Tuning your ipod

Is the person who wrote this high? Fm transmitters have not only been around FOREVER but the quality is so far from satisfactory it's not even funny. If you thought the quality was decent, think again! I've tried every single fm transmitter available and not one was even close to adequate audio quality. Call me an Audiophile if you will but the sound is nowhere near satisfactory.

I tried an FM transmitter before and have to agree that the sound quality is nothing worse than what you'll get out of your car radio.

HOWEVER, driving between Centurion and Rivionia, I have not been able to find a single frequency (device has approx 14 preset frequencies available) that stays clear from interference or some other station broadcasting on the same frequency. If you stay put, it works fine, but don't dare move around.

I've got a front loader that has an auxiliary input which works wonders when one wants to connect an iPod.

But yeah, FM transmitters are SO two years ago...

These FM transmitters are so full of problems, it's not even funny. Just a few off the top of my head:

1) Poor audio quality, although MP3 isn't great to begin with.
2) They're typically designed for the US market (which allows such things)
3) Because of (2), wrong pre-emphasis leading back to (1)
4) Because of (2), different frequency steps/spacing leading again back to (1)
5) If it emits an RF signal it needs ICASA type-approval. No sticker, no approval.
6) No approval, not legal to possess/use.
7) If you're using one and getting interference from a broadcast transmitter, you're potentially also interfering with that licensed broadcast station. Not good.

Rather use a cable.

I get great reception from my Griffin iTrip. I'm on my second one now - the one with the digital readout which admittedly isnt as good as the original barrel shaped one that could be tweaked but still - no complaints.

It might be that we have plenty of dead air around PE or that I took my aerial off.

My experience with the iTrip wasn't so great I'm afraid. Rubbish sound quality, and I was always having the same problem that astrauss has, hunting around trying to find a quiet piece of spectrum. Virtually useless on long journeys, which is when you want it the most.

I'm curious though - I've got a VW with a factory fitted deck and a CD shuttle, which I never use. Not being much of a car audio nut, are there adapters (and places that'll install them) that can use the CD shuttle input to the deck for an iPod instead?

yeah, there is an adapter, for vw/audi that connects directly into the cd shuttle input of the radio,

Steering wheel controls then control the IPOD,

its AWESOME...

I originally had the iTrip 1 (barrel type), what a crock of ...

I now have the Monster iCarPlay wireless plus. The sound is better than any of the others that I've heard. I have very fine control over the frequencies and have absolutely no problems driving between Centurion and Rivonia, or Centurion and Durbs for that matter, not a single tone of interference. Slap it in my armrest console (which has a socket built in, go Subaru) attach my RF remote and forget about it, it even turns the iPod off when I shut the ignition off. The only time I see my iPod is when I re-org my music (which means would-be criminals don't see it either).

It was a little pricey but worth every cent!!!

There was a very simple hack that involved opening it up and wrapping a piece of wire around the internal aerial and it improved the sound quality no end. Wish I could find one. :(

Nice hack but my problem wasn't with the reception but the fact that it constantly lost the frequency I had set, very irritating!!!

Ok - that would be frustrating.

Roo does this thing really work? I have tried 3 different ones in my Subaru and they were all crappy. Went and looked can get one of those Monster iCarPlay for R700 but dont want to buy another thing that doesnt work properly?
