TP-LINK TD-W9980

What is better then this router in the same price range

Better is relative - everyone has different needs and their ADSL lines are different distances from the exchange and and and.

Although Billion are bringing in some 8800 VDSL routers, price is a teeny bit higher but it is available locally (or soon to be, Friday this week or Monday next week Tarsus should hopefully receive their stock).

There is the Telkom Pace and the Mweb FON routers.

I think Zyxel have a VDSL router in the same price range, although have heard mixed things about them. Some say they're great, I know that some have issues with their firmware. Most seem to be using the small VMG1312 and most seem happy with it.

I only use TP-Link for networking, great reliable products that do the job well..

Save your money - this router does not work 100% on VDSL in SA, see my other posts. I had to go buy the crappy telkom pace router but I have not given up on the 9980, contacted TP-Link and awaiting a response. If this doesnt work then I see there is some progress on the openwrt website on the 8890 (same HW ans 9980)

EDIT - Ok thanks to help from other i found out that to get this modem working in SA the VLAN needs to be set to 835 - it works 100% now so I can recommend it.

Ok, ffs I give up. I've been struggling to upgrade the firmware of this router. Anyone can help me as I don't have any more patients. Might just sell it and rather got for a router that is straight vdsl.

I have never done it myself, you may get more assistance over on the Kitz forum.

If you do decide to get a different VDSL router I can recommend the 8800NXL - only been using it for just over a day but I am pretty darn impressed so far! :D
It runs a Broadcom chipset, the TP Link uses a Lantiq chipset.

How much is the 8800NLX and where can I get it. I am about 120m away from my exchange. Is the broadcom chip good for that distance?

Broadcom is good for just about anything, although is the preferred one if you are far away from the exchange.
Being closer obviously won't make your line bad because you are running a Broadcom chipset for example.

Price will probably be similar to the TP Link actually, as for where you can get it from. Not too sure, I got mine directly from Tarsus. Sorry :/

If you know anyone coming up to durban I can flash it for you - or post it up to me with another prepaid envelope and I will flash it and send it back to you.

Got already the billion. On adsl2+ it's attainable goes up to 27mb/s. My line must still be upgraded to vdsl. Techie coming tomorrow to switch me over. W8980 is available to a lucky person for R650

Yeah, lots of people in the UK were super happy with the ADSL 2+ performance as well compared to their previous routers due to the better stats.
What was max attainable before on your previous router?
