TP-Link W8960N or TP-Link WR1043ND

So I am planning on buying a new router.

I hear everyone raving about these TP-Link routers, not to mention they very cheap, so I'v decided to get one.

Here are my options:

Question:

1) Whats the difference between the above mentioned routers?
2) Is dbg.co.za a reliable place to shop? ie can I trust them with my $$$
3) How good is the wireless signal on these routers?
4) Is it a good choice or should I be looking at something else, like the D-Link 2750U? (which is R200 more expensive)

Any feedback will be appreciated!

1) One's an ADSL Router, the other is just a router with a WAN port. Item description shows which is which. Oh, and one is 10/100 LAN (ADSL router), the 1043ND is gigabit LAN.
2) Not entirely sure but i think they are the best place to buy TP-Link equipment.
3) The 1043 is really good, I have one of these.
4) The reason you'd want a D-Link is for compatibility. You may also want to search the news articles + forums for the names of the routers to find reviews etc.

If you get the WR1043ND, update to the latest firmware. There was a problem with the old firmware that cause network transmissions to randomly stop, fixed by a restart.

Seems like I need an ADSL router, not just a router. It needs to have an RJ-11 port for the phone line. So the W8960N seems to be the better option.

Is dbg only an online store or do they have a shop I could go to? I'm not that far from Bedfordview so would like to go there.

What do you mean by compatibility with dlink? Why would the dlink be more compatible than the TP-Link?

You could purchase a simple tiny ADSL router and plug it into the 1043ND - for the gigabit LAN benefit. This is how I currently run my operation at home.

You may have to wait for someone else to respond because I don't have any experience with dbg.

As for compatibility, I meant compatibility with other D-Link products. They just seem to work better together.
 
Buy the TP-Link products from Uniterm Direct off bidorbuy.co.za, because on their own website they're more expensive.
 
I don't have a bidorbuy account, how much cheaper can they be on bob? I mean 560 bucks for a router, thats not bad at all.

@DBG (Uniterm Direct's website): R545.00 (excl VAT) / R621.30 (incl VAT) + shipping of R75.00 (excl VAT) for SA Postal Service, or R95.00 (excl VAT) for their faster courier.

So ja, it pretty much comes down to R595 (BoB) vs. R706.8 (DBG) if you're staying near Jhb/Cpt.
 
I live close to bedfordview, so I bought the tp-link adsl 2+ modem router W8960N R557 and went to collect.

I had the same thoughts. Live in bedfordview so would be able to pick up.
 
Because creating a bob account is not worth the R57 in saving :) I may be a Jew, but I'm not stingy :D


Edit: I just hope the wireless on these routers are good. Iv never used a tp link before.

I have the TP-Link W8960N that I collected from Uniterm Direct in Cape Town. Nice ADSL router, did have a problem initially with wireless dying on me but Uniterm replaced it under warrantee and no problems since.

Signal reach is good, my kids laptops connect from anywhere in the house on wireless G, I added a wireless N dongle to my desktop and connect to the router at 130MB.

Yep, thanks! well lets hope my unit is not faulty and the wireless will be good.
 
As a word of advice, check the TP-Link website for the latest firmware, compare firmware versions to yours and see what has changed. Could be useful.

Is it possible to have multiple PPPOE dialup connections through that TP LINK?
 
Well I'm using the router now. It's actually for my gf's house. The signal is quite good considering the distance and the thickness of the walls. I get one bar less than full signal and sometimes it jumps to full bars. I haven't checked for latest firmware, will do that tomorrow probably. I was wondering, can this router use the dd wrt firmware?

Ah ..you zigged where you should have zagged. :p As friend stroebs said, you could have done better with the 1043ND.

You would have had:

  • 3-antenna coverage which, frankly is better than 2 (at home I have my 1043ND and a 3420 <3m from each other and the coverage off the 1043 really *is* better)
  • a WAN port separate/removed from a potentially sacrificial cheap-ass 'modem' (single port router dumbed down into bridge mode) ..when that lightning pulse rings down the phone line and kills the modem, your expensive 1043 is just better off being away from that heat
  • gigabit wired connection should you need it ..and it's not something you can just up and get: you have it or you don't
  • don't forget that USB port into which you can already plug something like a flash drive/ext HDD ..and maybe, with some praying to the machine gods, a 3G stick for failover..
  • dd-wrt ..hell, you could have bought it from Uniterm pre-flashed with it, still full of warranty goodness.

Still, it's not like you got a bad product or anything ..just not the right one. :rolleyes:

Who says its not the right product???? as far as I am concerned, this was the perfect choice for my GIRLFRIEND.... Signal is strong enough to reach her room, thats all I cared about :)

I was only querying if this modem/router can use dd wrt firmware because I am thinking of getting MYSELF a TP -Link for my home. Now I know that this particular model doesnt and I will most likely get the 1043 for myself.


The money that I spent on this modem/router is my GIRLFRIENDS, not mine, so I needed a good reliable, cheapish router. This was the perfect choice. I logged in to the modem/router and this modem/router is so customizable as it is, my GIRLFRIEND will never need to do anything with it.

I needed an ADSL2+ Modem/Router for my GIRLFRIEND, not just a router. Otherwise I would have needed to spend more money on getting modem to connect it to.


For myself, I will get the 1043 when I get bored of my Netgear 2200 router :P
