Most car fatalities do not happen at very high speeds.

i think there was a big dispute a while back about the speed kills slogan. look at road acidents on our roads. i dont know the stats but i can wager that a majority of accidents are caused from anything but speeding.

so i agree with this.

I maintain speeding is fun when done responsily, because believe it or not there are places that exist for such wants where the only person at risk is the driver.

Definitely. They're called racetracks. NOT public roads. You can do Mach 3 on a racetrack and kill yourself in the process for all I care.

an bear in mind the idiots who drive 60km/h are just as reckless as the ones who drive 240KM/h (on the highway)

Of course, except for the small little detail that you are carrying SIXTEEN TIMES the kinetic energy at 240 km/h than at 60 km/h.

i dont deny excessive speed causes more damage but certainly not the only reason why their are accidents

Absolutely. Speeding is not the only culprit; far from it. In fact, I'm more tolerant of speeders than I am of those taxi bastards who have absolutely no regard for anybody.

Typical biker mentality.
Ja - that reminds me of any number of car accidents I've seen - little piles of twisted junk with no means of escape.

Stupid riders/drivers = dead drivers/riders

Speeding has got nothing to do with it. Never in an urban area (dogs, cats and kids) - its called common sense, responsible driving, riding.

There is no point in never arriving.

I got a R400 fine for doing 80 in a 60 zone:mad:

Damn, I only got a R70 fine for doing the same thing. :p Was actually going about 110 at the time but luckily saw the camera in time to brake!

Amen!

... but I would like to add, that we need better and consistent enforcement of ALL traffic law, not just that which generates revenue. This needs to be done from pedestrians upwards.

How many times have any of you:
1. Had a pedestrian step into the road as though they're immortal and had to swerve violently to avoid them?
2 Seen a pedestrian aimlessly wandering along a motorway?
3. (My own personal favourite) Had a pedestrian cross the motorway in front of you?

So true! Of course I doubt many pedestrians would bother paying fines so they're not interested in them. And if you do actually (through no fault of your own) hit someone in those circumstances you'll be up for culpable homicide.

From one of the related articles on the SAVRALA website:

Under such circumstances, an arrested person is “entitled to leave” and the peace officer would not be lawfully permitted to prevent this. The practical consequences of “fleeing” are, however, not particularly appealing as experience has shown that over zealous officials can cause tremendous problems for arrested persons demanding to be freed and insisting on their rights. Trumped-up charges of drunken driving, assault on a police officer and escaping from custody for example, have been known to be brought against the arrested person.

Gotta love the law abiding cops!

I'm generally the one who has to sign for summons' for my dad :( I always try to get out of signing it though, "Errr... I'm 15, I can't sign that!" It never works though!

Most fines that we recieve in our household are for 78 in 60 zones, or 131 in 120 zones.

I got my licence in February this year, and I must admit, I often hard to keep your speed down. Especially when I get to take "daddy's car" for a spin :)

What pisses me off, is kids my age, getting these uber sooped up cars with subs the size of their mags. They have little experiance, and drive with their music at eardrum breaking volumes. I have no problem with an experianced driver driving fast, but to see a little city golf with 5 teenagers in it, trying to handle excess speeds...

Cheers, Nick

The scary part is I always drove responsibly, thinking of myself as a good driver. I recently got a huge wakeupcall when I took my fathers car for a spin. Never drive fast around corners. I did it the first time... something on the road, might have been some loose sand or something, car spun out I got the shock of my life. Now before anyone jumps in and goes "ja serves you right blah blah blah" Let me do it, it was all my own fault.

One of the problems is I(and many other motorists out there) think nah expensive cars with their ESP will keep my off the kerb/out the bush.

The big lesson I learned was no ESP system can save you from your own stupidity. Some people also think quattro from Audi will help you..... it wont. The moment you come off the power Quattro does absolutely nothing.

I still drive slightly over the speed limit... say 128-130 in a 120 zone and 70 in a 60 zone but I will no longer take stupid chances. It was the only time I ever did it but it was one time too many. Atleast I was lucky in that the damage was pretty much nothing and there was nobody else involved.

There is a good reason why drivers under 25 pay high insurance premiums.

15? (I see you now 18 - same applies.) It's called coercion. Never sign for a summons that is not in your name (it is not your summons!) Profess inability to speak or write or deaf - write the cop a note - you don't know the person (receiving the summons.)

5 teenagers? An accident waiting to happen. If you survive past 24 you're on your way to long term survivability - if you survive past 30 you may just live till you get old. Cars and bikes are killers (but then so is slipping in the bath.)

