Torrents versus DC++ (Speedwise)

Pookfuzz - This is my concern as well - hence the question. Is it not possible to integrate some sort of "external module" that can send an encrypted response key? Or does that module also have to go under the GNU license? The point of this key would be to verify the exe that is calling it is a valid approved exe

slimothy - what do you use? FTP? - I have found very few of these around

damn straight I use ftp, special access but once you have it you're set. But lets say I didnt have ftp sites... I'd just use newsgroups and if i couldnt get an account for that I'd use torrents.

External binaries could be used, although integrating I would guess much more complex, and hacking it would actually be easier as you have the interesting bits isolated nicely.

Putting in verification routines would break compatibility with standard hubs, its bad enough asking people to switch to a specific client, asking them to use a client that only works on one or two hubs I think would be too much to ask, and trying to co-ordinate with all the other local hubs would be impossible - there is just too much politics.

FTP is the way to go, but it’s not P2P. It requires a central point with LOTS of bandwidth, something pretty rare in SA, and much like torrents the content is often limited. In many ways FTP is exactly the same as DC, except there is only one person to download from and you can’t chat or search. On the plus side there is also no waiting for slots.

Read the changelog to find out I guess.
The changelog just lists the details of the latest revisions of strongdcc, theres nothing on what has been modified in zadc++.

thats true..ish, with a standard drftpd or glftpd installation you can do 'site search release.name-group' and it works with wildcards and frftps comes with slave support so they can put files on different slaves so you get from multiple sources from the same link, but nobody ever does because one slave has enough capacity to max your download speed, they ussually have the release split in rars each on a diff slave but they dont mirror the same rar

U use Dc++ if u have no international and u have the rest of the month..

rather use torrents when you have no international! The local torrent site, (i am not going to name) rules, everything is updated quickly, on dsl 512 i get avg speeds of 53kbps, it rules! DC++ was my fav about a year ago cause you could chat but the rules just put me off, people also r always uploading so your internet completely goes Bye-Bye!

took a browse through local DC++ hubs, content looks like its been stocked by 14 year old's with no budget to rent/buy arbitrary crap US movies, so they've downloaded quantities of rubbish films that even bright teens would sneer at - and as for music - there seems to be a common thing that everyone on local hubs thinks 5fm's 'sellthrough of local music distributor product' (ie: 'playlists') = a cool collection of 'music'..
Did notice some nice collections of anime though with some users - but for the rest, it just shows a massive indiscriminate lack of individuality in choices (as well as a desire to show off collections of movies and data that can be rented/bought for 10 bux at a fleamarket or arb vidshop rather..)

Local hubs are kind've like a big bargain bin at a CNA filled with music cd's containing 'a tribute to Abba' and 'helmut lotti's greatest hits' . You look at it, laugh, feel sorry for the people who actually want 'a tribute to Abba' or 'helmut lotti' - and walk away.. Sad, given our speedy local b/w - but I guess local user content-choices reflect their consumerist lack of individuality and lack of discrimination.

In no way do I want to "encourage" piracy, but it seems to me that these local hubs "just don't get it" based on what you say and what I've seen myself.

I guess the online world more often than not reflects real life - people trade what's popular in music/movies because :-

1. They are sheep - you have to see it, because everyone else has
2. They are tone deaf
3. They are mor0ns.

Point 3, I suspect, covers pretty much all the bases.

But then there is total lazyness.
It's far easier to just share what everyone else has - the usual assorted **** - than to actually spend time putting together some decent material.
I can imagine it now, some 20 year old dufus-brain going to his buddies spot to snag his 30gig to share in the time it takes to copy it to a hard drive.

I spent two days getting 30gig of quality stuff together just to join dc++ in the first place and all I got in return was some arrogant little pr1cks and their little fiefdom of Buffy and Weezer.

Waste of space - these little j3rkoffs wouldn't know quality if it hit them in the face with a pickaxe handle.

Do you not think it is arrogant to assume your personal taste should apply to everyone? So you don't like buffy, so what, it does not mean people who do are automatically idiots - besides even if they are its not polite to point it out.

It may be true that there is a huge amount of junk, but this is true for pretty much all the P2P networks, the only way you can avoid this is by finding hubs, trackers or ftp distro sites that specialise in something specific.

I am curious as to what rules people find disagreeable or what you think could be done to make things better, I am sure all the people who run hubs/trackers would also find this interesting.

Its got nothing to do with 'personal taste' - local hubs have a uniformity of content that is bizarre and weird and more in keeping with a big community of cyborgs than individual human beings.
All have the same mainstream movies (which can be rented/bought faster than downloaded),
the same TV shows,
the same music,
the same 'very funny vid clips!'
the same tiny handful of ebooks (for those users who actually have gathered up some)

- in fact, as I said, the only place where it looks like there are individual thinking human beings on the local Hubs, is in the anime-area, where some folks have a pretty decent selections of interesting and diverse material.

The key to my (and perhaps bb_matt's) quibble with local Hubs, is partly 'content' - but more about the absolute absence of diversity.

Its like 2000 robots with very little discrimination, or ability to tell the difference or value between 'a tribute to Abba' music and (for instance) 'bootleg audios of concerts'.
These robots just all gathered up 'stuff'.
As if these collections of 'stuff' itself is somehow 'good enough'.

Its only good enough for other robots - who also think that gathering 'stuff' without any diversity or discrimination, is somehow 'good'.

Its beyond 'personal taste' - in fact, I actually wish there was some indication on local DC++ hubs that the users themselves were able to even show that they HAVE 'personal' taste - or any individual taste whatsoever.

