Trouble acheiving Ketosis in Recipes

Ye Atkins and Keto are similar in that they restrict Carbs, but they are not the same thing. Atkins was more a low carb... high protein diet. Where keto is a low carb high fat diet. Atkins was on to something of course, that carbs are the true culprits of our obese society, but high protein diets put far more strain on your body than high fat diets do.

Atkins is NOT a high protein diet. Please see my post where 70% of my caloric intake was fat.

I posted ideas in the weight-loss thread already, but yes, fatty sauces. If you want to ensure that the sauce emulsion remains stable, then add mustard to the sauce to allow for a proper emulsification process. Or look at things like xanthan gum, but they have a distinct mouthfeel that's difficult to get away from...

Had trouble finding your posts in that thread to be honest. Partly for the size of the thread and partly for my lack of available time to sift through it, work is a little hectic at the moment.

I will start using your spreadsheet, I downloaded it yesterday and played around a little. Need to figure out a way to keep my ketosis going with traveling to a customer site from home. Packed Keto lunch is damn hard to figure out.
The only one that I have come up with is:
Cucumber, knife, cream cheese, tuna mayo, cheddar, tomato. And basically make cheese and crackers, without the crackers.

He is absolutely brilliant when it comes to ketogenic principles and the science thereof. I've been mentally devouring his work since I found it. Requires some basic grasp of science and biology to fully appreciate and I've at times had to go googling thing, but that's what learning is all about...

yeah, you have to mull on his stuff a bit :D

So according to you guys, me eating a 500g rump steak and nothing else for lunch will end my ketosis?

maybe we need to focus more on the ketogenic diet outside of the weight loss thread as not everyone in there is keen on following it and DrewChan really just started it to support a group of people trying to lose weight, some of us seem to have hijacked it a bit with our LCHF approach though  :D

Atkins is NOT a high protein diet. Please see my post where 70% of my caloric intake was fat.

It is advertised as one though. Sure you eat a higher amount of fat and you lower Carbs, but many articles around Atkins diets specifically state:
The benefits of a low carb, high protein diet. If in practice it is in fact a high fat diet and protein does not change at all, then Atkins articles are seriously miss-headered.

So according to you guys, me eating a 500g rump steak and nothing else for lunch will end my ketosis?

Depends. Were you even in a state of ketosis to begin with? According to Attia who cites his sources and explains the science in depth, the body will convert the protein to glucose and it will be utilised. Whether or not this kick you out of ketosis completely is entirely dependent on your body, how long you've been adjusted to a true ketosis state, number of ketones in your body etc.

I don't think that one steak will do the trick, but you wouldn't achieve true ketosis eating a 500g rump every day? If we can agree on that, then we can agree that protein does in fact influence ketosis...

as you've pointed out before a 500g steak is not 500g of protein :D

according to Peter Attia he recommends to keep your protein intake less than 150g a day but that also depends on your own physiology

Those articles are in fact incorrect. There is a LOT of misinformation around the Atkins diet.

From the atkins website:
Most people need a protein intake of between 25 and 30 per cent of your daily calories

And that's exactly what I was doing ...? Would you call that high protein?

Yes, I would, and have ;)
Only excessive protein intake and insufficient fat intake will influence ketosis, and eating "normal" food won't cause that.

Yup, it's probably about 150g of protein. But add that to the three eggs, bacon and cheese I had for breakfast, and the 400g of chicken I'll have for supper and I think I blow your limits way out of the water.

If what you're eating is knocking you out of ketosis, chances are excellent that there are some carbs hidden in there that you aren't accounting for.

why why why why why?Ketosis is bad. What happenend to just eating less of the same foods you currently eating and working out a bit more?I did Ketosis once while getting shredded for summer...worst moodswings ever!
In the long run, this is bad.You all need to stop the on and off dieting and make a permanent change to your lifestyle if healthy living is your goal.

Ketosis is NOT BAD.
Mood swings? Nope. I'm far more stable when I'm in ketosis.
What happened? The food I was eating was poisoning me. Should I just eat less poison?

Please take your uninformed opinions and klap gym charna. :p

nope, NK is not bad at all

the mood swings were probably related to other factors including your body going through the adaptation process

you are talking to a group of guys that have done/are doing lots of research into this particular subject so be careful with your assumptions

The mood swings were probably roid rage ;)

Just cook double for dinner, and mix and match for lunches over the next few days. For example, I have leftover cooked chicken breast, guacamole, picco de gallo (raw salsa), and roasted vegetables in the fridge. Here's what I did:

Chicken (1 small breast) - 69g
Roasted veg - 93g
Picco de gallo - 217g
Guacamole - 194g
Olive oil - 50g (I added it to the bowl)

It is absolutely bloody delicious. Looks odd, but tastes amazing. I'll add it to the calculator and post the results here.

Also note that I updated the app late last night so download the latest version instead of the one you have installed. It is much better...

We're pretty much in agreement. Let's not let this turn into a back and forth over details. The thread could be great for food advice...;)

Why on earth would you have mood swings?

In addition, you don't understand the science of what you're talking about. That much is evident...

I don't really want to derail this into an Atkins argument but:
Comparative Effects of Low-Carbohydrate High-Protein Versus Low-Fat Diets on the Kidney
An article on the Atkins site. As I said, if the Atkins practice is LCHF, then they are misrepresenting themselves by labeling many of their articles with LCHP as the focus.

I agree that your protein intake was not specifically high, I just point out that Atkins advertises itself as LCHP not LCHF, at least on the surface. Which is probably a mistake on their part.

OK cool, we can agree :)

I think they probably made a conscious marketing decision to call it high protein not high fat, because your average man in the street has been brainwashed to be terrified of dietary fat.
It's not high protein though :)
