Anyone have any experience with this puppy?

http://www.tp-link.co.za/products/details/?model=TD-W9980

They retail for about R1290, or R999 ex vat from Corex. Looks to be a pretty decent router, with nice wifi, gigabit lan, dual usb etc etc etc...

I will use it as a bridged modem with a Mikrotik doing the routing, so this will just be a modem and wireless entry point.

Cheers
Mark

Hmm, I am looking for a new router and am considering getting a VDSL one to future proof myself as I may want to upgrade to VDSL sometime in the near future and was wondering how this TP Link is.

I was just looking at these as well, thinking about getting one.

I see on their site that there is Annex B "Coming Soon" which supports VDSL and ADSL. TD-W9980B

I must say I'm very happy with TP-LINK products. My TL-WR1043ND had an up time of about 263 days at one stage. *knock on wood* without any issues at all in past 2 years. The TrendNet piece of **** needed a reboot every second day so bought the TP-LINK.

It seems as if the non Annex B supports ADSL as well as VDSL already!?

I assume you mean Annex A. I didn't see that when reading the short description. Ok so I don't need to wait, i can get the one OP posted.

So what does the Annex A and Annex B actually mean?

That is what I was wondering, I sent an email through to TP Link to see if we can get some answers. Perhaps just slightly different hardware - like a different revision, perhaps even due to one supplier not being able to supply them with say the same USB ports or something like that?

Got myself the TP-LINK W8968 from Uniterm Direct on Monday. At R499ex VAT it's a bargain. ADSL with 3G failover and up to 300mbps wireless. Also does file sharing from the USB. So much better than the piece of sh*t Billion W40 I had previously.

OK, so seems Annex A and Annex B refer to the infrastructure which Telkom use.

Annex A is ADSL over PSTN (as used in the UK)
Annex B is ADSL over ISDN (as used in Germany)

I would imagine we use Annex A here in South Africa? Also as a heads up, it seems as if there are a few other TP-Link routers (TD-W8980) which can be crossflashed with the 9980 firmware and then you can get VDSL support due to them using the same chipsets - the 9980 uses Lantiq chipsets, same hardware as the 8980:
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TD-W8980_v1

The Lantiq chipset's seem to be pretty decent, sort of the best of both worlds more or less when compared to Tenda chips and Broadcom chips.

where did you buy them?

i got them from pc-direct - they were the only people in cape town at the time who had stock of the model.

the entire house is covered - as is my neighbor (for internet use)
for media streaming, i have connected from the main bedroom (2 rooms away) and the lounge which is further away, but in direct line of sight

i am a totally noob when it comes to routers... question:

i got a 4meg line from helkom... which one of these routers will work well? basically i have 2 rokus, a ps4, 2 ipads, 1 iphone and 1 S5 and my laptop that runs off the wifi... never all at once, maybe 5 connections to wifi max sometimes...

i want something that i dont have to reboot every second day(i got a helkom billion 400g router)... will the TP-LINK W8968 work? i currently get around 420kbs download speed on the billion...

Anyone mind me using their Corex account to get two of these?

Used to have an account with them years ago but they closed it due to not using it and it's a massive sclep to open an account just to get two routers from them.

I don't know Corex, but I bought my W8970 from Uniterm direct. As a MyBB member you get discount from them. Maybe ask for a quote and your discount?
They have a rep here as well.

Doesn't seem as if anyone has stock of the W9980 and some suppliers are even stating that it is EoL... Which doesn't seem right?

Uniterm Direct doesn't list the W9980 on their site, I've sent them an email asking if they do.

How much discount dowe get?
The best would be to contact the rep, kernel, here on MyBB.
Some products have more room to maneuver than others. I got a very good discount on my W8970, but I think it was on its way out.
I think I got it for between R200.00 - R300.00 less than its advertised price.

A friend forwarded me an email from his supplier of TP-Link and they stated that the W9980 was EoL and the Archer is the replacement, interesting considering the Archer does not support VDSL and the W9980 is only available in the UK later on this month.

So I think if you want a TP Link VDSL router best is to try get now while some people might still have stock.
Unless the supplier had no clue what they were talking about.
