Transnet: "Complete and utter catastrophe"

This is from my daily port update today.

South Africa

  • Shortage on 20’ container
  • Most carriers implementing an Import Port Congestion Surcharge from December between 200 USD and 210 USD per TEU. Carriers that have not submitted a notice as yet may adjust their freight rates from December. GSL is the only line so far that implemented from November
  • South Africa reefer season November 2023 March 2024 – Limited export space during the season
  • Booking window +- 2 weeks

To put this into context, Pier 1 and 2 combined can handle 3700 containers a day.
Shekou, the fruit handling port of Shenzhen handles 11000, and thats just 1 section of their main port. Shenzhens port combined handles an averaged 82000 containers a day.

Edit : This is TEU - Twenty Foot-Equivalent Units

Nope, just rename it. That the winning strategy in Mzansi

This approach I agree with actually.

Few billion distributed to redo all the company branding will definitely fix the bad image the current entity has.

"It will take four-and-a-half months to clear the backlog at the Durban harbour, where about 63 vessels are still anchored and waiting to be processed. Transnet Port Terminals says it has already lost R160m since September and is likely to lose more."

They should use those aunties with the make-shift buckets. Ships will be clear in no time

How bad are the backlogs?

Is the issue not being able to unload the ships or is it due to not being able to get them shipped to the rest of SA?

Seeing one ship that arrived the 25th of Oct still waiting to unload.

It's unloading and getting them to all the freight companies depots.

Well since I am boycotting Woolworths, Dischem and anyone tied to the government, I guess my options are limited.

But thank you discovery. My measily one investment scored a Mega-Pint this past month.
