often not the case and general academic study of film would support such a conclusion.
In a sense you are right to mock me it was condescending of me to point out my qualifications as justification for my opinion being somehow more correct than another's. So thank you for that (however there are other ways to make such a point rather than offending someone). So for my condescending behaviour apologies go to Cost Conscious for attempting to diminish his/her very valid point of view (in my rush to defend my own point of view I clearly erred). Perhaps just as importantly I forgot that those foreign language films and low budget productions while rarely of high quality, do provide an alternative voice to Hollywood and at the very least do offer educational/cultural value which is probably the argument Cost Conscious was trying to make (and something I do agree with, so perhaps my initial assessment of Silver was unfair).
And thank you to Moggie for coming to my defence.
Let the equal praise and beratement of Top TV continue and let us put this diversion behind us.

While I think it's big of you to admit that your initial post was somewhat condescending, I just want to point out that jdboubert was in no way offensive or mocking in his tone. He was simply pointing out the obvious fact that using your qualifications as a justification for your opinion means nothing. (Which, you've admitted to anyway.)

Also, I think you mean "analogy" and not "analogue". :P

And to throw my 2c in to the actual discussion, although some people may find 90% of the content to be complete rubbish, you have to concede that there are a handful of people who will absolutely love that 90% and hate the 10% that you think is good.
Movies, whether backed by a large production house or independent, CAN be categorized as good or bad based on mainstream opinions (just like there's a mainstream opinion on what is considered ugly or pretty) but that doesn't mean that it's completely black and white, which is what your original post alluded to.

Series
--------
Stargate SG-1 S1
Las Vegas S1
Alias S3
Magnum PI S1
Six Million Dollar Man S1

:wtf:

Movies (I think they borrowed the tapes from SABC and e-tv)
--------
Titanic
Universal Soldier
Anaconda 1 & 2
Terminator 1 & 2

True lies
The Net
Speed
Speed 2: Cruise Control

Police Academy 1 - fk knows
Robocop 1,2 and 3

Those movies are exactly the same stuff dstv has been repeating for the last who knows how long. These are the opening movies toptv intends to wow their new customers with? Think I'll stick to monochoice for the time being!

Not to be drawn too far off topic - I personally don't have a problem if man tells me that I should take some drugs (and then tells me that he is a doctor). :D

I like my fair share of Hollywood but I also like the occasional independent film and I am grateful someone decided to fund and make it. Mainstream channels are not enthused about transmitting these films, I presume because they they know their audiences tastes so well? :erm:

So back to the SILVER channel - it fills a need for some people and shows material that you are unlikely to see anywhere else. And for those complaining about repeats; well there are probably a lot of entertaining films on SILVER you might enjoy! ;)

Oronte correctly points out that sometimes these art-house/independent movies DO make it to channels like SABC3 or eTV, however they go out in the early hours, and are a rare sighting. Thank goodness for PVR's, VCRs etc! :)

But... but TopTV have themselves said they aren't targeting DSTV's market... they are trying to sign up the unsigned up. That's those people who are at the mercy of the state broadcaster & ETV. Those people have been watching movies with names, "Dollar For The Dead" for years on SABC & having their Survivor winners announced before the voting is complete.

I just thought I'd make a comment about the nouveau discussion.

In all honesty: most films that show at nouveau cinemas here are better then most films that show in normal cinemas.
Seriously.. we're bombarded with the likes of Transformers 2. Sure, people loved the film, but it was such a pointless movie for many (including myself).

I'm not going to say that one is better then the other. My older brother and his girlfriend spend most of their time watching nouveau films over normal cinema because that is their preference. I myself watch a constant stream of both... I go to film festivals because I just generally love cinema in its entirety.

But seriously... did you just call foreign films, and other nouveau offerings, to be of a general low quality? Wow... just wow.

Fair enough

Are dstv and toptv at some low level in cahoots with each other? By way of your explanation above it seems to me the existing 'crap entertainment' from monochoice has just been repackaged with new branding and flogged off to the masses who can't afford the same content dstv is already airing. What's the point of bringing in a new 'service' if it's the same old crap we've already seen umpteen times? :D

As far as I'm concerned there is nothing new to see here. The TV industry is dying a slow death thanks to the wonder of teh intarwebz. Yayzors!

What is showing on the Discovery Channels???

My only interest is in the Music and Documentary Channels.

Another thought came to me about channels like SILVER; I think its also true that these sort of channels also have some interest in outstanding or critically acclaimed drama's.

So besides providing the opportunity to view less mainstream material, there is usually also a good dose of mainstream films that have won awards or attracted positive comment/plaudits. The are the sort of films you don't mind watching again, especially when tripping over them during a channel surf.

R13 made me laugh with:

Got my TopTv box, registered, but now there is not a single installer in the Western Cape that can help me with the instalation. They are all out of stock with the dishes. Aparently they are strugeling to get hold of TopTv to find out when they wil get stock again. I whould think that they whould have at least one dish per decoder in that region. Now I have the decoder, but no dish. Not very nice! Waiting for the installer to contact me.....

Have you tried Sats-R-Us in Blouberg? 086 123 3788 or 021 554 4641.

Firstly analogue is still right, look it up in a dictionary (analogy is more appropriate though).
Cruizd: My point of nouveau films being of low quality stands. Most of them are independent cinema not art house (there can be a difference). Often production values are poor, bad lighting, bad audio, often actors are awful, the majority of the time scripts are incomplete (and are really at the draft stage but got made anyway rather being redrafted). It's the most common fault with independent film - rough drafts which directors then try to do something crazy with (like play with editing or use odd locations, etc) to give the appearance of 'art house' cinema. Again this is my opinion from analysing 100's of movies and being a regular at cinema nouveau. One thing I might add is that while I am critical of noveau I am far harder on commercial cinema. If 90% of nouveau is junk, 98% of commercial cinema is nonsense (and I just figured out why people got angry at my Nouveau comments no one knows my relative rating system, sorry)!

It will be a year before TopTV starts broadcasting decent qualitity programming. But you got to laugh at early adopters.....

If not for the early adopters (btw I'm not one of them ;) ) you wouldn't have the option of getting TopTV in a year.
