Hi guys,

I just got notification from Afrihost that I can finally get fibre at my address. The only provider option is a company called TT Connect. I've never heard of them before. Does anyone have experience with these guys? How is their speed? Worth having?

I'm with TT Connect and Cool a ideas. They're great! I got setup pretty quickly (about a week), guys at TT Connect were really friendly and helpful.

Even when I had a line fault, they updated me via phone calls and emails (with Cool Ideas) to let me know the status of everything.

In terms of speed, I'm on 20/20. I stream and game on EU servers. Haven't experienced lag or buffering at all.

That's great to hear. Especially since they are my only option.

How about installation? Did you need to wait long?

I seem to remember a thread where TT connect had gone MIA?

Weren't responding to calls/mails etc. Is this the same TT connect?

When I moved into my my place (Aloe Place 1 in Greenstone Hill), the infrastructure was already setup, so I moved in on the 31st of Jan (which is the day they came).

All they had to do was splice the cables and connect me. The next day, TT Connect came again and setup my Planet CPE. The day after that, I got my router from cool ideas and I was good to go! So setup started on Tuesday, was live on Friday. I'm not sure how long it will take if they are still digging up in your area.

In terms of cost, I only had to pay R500 for the instillation instead of R1500, but that was cause Cool Ideas allow for you to pay cheaper. I'm not sure how Afrihost works though.

Okay, those seem to be several months ago when they didn't cover much of the city (which is the case with everyone, btw). I received a mail from Afrihost to say they can now do my home. So if that's accurate, then I think I'll be doing that.

Thanks again.

Hey cobuskruger,

I got the same email from Afrihost over the weekend. What area are you in? My area, Highway Gardens had no Fibre before either and there has been no road work, digging or cable laying across the phone lines, so I'm still feeling doubtful that this area is good to go yet with Fibre.

Going to call them shortly and see what they know about it.

According the Afrihost sales representative (Siyabonga) on the phone at their customer contact centre, the area is equipped for Fibre with TT Connect. When explaining that there has been no digging or noticeable work laying fibre cables above or below ground through my street, he was unable to provide further clarification.
As he said (paraphrasing), "If it's showing on the system for this street, it must be ready in your area." The have a protocol and apparently don't display it on their system unless they have received word from the cable provider.

This is odd though as only last week I contacted a Cool Ideas representative on this forum who told me to email [email protected] for further help and they in turn informed me that while they cannot provide a turnaround time since TT Connect are responsible for the trenching of the fibre cables, it could be anywhere from 4 - 6 months.

This is very confusing and is leading em to believe that Arihost are wrong about this.

If you like, you can contact TT Connect directly to find out if they actually have installed Fibre there. I'll PM you their contact number, but I'm not sure who it might lead to cause it's the same number they called me on to install my Fibre line lol.

But it's worth a shot!

@Viper87 We didn't have the fiber installed in the last weeks or months. I think what happened is that Afrihost previously didn't deal with TT Connect. When they signed them up, they notified everyone with coverage.

I'm pretty sure I would have noticed fiber going in though, so I have a theory. I know there is DFA fiber just down the road (I noticed that going in ;) ) and TT probably added my street because they are willing to trench from there.

It's just a theory.

I'm waiting for my call from TT to arrange for installation and I'll keep a keen eye on what they do and report back.

I also received a email from Afrihost saying that Fibre is available in my area.

I stay near Highway Gardens and I have seen someone trenching and laying fibre up the road from me, about 500 metres from my house.

I applied for fibre through Afrihost on Sunday night, but I haven't yet heard from TT Connect. I am wondering how they are going to get the fibre to my house. If they are going to trench the 500 metres from up the road, or lay the fibre on the Telkom telephone poles - which will be a lot cheaper seeing as it will be to only one house.

Sure it won't only be to one house. Plenty of nearby residents will also be interested if they get the opportunity.

Yeah, I'm sure.

But what I mean is, I've made an enquiry, so they come trench to my house, then 2 weeks later someone down the road makes an enquiry and they trench to their house. It can be quite expensive for them.

Hi guys, I have contacted TT and was told, they will start with Edenvale-Edenglen area in 6 months time. Knowing how things work here, most likely year or two if we are lucky. There is no fiber available yet and Afrihost clearly made a mistake or they were just collecting info to see how many people will sign for fiber.

@LLoydizle - Thank for PM'ing the TT Connect contact number. Received a number from them before but it seemed to redirect through Fredd, this one seems more direct.

After roughly being told a few weeks ago that it could be about 6 months, I called the number again this morning to ask about this Afrihost email and the woman who answered the phone suggested it could be another year (:/) before they start laying fibre in this area. Although I have no idea how much knowledge she would have on the timetable for each area.

So it seems it could be anywhere from 4-6 months to a year. This is very annoying and confusing. Wishing they could get round to it already.

Sorry, Highway gardens will be minimum a year before we get there.

This might be a long shot, but if you asked for TT Connect, you either in Edenvale, Greenstone Hill or Bedfordview. Have you checked SADV? I remember someone once told me that SADV covers some areas around here?
