Tracert (2nd hop)

I must thank everyone on this topic again for their concerted efforts in helping me yesterday.

There has been such a marked improvement today. This is the first day in weeks I have been able to actually get some work done, web sites are loading fast especially the Wordpress admin backend which was notoriously slow for me all the time.

Now I think I might actually just upgrade to a 4Mbps or 10Mbps line.

THANK YOU ALL !!!!

post your attentuation and SNR numbers before you do that upgrade...

Thanks but for me the matter will remain unsolved until we see what has been changed or what happened to improve performance.

Hi daniellgr, I am hoping that fixing the ASSIA profile with Telkom was the real problem. It has remained stable continuously since I phoned them yesterday. For me the most noticeable thing is browsing, pages used to take anywhere from 10-30 seconds to load and now they are just 2-5 seconds, especially facebook which now loads in 1/10th of the time it used to take.

Another highly noticeable change is accessing my servers in the US through SSH and Remote Desktop. Remote Desktop used to be totally unusable most days and now it is snappy and fast. SSH used to be sluggish most days too and now it's instant.

I am still monitoring closely to see if anything changes. Is there anything else I should be checking?

I cannot tell you how much snappier browsing web pages has been since I phoned 10210 and got them to change the ASSIA profile. I am not imagining things but also not jumping for joy until tomorrow morning when I start working again .... for now, tv and rest time, been an entire day fiddling with settings ..... thanks so much everyone.

When I phone them they don't know what ASSIA is, what did you say? I'm in the same position as you were now and I would like to get my ping down.

Hi Toffelman, read through the following posts from earlier in this topic. I simply called asked her to switch me to the 1Mbp/s profile while my router was off. I kept her on the line when she said it was done and I checked my router was showing the correct 1Mbp profile. I then asked her to switch it back to the 2Mbp/s profile once again with the router turned off again and when she said it was done I once again turned on and waited till it showed the correct info.

You can but it's only temporary.

Call 10210, switch your router off and ask them to change you over to the 1Mb/s profile, once done turn router on and check to see that it's syncing at 1Mb/s, turn it off again and ask them to put you back onto your normal profile ie 2Mb/s and once done turn your router on again and check the sync. You should now see it syncing at 2Mb/s and not 2554/508 etc, you will also notice an improvement in your SNR & Attenuation.

Look at where it says Rate (Kbps): Downstream 2554 Upstream 508

When they change you to 1Mb/s profile it should read 1024/512 and when switched back to the 2Mb/s profile it should read 2048/512.

Keep in mind that this is not permanent, assia will kick in again at some point and then you will have to repeat this procedure. It's annoying as hell and I've heard rumours of an exclusion list but no idea how true that is.

Yeah. I did it twice, both times it reverted. I've now given up and learnt to live with it against my will.

That's good to know ponder, I check daily now on my router to make sure it has the correct sync speeds and will monitor it daily. Wasn't a big fuss to phone and sort it out the first time, not to say next time I won't encounter someone who doesn't know what the hell I am talking about.

What is the whole explanation and debacle behind ASSIA anyway?
