Tracert (2nd hop)

Seriously, why does your pings have so many decimals? :wtf:

I'm really not sure, they all start timing out once they leave SA. What is weird is that if I do the same traces in an hour they might just complete all the way to the end point. Facebook this morning was timing out like that but now it goes all the way.

I mean I've never seen pings with decimals, normally just integers. It's easier to read with integers only anyway.

I simply cannot find what is uploading data, dropbox, google drive and icloud drive all turned off, I only turn them on manually especially these days.

In Resource Monitor on Windows you can check which processes/services are using bandwidth.

Yes indeed it is off my Macbook so yes it's Linux :D

lol no, then it's freebsd ;)

I suggest you see if your router supports snmp, and if so, install something like cacti or mrtg to monitor traffic volumes.

Same thing on Mac but looks a little different. See the attached screengrab sorted by Sent Data. This is since 8:30am this morning.

How sure are you no-one else is on your wifi?

And when last was your router reset? just trying to correlate the traffic reported by your router vs what the mac reports.

You really should try a wired cable and disable wi-fi on the router while doing so.

I'm always security conscious and that often does cross my mind. Other than the attached how else would I know. I can account for all the attached devices on the list.

Was reset last on Sunday I think. Shall I do a fresh start now or perhaps let me get on the phone to 10210 and try the ASSIA profile change suggestion.

a 2 meg down/500k up line can easily be saturated.

Also check if you can see associated stations. A baddie could be using static IP configuration, not DHCP, so DHCP leases aren't an exhaustive list.

Thanks daniellgr, I did install WiFi Analyzer and I also did switch manually to Channel 6 for now. As you can see from the attached screen grab there are no other networks around me.

As an aside: apps like WiFi Analyzer looks at your device's network interface, and the networks it can see. So it can only show you interfering WiFi networks. It cannot show other sources of RF interference in the 2.4 GHz band such as Bluetooth, a leaky microwave, some cordless phones, some baby monitors, some USB 3.0 devices and cables.... So while the apps give a good indication of interference, they are limited to WiFi interference.

Yes correct. Those are all possibilities that have to be considered one by one and eliminated. But based on the results above, it is unlikely the reason for the issues at this stage.

The answer is as I and others have indicated is to completely exclude wi fi out of the equation with a cable connection to the router, disabling wifi as well.

And, in true Apple style, top of the range Macbook Pro has NO lan connection, I forgot that. They really are dunces some times.

Have in the last hour, done a full factory reset on the router, reconfigured my WebAfrica account and also tightened up security with MAC filtering so I am now 100% sure every device on the network was manually allowed by me using their mac address.

Still getting lots of timeouts on traceroute's though. Now to phone 10210 and try the ASSIA profile fix, hoping they can understand what the hell I am talking about.

Where do I see on my stats page when that has changed ???

OKAY I think we are onto something here daniellgr. Look at the two traces below.

First is from my Macbook using WiFi.

Second is from a Windows PC wired to the router (because as I said Macbook Pro has no bloody lan port)

I will let others more familiar with ASSIA etc to advise you on those aspects.

Traces I ran now to those same sites from my place in PTA on the Telkom network with Telkom ISP are summarised below. No time outs except for the normal ones.

(1) Wordpress 192.0.78.12; 9 hops 178 ms [basically the long distance value]
(2) Photo shelter 69.22.188.80; 13 hops 261 ms
(3) Twitter 199.16.156.198; 13 hops 282 ms
(4) Facebook 31.13.90.36; 11 hops 180 ms

What I did notice is the routing on your traces are "messy" all over the place to devices that mine do not show .....

I guess a thorough examination of all protocols running and ports used would possibly suggest what is going on.
