Torrents versus DC++ (Speedwise)

for the speed of getting the content to your pc... they can be the same, I guess torrents would be slower if you didn't cap your upload speed just liek dc++ would be slower if you never had enough sources to max the connection. But for speed of content distribution torrents kills everything. Because you are uploading while you're downloading you basically save alot of time and this is why torrents are used for piracy so much, its ideal you publish a film torrent and even if 56kers are on it with someone with a 1mbit conny the 1mbit guy will be able to get at full speed and then seed.

dc++ is good for local communities though because it takes less to setup and you just bring your stuff to the table to share. But remember stuff takes longer to get to dc++ than torrents, these days torrents are right under newsgroups in the distribution chain (topsite -> topsite -> ftpdump -> -> newsgroups -> torrents -> emule, kazaa, irc, dc++) and you'll find that alot of people with content on dc++ probably got it from another source like torrents
 
Slow Torrent Speed.

slimothy: on average u do segmented downloads takes bout 1 hour 15 for a 700 mb movie , i just cant see a torrent doing that time depending on the users sharing most of the downloads fly. as well as users requesting files on dc i think that is their top priority , between the ops and the vip's so most users are usually up to date with their files...
 
Torrents are generally faster than dc++ in my experience, i get a solid 45-50 kb/s for a decently seeded local torrent which is pretty much my maximum line speed.

Dc++ speeds are entirely dependant on who you download from, generally the speeds don't compare to torrents unless you are lucky enough to find something which has multiple sources or download multiple files at once. Also users are not held accountable for not sharing downloaded files, with no share ratios or seeding rules, so you will often find users who limit their upstreams or share old mp3s and other garbage.

but furthermore you guys have your speeds all mixed up.. dc is much faster
than torrent. yall should try it some time and realise that there is a great
speed differance and more peers not to mention the posts on new games
/ software are always on the hub first, but well if torrents are your choice
i have nothing against it. just not happy with the speeds. oh and the official
hub has a strict file share policy whish is monitored, so there is little garbage
that does go through the users. ratios are completely fair, and that most
locals who acctually share the important goods dont limit their connections
as much as the torrent users.

lol, i'm sure that thought will comfort you while you wait for download slots from peers that are splitting their bandwidth with at least three other users and limiting to 10kb/s.
 
Depends, some clients pick netlimiter up some don't.

Gatekeeper: i meant 1 user with 3 slots open capping at 10kb/s, thats about 3,33kb/s per a user.
 
so u really reckon there are like 0 peers on anything you donwload. cause i thinks thats a little bit harsh to say even i u get 1 file from 3 users it should average bout 15 kB/s minimum and 25 kB/s max and they are only allowed to linit 25 K so really its not that sloo so where ever u get the 10 k limiting from its wrong and the hub wont allow that limit.
but ususally they only limit the forst 1 week of the month. so get ur facts straight about limiting on the hubs.
 
Gatekeeper - I was on your hub over the weekend for a few hours. The avarage speeds I was getting were terrible - and that is from people who had no slots used and were only sharing small bits & pieces - Explain that FACT

The users BTW were 165.165.HighNumbers people. So my theory is severe bandwidth limiting. I was able to pull the files I was after at about 12x the speed that they were available on the hub.

The thing about torrents is that they are more fair as there is less chance of human intervention and FIFEDOMNES

It is true that there are "bad" users who will limit uploading to something useless. All the hubs try to weed these users out and explain why that sort of behavior is evil. You get this behavior with torrents too, except using ratios makes it easier to find the bad users.

In the end you shouldn’t really be trying to compare DC and BT. They offer different things and work quite differently. BT = very small selection but no waiting for slots. DC = huge selection, but waiting in queue.

Unfortunately the local hubs and torrent sites have been negatively impacted by Telkom chopping the upload speeds. It used to be same speed both ways, now things are more like advertised, so uploads are slower than downloads - which indirectly means downloads are slower.

The DC people are aware of the flaws, the Xymox linked hubs are moving to ZaDC++, a custom client which should help reduce abusive behavior and improve the slot availability. Although developed by and for the Xymox users I expect the other hubs will want to use it too as all the hubs suffer the same problems.

Nothing is perfect, so just pick whatever you think is the best for you.

However the most significant/useful change is that the hub can control the number of simultaneous downloads a client can have. What this means is that people who try to download everything from everyone all at once will not chew up the available slots. Less concurrent downloads = faster downloads = more slots available. Hopefully.
 
If it is requested I am sure the source can be made available. It is after all based on a GPL project.

Of course as soon as the source is public, the client can no longer be trusted to be operating as intended as people could have hacked the useful stuff out.
 
dc is not an ideal source for stuff, i'd put it down there with irc, like your last bet and as for speed... you're downloading from home users with crap upload, so if you have lots of courses maybe you get fullspeed, but probably not and worst of all you find people repack or reencode releases
 
dc is too far down the "food" chain!!!!
