I used to be a big DC++ user. I have been away 2 months and now that I am back - I am getting absolutly horrendous performance. I am talking locally - no more than 10k. Usually around 2-3k. And for international 1 - 2k. Is there a new port prioritisation model they are using? It certainly isn't the users because some of the users I tried had all slots free - and I did try quite a few

As always my client is set as active with either random or static 412/1412 ports.

I decided to try a few torrents and using the Azareus client I am getting 20k per second international. (I did a netstat)

My http speed is 50k international

Has anybody else seen this sort of thing?

its not just with torrents, im getting really crappy speeds with any p2p that i try. http downloads are fine though. some major port shaping taking place, and i think p2p just sank to about the lowest priority :(

I was on the local hub the last couple of months - can't think what else the problem could be though. Maybe Telkom has a naughty users list that they stick everybody on that consistantly does over 100Gigs in a month :D

But I do find it odd - and irritating. I can Upload @ 50K but D/L is terrible - Is everybody Limiting. Obviously if it stays like that I won't be connecting.

Yeah - The Metro Police Just Came round to bust a bunch of ehem - "people" in the road with big subs. They can & do confiscate them here in Durban.

No problems here with bittorrent, got three going with a combined average of 25k down, 20k up.

dc++ I gave up on eventually - there's just far too many rules for my liking, eventually got tired of all the BS that it throws at you when I was informed by a few servers that I didn't have permission to search, that was the final straw. Prior to that, I had a server kick me because I connected to another three servers, I mean, WTF ?

It's like the whole system is a bunch of little fiefdoms with their own arcane set of rules, presided over by egomaniacs.
As for Zahub, whoever rules the roost there are a bunch of total w@nkers.

I think I prefer the socialism offered by torrents :D

Hehe Fifedoms - I like that one & agree 100%.

eg
"No Advertising for other hubs, No asking for or about other hubs.....The list goes on"

The reason I wanted to get it running is there is a bunch of guys who rip music to a very high standard (Always full albums)- so you don't get any of the typical badly ripped, poorly encoded and incorrectly named music.

They only run on DC++ :(.

So looks like no more rare and amazing music that you will not find in SA or likely alot of places in the world. Damn the library was at about 40Tb the last time I looked :eek:

Check out the standard @ http://www.ubernet.org

PS Any advice on torrents? where whatsbest etc?

Well yeah, I have heard that dc++ is really for your more obscure stuff. It depends how obscure I guess. I'm sure that if there's anything I'm really seeking that I can't find on torrents, I'll try other means before resorting to the horrors of dc++

Hell, I'd rather order stuff that face trying to find anything on dc++, let alone download it.

Torrent sites are getting more varied, although it still is very much a "spur of the moment" protocol where downloads are as long lived as their activity - as soon as the last seed dies, the file is gone.

DC++ gives you faster speeds and greater selection of stuff. BT gives you greater reliability.

If you had trouble with the hubs it was likely because you were doing things that hurt or devalue the network, if you found you were dealing with egomaniacs you were likely on the wrong hub, they are not all like this.

The various rules can be complicated and frustrating, but DC++ is as much about the community as the content - most people tend to stick to one hub where like minded people are, so trying to memorize rules is not an issue most of the time.

If you get told you can’t search, it means you are in chat mode, which means you did not meet one of the hub requirements usually.

Thanks pookfuzz. I'll bear that in mind, although I really don't have the patience for it right now. I'm not really interested in getting involved in yet another online "community" - I'm already spread too thin online as it is. I just want to get my quick fix of whatever takes my fancy at any given moment. Currently it's a certain TV series which I had zip luck with on dc++, but am having a rip-roaring time with on torrents.

Nooooooooo - what - Pay for stuff!!!. I already pay for ADSL - thats enough :D.

What series - I am in mourning over my dead drive. Had all stargate on it plus a bunch of other stuff. All high quality +- 300Mb

I can't even find words to describe how much I agree with you here.

<RANT>
They all think they're super special because they can make idiotic rules in their tiny electronic dork villiages. Idiots, every last one of them, every bit as bad as the egotistic ops on IRC that think they're gods or something.

Get over it you sh1tnozzles, we come there to download stuff, not to grovel at your tiny feet. Just because you're finally 13 now and your mom bought you some new Mickey Mouse slippers to go with your Little Mermaid pajamas doesn't mean you're somehow better than the rest of us. Your life is still futile, your **** still stinks and you live on the same deity forsaken rock as the rest of us.
</RANT>

I feel tonnes lighter :D

You sure it as Zahub and not another with a similar name?

If it really was ZaHub/Xymox/Za that you had trouble on then the chances are you were being an idiot. :)

I probably need to agree with Pook on that one. I was chucked out - you gotta follow the rules - Most of which are not bad.

There were a couple I didn't agree with - however these never effected me.

Never got into trouble. Just don't care to be subjected to the stupid rules, regulations and idiots that run SA hubs. ZAhub is probably the lamest hub for me personally. The South African hub is slightly better, but like BB_Matt I prefer torrents. Really couldn't be bothered with DC.

Oh well, DC is not for everyone I guess, and I would have to agree that torrents are much easier if you can find what you want.

You guys have hijacked my thread - This is your first warning - persist and you will be kicked - or kick banned or ban kicked or all three.

Back to the original topic - why is DC++ so slow (For me at least) atm?

hey where you get 30KB/s i only get inbetween 5-20
contact me on irc.

South Africa's Official DC Hub

Well there are many users who are unaware of this but South Africa
does have a official DC++ hub that has been running for some time
now, I am very glad to say that the speed there is very good as well
as the support from the Masters on the hub.

My Speeds over DC varies but stands quite strong at about 60kB/s
so im not complaining.. as far as torrents are concerend well they
are supprisingly slow, we do have enough seeders on the torrents
but users seem to be limiting connections so i think that is problem there

the address for the official S.A. DC++ Hub is [ sa.hub.za.net ]
although there is a 20 GB share that is very little seing that they
are sharing alltogether on average 13 TB so feel free to sheck it out.
