Torrents versus DC++ (Speedwise)

Ultimately it does not really matter. If you don’t like DC hubs that’s fine, your reasons, although subjective, are valid.

I think it is actually quite unreasonable to expect people to have exotic collections of things. As shocking as it might seem a lot of people actually like mainstream stuff, this may be due to sheltered lives and big media influence but it does not change the fact they enjoy it. To belittle their happiness and judge them on it is conceited.

I don’t really have any solutions for the criticisms given other than to suggest starting your own community centered on whatever niche media you enjoy and with your own rules.

If i take bb_matts stance from the DC++ side i could say that he is just a geek that strives to be different in the hope of attention, as he never got enough at school, work etc. I could feel the same way about the people who watch anime, i feel it has no point and is a waste of time. But if you think its diverse and special to like something cuz its your own personal taste, or because its not mainstream, doesn't mean anything.

So people download alll these episodes, guess what most of the population also watch -these series-, are they also giving in to conformity? Ask any average person what anime is and they will think you are a bit strange, even if you do explain it to them, as they will think your a 20 year old watching "deeper meaning" cartoons.

Its just to prove you dont always have to be different to think you are l33tor something.

I will admit some people share complete **** but if you tell an op to check him out and he will be warned. ( E.g Helmut Lotti mp3 collection.)

a minority watch Sci-Fi and of that minority even fewer watch anime. So there ure all special..............

And if u check the top downloaded torrents they are usually the mainstream "crap" like movies, series and how can we forget lots and lots of PORN.

I say let the readers decide if you said it or not - even though it was in a round about way

At this point, I'd say we've scared "the readers" off, whoever they may be.
Hey, wait a minute, I'm one of them ! :)

Let me reprase it anyway :-

"Waste of space - these j3rkoffs on an undetermined age/sex/social-status/culture/creed/class wouldn't know quality if it hit them in the face with a pickaxe handle."

Sometimes generalisation is the only way to make a strong point, if you want to pick apart my generalisation, be my guest, but it'll end up being a one person tennis match - serve all the aces you want, I won't be trying to return them.

I think follow the logic that LGM is writing - it makes more sense than my ramblings.

There is nothing wrong with people collecting whatever they want whenever they want to do whatever they would like to do with it.

I think we've somehow got away from this and it's turned into a questioning about what constitutes quality and diversity.

The real issue here is that there is very little diversity on a lot of the hubs - it's the same old same old. No, there's nothing wrong with that, but then, there's not much right with it either - it's bland, done, boring, staid, unimaginative, lazy.

And what stance do you have ?

4cer, I grew out of that a loooong time ago and YES, I DID have a stance and I DID want to be different and I'm damn proud of that fact.

Yes, of course I want attention - name me anyone who doesn't !

It's part of what being human is all about.

Of course, there are different types of attention seeking, from the childish, to the desperate to the inspired.

Yes, I was a long haired rock-goth-mod-something-or-other who didn't fit in with society, until I realised that nothing fits in with society, but I really don't have time to go into all that now, nor to pander to "amatuer pychology hour"

Well 4cer - you see for people like this it is still going to be the same old anime.

What people like matt & LGM want is something new and exciting - something they havn't seen before - otherwise its "just the same old same old". I would likely say though that it is these people that are board with life and will not really be happy wherever they go or whatever they do - it will never be unique enough for them. Whats the next step - custom designed anime series for the individual?

The fact that you say "it's bland, done, boring, staid, unimaginative, lazy" does not mean that it is so. Those are all subjective terms. I would probably say that you "wouldn't know quality if it hit you in the face." whatever "age/sex/social-status/culture/creed/class".

Is my point made?

Quality as the name suggests is qualitative and not quantitative - and therefore not quantifiable. It rests with popular opinion as to what is quality - and unfortunatly popular opinion wins everytime :D

I was a long haired rock-goth-mod-something-or-other

Part of not fitting into society was people rejecting your choices - correct?

Is that not what you are doing now by rejecting others choices. You have been rejected - so now you reject. Kind of an atithesis isn't it.

It would be if you actually had one.

Yes, terrible isn't it ?
Using this really long life to piddle around doing the same as everyone else watching and listening to the same old rehashed stuff again and again and again and again ad nasuem.

How sad that I want something new and exciting, there must be something terribly wrong with my head to want that.

Hmm, let me see, how many countries are in the world ?
How many cultures ?
How many books ?
How many movies ?
How many ideas ?
How much to explore ?

Well, according to your mindset, very little.

Sorry for you then.

I'm 38 and felt like I've done nothing yet - this life fascinates and intrigues me beyond measure. I revel in anything that is different to the norm, even if it shocks me.

It's called being alive.

Point made ?

