I wish this not to be true, but I fear that it probably is likely. Fazda, no ideas on pricing from your side yet? Subaru don't offer any nice affordable toys at the moment.
 
Ugly, ride height of a 4x4 and is slow.
Worth it for under 300 000 for some.
I wouldn't waste my money tbh.

What does the Subaru version look like?

Sorry our most affordable 'toys" are the WRX at 419k and the XV at 339k.

Entry level Forester is cheaper and obviously you will get a discount on the WRx, but not the XV

Toyota going from bad to stupid in under 6 seconds - well if they in competition with themselves @ least they will win something ;-)
 
I've got a couple of friends (girls) that are interested in this car. They say the price is going to be around about R330k.
Should be priced slightly less than a Golf GTI.

I like the look except for the braai grill.

I like both styles, for once the Subaru's style is 'toned' down and the Toyota more aggressive than what is normally the case.
 
Just read the road tests/ driving impressions of both of them in the January Top Gear Magazine....very interesting. :)
 
If it comes in at less than R300k then I'll be interested for sure.. much more than that, and it just won't be so appealing anymore.
 
Apart from the fact that it's a full-on Coupe (expect a convertible if it takes off) this seems to be the only car that is truly focused on implementing the philosophy behind Mazda's MX-5. Do that correctly and you cannot go wrong.

RWD, awesome balance, lightweight, short shifting gearbox, double wishbone suspension etc.

I really hope this car is as awesome as it sounds. From the reviews I've seen so far it seems to be a real winner. Now if only they can keep the price in check, this will definitely be on my shopping list in a few years. That shopping list has so far been ridiculously short.

It's about time someone builds a decent driver's car again instead of partaking in these ridiculous Feature/Horsepower wars. Expect other manufacturers to follow if the FT86 makes a decent dent in the market. Who knows, I might have to abandon my Lotus Elise dream if this one works out...

They took a 350Z and put a smaller 2l engine in it with a few small changes to the lights and boot.

I presume you are joking...right??! :wtf:

It is a totally new car designed from the floor up with all the engineering input coming from Subaru. Toyota have their own touches and a slightly differently tuned engine, but if you think that there is anything from any other Japanese car in either of these cars you are smoking your socks.
 
I like the idea of coupes replacing hatbacks, brilliant!!
I wonder if Audi will follow suit, build a R6, R4 and maybe a R2 for under 300/350K with a 2.0T engine!

:erm:
No dude. The 350Z is more like a muscle car, heavy, powerful but with great chassis design and handling.
The only thing these cars have in common is that they're sportscars.

The problem with German manufacturers is that they seem to lack the focus to build something like this. I hope that changes soon.
They need to focus on getting the basics right first. Ignore the spec sheets from competitors and focus on DRIVING.

Take the Z3 for example, crap gearbox etc. then they try to "fix it" by adding power and features, drive by wire FTL. The new Z4 was a big improvement but by the time BMW were done updating it it's more an expensive and luxurious 350/370Z competitor than a serious contender for cars like these.
The Audi TT also doesn't come close to being a "focused" car. They just keep improving it to fix problems instead of going back to the drawing board.

More with less. That's what we need.
The Japs seem to understand that. Maybe it's because they're not that attached to a more expensive target market and can dump unnecessary and costly luxuries, giving us something more in line with the principles set out by Colin Chapman and not the sterile, over inflated needs of the the average Dentist/Businessman.

No doubt that even if the Germans design something that can compete with the FT86/MX-5 you'd still be paying and arm and a leg for the "privilege" of driving it.

Oh, and for the love of god could companies please start to realize the age old saying "it's better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" actually does have some value when you get the basics right, more so with a sportscar. Whenever I chat to someone about cars and they pull the engine specs from the internet in order to form an opinion I want to crap in my pants.