Never drive fast around corners? It's the corners that separate the men from the boys - any idiot can drive/ride fast on the straight. Nothing more irritating than a person who slows down to nothing for a corner - shall I get out and push??! (Walk/run alongside and tap on your window?!) Go for an advanced driving course (or teach yourself the skills required.)

The more electronic gizmos the further you are separated from the road - do you think "sliders" are using ESP?!

Nothing more irritating than people driving expensive cars - who can't drive! Don't have clue, never had one and no interest in getting one. Nothing will keep you out of the kerb/or bush - except SKILLZ :D Get a clue - it could just save your life! :)

Yeah "skillz" gonna save you.... How good of a driver is Schumacher/Alonso and they still hit walls.

No such thing as a "slider" it is called drfiting and I dont crawl round corners I just dont race round them like the kief brothers in their sooped up Sh1it Golfs.

Nothing more irritating than people who think they can drive and try and lecture others about it.

Anyone who turns off ESP on public roads is a moron... if you have it use it.

Love people who hate people who drive expensive cars "but cant drive"... just cos you cant afford expensive cars dont rag on those who can.

I'll try one of these next time! Thanks :)

Couldn't agree more! I drive an old 87 Merc - comparable to a tank (same fuel consumption!). Whenever I see some knobby in his 5 series or a turban clad mother in a nice car, I think to myself "WHYYY!!!??" (Yes, I suppose I'm jealous!)

Ya - shumacher and alonso are doing 300+ //all tires, technology have a limit.

I blow creeps like you off the road everyday - sometimes 3 or 5 at a time (my car) - I am not lecturing - simply giving my view.

Aren't you the moron that raised the issue of ESP in the first place?

As said - I eat creeps like you for breakfast. Whichever way - ultimately cars are a waste of time and petrol - get yourself some real transport - like a motorcycle - then talk to me of skillz. And expense has nothing to do with it - was simply responding to an earlier post.

Aaawww shame...little boys and their toys.

A childhood friend of mine (this happened in 2001), his five year old son, and his unborn baby of his the pregnant now deceased wife were blisfully on their way on a Friday afternoon from Bryanston to the Pilansberg when about 40km outside Suncity on that long straight strech, (yes you little speeders now the spot - lekker ne) was hit head on by a young racer in a bmw. Yup..all killed. Yummy scene to visit. I know I went there to put up a cross, you may have seen it near the fourway stop. Speeding is great hey.

But wait there's more, about a year later a business colleague was peacefully waiting at a Robot near fourways mall when out of the blue yonder behind him came a speeding biker, smaked into the back of his volvo station wagon, went right though killed my pal and passed like an exploded tin of rasberry jam through the windscreen.

So yes, I equate speeders with rapists, farm murderers, armed robbers and child molesters. They have taken just as many lives. So my liitle chums, if you wanna speed you gonna become some attractive "29's" gang biatch yo @ss and yep you will be rewarded with some nice deadly incurable infection.

So speed on, have fun, my goverment, my taxes, my beautiful SA will reward you for all your effort. Enjoy it you little ****ers.

Haha that's brilliant! :D

Well yeah I agree with BTech, there's a time and place for everything. If you wanna drive like a maniac, there's plenty of race tracks where you can do just that. If you wanna drag race there are drag strips built for just that. The problem is the quality of our roads and the volume of traffic is not suitable for these kinds of driving habits.

Sure, Germany has the autobahn and many people wonder why we can't have unlimited speed if Germany has it and their road death toll is so much less. However the quality of the road surface on the autobahn is far superior than many road surfaces around the world. In addition it's actively monitored and the response time for an accident is a matter of minutes.

We don't have that here, so we have to make do with what we have. Also speed limits aren't thumbsucked out of some beaurocrat's ass, they're determined by traffic engineers who take into account factors such as the road condition, bends, traffic volume etc. Yes I am guilty of speeding on occasions doing 140 and sometimes 160 if the roads are clear and I'm the only one in the car. If I get caught I pay the fine because I was guilty of it. However that's nowhere near the insane speeds of 200+ that some bozo's do given the rubbish quality of our roads. There's a difference between putting one's own life at risk and putting the lives of others at risk.

So what do you drive? Bike and car.

I didnt say turn off the ESP you did so you prove yourself to be a moron... interesting.

People who cant afford nice cars say they are a waste of money... sure they lose a lot but if you have enough cash it doesnt matter.

Real transport? a Motorcycle? BWHAAHAHAHAAHAHHAHA wait wait BWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA.

I have a bike and it sure as hell isnt "real transport" it is a damn toy.
