Traffic demerit system launched

The most serious traffic offenders probably don't have licences anyway.

You really think so?
The quality of driving in South Africa is abysmal. Next time you are out and about pay close attention to the behaviour of our country's "drivers".
Note the woman taking her kiddies to school who jumps a stop street.
Note the businessman in his 4X4 who drives on the shoulder of the road to avoid traffic.
Note the young executive in his Porsche cruising at 170 on the highway.
Note the *hole in a 60km zone tailgating the one road user obeying the speed limit and flashing his lights and gesticulating like a baboon who's banana has been stolen.

No - alloytoo. The most serious traffic offenders are ALSO the normal everyday people you greet in your office on a daily basis.

moederloos, we all know the worst drivers possible are taxis.

This new law isn't going to affect them though, because even if their licences get taken away they are still going to carry on taxi-ing (?) people..

Nothing will stop that, its necessary for their survival.
It's just going to clamp down on us drive-normal folk

No, "we" don't.
Taxi drivers are not actually "worse" than most people I see these days (which is not to say they are not bad drivers - they are shocking).
However, almost EVERYONE drives like a ****ing ****er these days.

Anyways - anyone who drives like me, will have no issues. I have had 2 speeding fines in 18 years - the maximum was 76 in a 60.

This sums it up pretty well.

Everyone driving like a ***** nowadays is a direct response to the authorities failure to police the minibuses up front.

A fancy smancy demerit system is going to do squat.

you can say that again. The corruption in the traffic department will ensure those, esp. taxi drivers still beat the rap.

5 years from now the headlines in the papers will be what a failure this was...

Proper and effective policing is the first step, they must stop fscking hiding in bushes with cameras, and targeting hawkers selling stuff on the side of the road, and people who are trying to turn into slip-ways and do the actual core of their job. But you see, they're scared of the taxi mob so they target easy game instead i.e. regular motorists and during peak hours when people are trying to get to work.

That is just so wrong it is not even wrong.
People claiming they drive like idiots just because a taxi driver does are hiding behind paper-thin excuses.

Well, how do we explain the situation of people I encounter regularly on the road:

Who are constantly trying to do 120km/h in a 60 zone
Who tailgate
Who cut people off because they are in "such a hurry always"
Who generally drive kuk and are arrogant about their "right to the road"

Some of it is just a way of life it seems

I hope so too. Check the website, you get 50% discount on your fine if you pay within 32 days! I hope they will have an (online) credit card payment system.

EDIT: They will support online payments by the end of 2008.

just try for one week, driving in sandton, in rush hour traffic.
then tell me who the worst drivers are.
everyone drives like a pr*ck, but it's taxis that dominate.

Don't be surprised if fines are increased by 100% to maintain their profit margins. Most people are not going to care one bit about a demerit system.

It's not an excuse, it's an explanation.

People saw what they could get away with, and now everyone has followed suit.

The general lawlessness in the country needs to be addressed from the ground up.

Stop the littering, urinating in public that sort of nonsense and then work your way up the food chain.

The general populace will toe the line quickly enough. Then make sure the big fish fry long and hard.

Yeah +1 on that :(

Well - there we agree - although perhaps from a different perspective.
"Littering" is akin to breaking the road rules - and the "big fish" are the taxi drivers everyone seems to think are the real problem.

I - for the life of me - cannot even begin to get my head around the "I drive like that because taxi drivers do" argument. Do the people using these excuses also not bath, because "taxi drivers don't"?

Basically everyone wants to drive like the taxi-drivers, however the lack of enforcement of said taxi-drivers leads "everyone" to say "Frig-it" if that can, so can I.

Note.

"If they can, so can I"

is distinct from

"Because they do."

Maybe I am wired different.
I obey the road rules because they are there for a reason. I STOP at stop streets because, at the end of the day, it is my life and the lives of others that I endanger when I am an *hole.
What possesses some box to drive through a red light at high speed "because I could not stop in time" or other nonsensical garbage.
Why drive at 180km+ "because my car is designed for it and does not drive well at 120" or equal tripe?

heh

I agree with you 100%

My life and that of my family are worth more than a few minutes travel time.
