Transnet: "Complete and utter catastrophe"

The N1 between CPT and Joburg is also a sh!tshow. The amount of trucks is absolutely stupid. Seeing convoys of trucks in front of you is absolutely soul-draining.
Pick a road. Practically all the roads leading from the Northern Cape to PE harbour are destroyed by bazzillions of side tippers transporting manganese ore to the harbour. Once one road has been mangled beyond recognition, they move on to the next road.

I would literally trust children to run the country better than these oxygen thieves, and their disgusting muppets voting for them.

The collapse of South Africa’s rail and port utility, Transnet, has cost the country R1 billion a day in economic output, equivalent to 4.9% of annual GDP or R353 billion.

The situation at Transnet’s ports is so bad that Maersk — a global shipping and logistics giant — has had to start offloading cargo in Mauritius to allow smaller vessels to bring the shipments to South Africa.
Not a peep from the EFF...unless there's some Israeli products in those containers.

So i know we've all seen an increase in the number of trucks on our roads over the last few years but for me it seems to have exploded quite a bit more in the last 6 months.

have you seen the number of ships out to sea in Durban ? They lining up all the way up the coast and they havent moved in days.

The backlog is insane. And with all the cargo being pushed to planes that's getting delays too.

Expect shortages of a lot of items, the local stock can only hold so long.

How bad are the backlogs?

Is the issue not being able to unload the ships or is it due to not being able to get them shipped to the rest of SA?

I work down that side of the world so yeah see it every day and it pisses me off.

That's all the coal being exported. No wonder there are backlogs.

Current;y Durban Port is about 3 weeks behind. MSC and other shipping lines are charging I think about $200-250 per container for the delay.

These are not coal trucks.. Just normal trucks, but there is an increase in coal trucks in places you didn't normally see them.
What do you think is behind the sudden increase of trucks on the roads? Further deterioration of rail?

And yes, I do know what you mean as I travel to work daily in the N3.

As for the ports - I was landing in dbn the other day and was able to count 65 vessels parked out at sea between Dbn harbour and king shaka.
The ships continued further up north.

Yeah we saw this coming, so we flew in our requirements

+1 for competent procurement
I wish we could do the same, however the products we sell are quite large and shipping per product and at the quantity we move would put our shipping bill at R5.5m just to cover our Festive stock thats currently sitting outside the port. The actual cost of shipping these is around R500k by sea. So we would loose all our margin, and then some, if we moved the stock by air.
Current shipping time on our 1 container is at 75 days, on a shipment that usually takes 40.

Transnet has been in the **** for years, but as with all SOE's, its regressed even further and will continue to regress until we get these thieves out of government.

3 weeks+.
Our 1 container is currently on 30 days+.
Moving them around SA isnt the issue, Transnet lacks the capacity to offload due cranes being offline (not maintained and broken down) as well as too many unskilled staff who are unable to operate the cranes efficiently
