Hello all, I need some advice that will span wealth, leisure and relationships.

I want to do a 3 week Contiki tour through Europe with mate.

Problem is I have a GF and she can't afford to go (not because she is poor but because she is bad with money).

Do you think this is unfair and will I be pushing my luck if I go without her? She says it is OK but I kind of know deep down she won't be happy at all.

I am kind of in two minds about this trip, not only the GF but also its going to cost 50k and I have already been to Europe once before (was freaking awesome - longing to go back). I have the cash (and paid of car, pension etc) I don't own property as I'm toying in emigrating in the next 2 years.

How long you been with your gf?

Then stay at home. If you're going with a mate you there will be European shags involved. So you have 2 choices: 1. Stay with you current GF and use that R 50k for something nice to spoil yourself. 2. Leave your GF and go have the time of your life in Europe.

Nothing grey about those 2 scenarios.

A lot of sense the above makes.

is your girlfriend going with you?

Thanks for level headed responses guys.

I kind of know this but needed reinforcement.

Thing is I absolutely love travelling (been to quite a few places) and want to make the most out of my 20's while I still have little responsibility and free money as that def wont last forever. I guess sacrifices need to be made :(

If you're serious about GF, you can use R50k to go somewhere nice together. She can pay you back with an all-expenses paid trip to pound town.

ha ha. I did that last year (Thailand). I'm longing for Europe and I can't foot a R100k bill for 2.

You will be surprised. If we don't do all EU, just 2 or 3 countries it comes to the same price compared to a full tour. I've done the sums.

Traveling within Europe is cheap. Accommodation is the sink. R 50k won't get you guys far anyway depending on how long you going and where you sleeping at night.

Just getting there and back you looking at about R12k minimum. So that leaves you with R 38k for food, travel and accommodation. Eish...

Why dont you buy 2 cheap tickets to somewhere in Europe, get 2 inter rail passes and go around Europe by train?
Probably wont cost you R50k and you should have a much better time than a organized tour group.

yebo, if she hurries up with her studies.

She is a grand thinker, wants to do everything but some how fails to plan on how to get there.

Have you thought of maybe doing some joint saving?
Then when youve got enough you can go together and she would be in a habit of saving?

It doesnt have to be in even a joint bank account could be saved any means and with an excel sheet.

Guess some options would be
- In a jar at home
- She opens up a 7 day interest account on her name and her savings go in there
(the 7days restrictions stops her from just plundering the money at a whim)
- a joint account

Just an idea.
