Tracker vs no Tracker

Hi all,

I've just ordered my new car today and was wondering if I should get a tracking device installed or not.

To give some context I previously had a VW polo that was stolen and retrieved twice in 6 months. The first time round the insurance company repaired my car and I had to make peace with the fact that it had been stolen, damaged and repaired and so I continued to drive it. When it was stolen the second time it was written off.

Quite a few people recommended to me to scrap the tracker altogether with the reasoning of "if they steal it let them keep it, you really want that car back anyway".

On the financial side of things the Tracker unit costs R200pm for 36 months and it reduces my premiums by approx R60 per month. So if I don't install a Tracker unit I'd be saving R130 per month.

Any advice and comments would be appreciated.

Depends.

What make/model is your car?

I subscribe to the same opinion as the people that told you to not bother installing one. Stolen and Recovered devalues the car. If they steal it, why would you want the headache of getting it back with the very likely outcome of it being damaged and the resale value shot to hell?

I'd rather pay the extra R60 a month and hope to hell they never find the car again if it gets stolen. Stolen cars are rarely ever the same again.

To be honest that's the way I'm tending to lean, albeit counter intuitive. I also gain R130 per month in the process

this??

And then insurers require you to test the thing every 6 months (if only it was as easy as pressing a button on a site and getting a result) that often involves phoning in and being on the move (a drag). And if its stolen and you didn't test it was working they might reject your claim.

And if it doesn't reduce the insurance by the same amount as it costs, there is no point.

www.beame.co.za. .

R99 PM bought the thing out rite this is for the Figo 2015 cost about a grand .

My tracker for my A45 cost R119 PM cost about R1500 bought out rite .

I save what i paid for the installation in one year and do not loose 15% if any of the cars are stolen .
Short term pain long term gain .

BTW i would never ever consider owning a POLO , nice car but risks are just to high .

I was required to have a tracking device installed, otherwise theft and hijacking wouldn't be covered. You can also speak to your insurance company, sometimes they have discount agreements with tracking companies.

Ya tracker is discounted with Santam... I'm not required to have one thankfully

When I asked about Tracker when I got my new car, the only difference it made was no excess if the car got stolen.

Wasn't enough for me to justify the cost. IMO they're a waste of time.