Are you seriously trying to suggest that a wide range of different people - all hosting EXACTLY the same TV episodes, mainstream films, music, and video clips - means that
ALL of these people have individually decided that the 'best' data they can choose to have - 'just happens to be' EXACTLY the same TV episodes, mainstream films, music and videoclips, as everyone else?

That's not statistically likely - (unless they're all mindless robots from the same Factory) therefore this indicates not only mass conformity in decision-making of personal preference (not a good indicator of IQ btw) as well as - a total absence of discernment and discrimination in their individual thinking, preferences and choices.

Think of it like a clothing store, and a street outside.
And everyones wearing the same colour shirt. I'm saying - therefore they obviously dont care or even notice the kind of shirt they're wearing in the first place.

And you're trying to say 'gee, just coz everyone on the street is wearing the same red shirt - how does this mean they know nothing of fashion or choices - and maybe they all like the same red shirt.'
Not likely.

Ok Byrd.

I LOVE DIVERSITY

is that clear now ?

And how much more complicated do you want LGM to be ?
Isn't what he is saying blatantly obvious ?
It certainly reads that way to me ?

It seems you need to have everything spelled out for you - or you are being pedantic. I suspect the latter.

yeah
'Us local DC++ users all have exactly the same arb files - but this doesn't mean we're stupid and mindless - it means ummm we've all decided that this is EXACTLY what we want, and we're umm real clever, ja! (And anyone who points out that hundreds of local users with the same arb files - is a big fat ****, is not understanding how CLEVER we local DC++ users are, for all choosing exactly the same files.")

Rightttt

Plainly - Your purpose here is to insult those who do not have the same mindset as yourselves. As I have said before - you reject mainstream because you feel rejected.

You don't choose to allow people their own choice - you actively seek to make them diverse.

My point about things being oversimplified is that choice in entertainment is far more complex in the human psyche than selecting the colour of a shirt.

"exactly the same" files. I doubt that

BRIAN: You're all individuals!
FOLLOWERS: Yes, we're all individuals!
BRIAN: You're all different!
FOLLOWERS: Yes, we are all different!
DENNIS: I'm not.

That viewpoint is about as superficial as the movies and music you criticise. ;)

Byrd - what 'mindset'?

You all have the same damn files. You're all just one person.

And I'd bet it's a 13 year old who loves 5fm playlists, Blockbuster Video family titles, and a half dozen other things off TV.

'mindset' implies diversity of thought.

Local DC++ content shows no diversity at all.

Local DC++ content is just one person's choice, and they arent very adult or more importantly - diverse ones either :P

Get some file lists off any local hub, and start seeing the patterns of 'sameness'.

Ok i will admit that the ppl who only want a song because it is popular at the moment or watch a series because everyone else is, are mindless morons. I watch the series i like and enjoy and most of the series i really enjoy watching aren't on Dc++ and they are usually, the more deeper meaning series, (e.g Joan of Arcadia). So we will all have our special tastes like im still in high school but prefer to listen to songs from the 80's, doesn't mean i dont listen to the new bands and wat i like.

Most people will enjoy the same stuff - some more than others, otherwise hollywood would have a b!tch of a time trying to make a different revision of everything just so it will appeal to so and so, and him and him etc.

So by seeking attention and acting different u are making urself an outsider cuz no two people have the same tastes, so of course everyone will be different, but not watching something cuz its main stream or because its been down b4 will lead to a very boring life.

All im saying is society is very judgemental, for example when a girl gets to know me and she finds out how much im into computers, it usually scares them as anybody who has an interest in technology is a NERD. So wat am i supposed to do if im different to the norm and they dont like it.

Dont make urself an outsider to be different, you can have your special tastes and interests but u can still fit in with society.

I wish the girls in my class didn't always crack jokes at me about being a nerd and computer freak, but its usaully just a cover up for their worries. Society is a b!tch with everything we are supposed to look like and supposed to do and eat, drink wear etc. and most of the mindless drones just follow, but its us few that are perceived as the special ones for wat we do usually end up the most happy in life, as we do most things as we enjoy them instead of because John over there is doing it.

I wish the girls in my class didn't always crack jokes at me about being a nerd and computer freak

4cer - Don't worry it doesn't last forever. Eventually when you start working - things will turn around. I now laugh at the "popular" guys that used to be in my school. They are like SPAR "Managers" ie suped up cashiers or the like. They have a wife (cause they got her pregnant) and 2 screaming kids at home. Heh Karma hey. At this stage it is likely that you will be driving the flashy car etc and owning all the girls. You can take it easy knowing this is ahead of you.

But - and here is a very important BUT. Don't get bitter about being "the outsider". Realise you are an individual - and know eventualy everybody fits in somewhere. You fit in here in this community dont ya?

Even Matt & LGM fitt in somewhere (like a dungeon in eastern Europe - hows that for a new experience ;) )