It looks like a bunch of robots collecting 'stuff'.
No diversity at all.
It looks like 98% of local DC++ users all have exactly the same tastes, enjoyments, interests - and exactly the same gatherings and collections of music, film, video clips and occasional books.

The only real diversity is in the anime/manga area - for the rest of it, its one big indiscriminate collection - like lots of CNA bins all filled with the same 'ATribute To Helmut Lotti' CD.

Lonegunman -

It seems to me that what you are saying may at first sound very sophisticated however is essentially very simple. It seems to me that you believe that simply because a majority of people have similar tastes that they must therefore have poor taste.

For you the quality of material is more about how many people have it and distribute it than the actual material itself.

I myself abhor anime as well as most of the commercial junk shared - however I believe that everybody is unique and has a right to share what they are interested in - even if that means that most people enjoy the same things.

Why not joing the hubs and share your taste with others - maybe they will enjoy it and start collecting things you enjoy.

I think what LGM is mainly pointing out here, is the same as what I alluded to with this statement :-

I can imagine it now, some 20 year old dufus-brain going to his buddies spot to snag his 30gig to share in the time it takes to copy it to a hard drive.

dc++ does need rules and one of the rules is that you don't share bogus data. Unfortunately, what happens, is that everyone ends up just copying from each other to obtain their quota.

The way I see it, having an enforced quota over 10gb is pointless - 30gb is just crazy, because by it's very nature, it attracts all the files that people have anyway.

Regarding taste, if you read carefully, you'll see that LGM indicates that movies can just be rented from your video store. Heck, I'd rather spend R20 on a good popular movie and view it in DVD quality than download a bad rip, or a 3gig file !

So my taste isn't buffy and perhaps I was a little OTT about that, what the heck, no apologies there, I'm a total bastard and always will be - heck, I'm an unforgiving elitist d1ckhead who hates being PC, because lord knows, I spend enough of my damn time *****-footing around clients I'd sooner say "f@ck off" to.

lol. From the last paragraph it sounds like you would fit right in on some of the hubs, except for the buffy bit.

Anyway, to try get things back on topic, speed.

Which hubs/trackers or client software do you think gives the best results?

Seeing as though you have re-iterrated this point - what is wrong with 20 year olds? Why does age have to come into it at all. I know a good few 30 - 40 year olds that are even worse *icks.

I think this could be seen as insulting to alot of people.

I take you point that this may be happening ITO copying just to get share quotas up and don't agree with the practice - what is your solution? No share limit at all?

In terms of LGM's comments - it is plain to see that his main problem is "absence of diversity" - Not the fact that you can go and obtain these videos either through sale or rental. I would bet that alot of the Anime is also avaialble in this way. An example to prove this point is the fact that LGM writes about "the same TV shows," being available. I am an avid stargate fan - it is no longer shown in South Africa and cannot simply be rented. In fact most of the TV shows available either fall into this category or into the delayed broadcast category where we have to wait months before we see the shows.

A little selfish - just as is this theory that everybody should be sharing what you think they should be sharing

No, I never said that. You just said that.

As for the selfish part, yeah, sure, maybe. But I make up for that in my own way. I know who and what I am and am comfortable with that. I don't profess to be a perfect little angel, just honest.

Perhaps I have the wrong idea of what dc++ is and what it isn't.
I guess it's virtual stamp collecting.

As for speed, most of the time, my torrent downloads are under 10k per second. I make up for that by downloading 3 or 4 at a time.

I'm very selective about what I download, not believing in collecting files for the sake of it, so sometimes I'll go for a week or more without downloading anything.

Point taken - I just used that age as a "way point"

No, I'd just get booted from them for speaking my mind.

I say let the readers decide if you said it or not - even though it was in a round about way

re Stargate, you can go get all the seasons on DVD at VideoSpot in craighall park, and I think at Absolutely Fabulous video in Rivonia as well..
(videospot in craighall are serious sci-fi geeks, so everything from Star Trek Season 1 onwards, is lurking, for easy rental/ripping)

but again, 'sci-fi' isnt just some stargate/star trek TV shows - anymore than 'horror' is 'buffy' TV shows or Ring 2 remakes. Where're the sci-fi audiobooks? sci-fi radio shows? sci-fi e-books? sci-fi films pre 1960? Foreign sci-fi movies?

Not here.. just 'Stargate' and a couple of other usually US TV shows on a sci-fi theme..

The absence of diversity doesn't mean 'well this is what people like' - its showing that the people themselves either don't know much about what they supposedly 'like' to start with, or they couldn't be bothered to source anything wider than what a buddy passes them at a LAN.

Either way, it shows a total absence of conscious choice and an absence of ability to discriminate in their supposed fields of interest.

A few sci-fi themed TV shows (featuring product that's been made and designed to be suitable for a 13 year old home TV viewing audience) is not really indicative of a love of sci-fi - anymore than huge collections of completely mainstream films that are mostly 'family' or 'teen' pictures, is indicative that the person collecting them 'likes film'.
It's thoughtless stamp-collecting - no taste or choice involved in the matter :P

LGM - Series 9 of Stargate is currently being aired - there is more than just what is on show at your local video store! I make it my business to know about what i like :P

The absence of diversity doesn't mean 'well this is what people like' - its showing that the people themselves either don't know much about what they supposedly 'like' to start with, or they couldn't be bothered to source anything wider than what a buddy passes them at a LAN.

How exactly have you determined that the absence of diversity shows this?
