Seems like Pretoria's days are numbered after seeing what was posted in the Government Gazette recently. Tshwane is now a geographical feature. That AFAIK was the only stumbling block to changing the name of Pretoria. There are calls for a review of the public participation requirements and whether they were followed but I think the ANC nailed this one by steamrolling it.

/me just shakes his head at the dirty tricks...

What was posted in the Guavamint Gazette antowan?

We always knew that it was pretty much going to happen, the buggers just had to try find a way of making it happen under the radar so to speak.

They registered Tshwane as a geographical feature. :)

Ahhhh ok.. thats an interesting tactic...

Geographic Feature of what I wonder though :p

As reported on the news, the minister that has that printed in the Gazette is "acting with malice", since there is still a court case pending the matter.

"The civil rights initiative, AfriForum, will meet with senior advocates in Pretoria tomorrow morning to consider legal steps with which the registration of Tshwane as place name can be set aside," AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said in a statement on Monday.

Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana used Tshwane as a name for Pretoria in the Government Gazette published on Friday, January 29.

AfriForum's legal representative Willie Spies said Xingwana's action spoke of "blatant malice".

"A lawsuit is still pending regarding the status of the name of Pretoria and this case was set to go to trial on the 25th and 26th of March 2010," Spies said.

AfriForum said Xingwana had sent a clear message she "does not respect the sub judice rule and the accompanying constitutional principle of the division of authority".

The minister's office could not be reached for comment.

Yup.....
They owed Eskom R500million in electricity fees from November alone...
The dustbins were skipped three weeks ago.... buggers striking again...

Now Zuma just has to sign the gazette and Tshwane is legal :@

Don't misunderstand the vanity of the powerful - they would rather have a fancy nameplate on the front door but drown in sewage from the broken toilet.

Well, at the rate that that municipality is falling apart, it's probably a really good idea that the name Pretoria is not associated with it.
People will stop paying for non-existant services, and the resulting chaos will be under the name Tshwane, and the name Pretoria will be remembered for a clean and well-run city.

Wonder how long it will take for "Republic of South Africa" to be changed? The way we are going, this country (and the people in it) will loose its identity.

Tshwane - the city where even the cockroaches have fleas. :D

I really wish the FF+ and Afriforum would find a different method of attack, though. They're taking it far too seriously. Every time they get their panties in a knot I can *see* the ANC giggling behind their hands.

I don't get it though? I thought only the metropolitan gets the name Thswane, but Pretoria will still stay Pretoria?

Kind of like Benoni still being Benoni, but it's part of Ekurhuleni??

According to the ANC, Pretoria is only a little part in the city centre.
