... Oh, and chuckling at codgers like sajunky railing at the cosmos. His existential pain is palpable...
Guys, don't listen to Microsoft moles like this one. The guy insulted me couple times already, now I see that offending posts had been deleted, so Arthur can look as a good guy again, not an ashole. Request mods suspension for at least half year.

Mole?

If you think my showing up your nonsense about OS/2 is an insult, then so be it. That's life on the internet, I s'pose.

As for being a Microsoft mole. Haha. I retired from Microsoft in 1997. That's nineteen years ago.

By the way, I've never deleted any posts. I stand 100% by what I said, because it's first-hand experience. I was there and directly involved. In IBM and Microsoft. The real problem is that the facts don't square with your narrative as you've retailed it here and elsewhere. Sorry that I burst that bubble. I truly am. I bear you no ill will whatsoever, though I'm not sure the obverse is true...

The only thing I want is a choice to be able to turn off any automatic process.
Telemetry is a good thing but I would like to be able to know what is being measured.

Let me give you an example.

I installed the WIN 10 upgrade in July/August last year on a win 7 machine. I had absolute hell until the 1511 build showed up. In the interim I posted lots of queries on the MS sites and got basically NO useful support at all.

The this year the first update on the 1511 happens and again the problems started.

This week I start getting mysterious calls from somewhere claiming they can help me with my WIN 10 machine. They are persistent, do not want to take no for an answer and tell me that my PC is reporting to MS that I need help.

How is this supposed to not make me suspicious, because after a clean install, I am now having zero problems? Did it take the "telemetery" almost a year to alert someone that I am having problems, or is there some spying going on?

The calls from "Microsoft" have nothing to do with telemetry. There are several operations, many based in India and environs, that go through lists they get on the internet, calling people to scam them. They can safely assume 9 out of 10 people they call who have PCs are using Windows, which has 1.5 billion users planetwide. I've received these calls while using Win XP, Vista and Win 7, as have many people on this forum.

The telemetry is normal stuff to check and report on system health. Almost all smartphones have it, to both Google and Apple (and others).

The US Dept of Defense has just announced it's upgrading all its PCs to Win10 within the next year. Do you think they'd be doing this if Microsoft was spying on them? It's because Win10 is much more secure than previous versions.

Windows 10 "spying" is another one of the internet conspiracy tales that seem to infect a certain segment of the population. The only cure is to connect a sniffer and check every outgoing byte for yourself.

Well they are very persistent and if it not the "telemetry" that is triggering these calls, it is these okes scanning the MS community and other MS sites for persons complaining about things.

It is quite a problem to get rid of them ..... They are very persistent. and yes the calls are coming in from India.

BTW, there is a better way to set things other than registry that works with win 10 Pro, not sure if the same would apply to win 10 Home.

use the gpedit facility and access the correct template and set it there. Much less risky than fiddling around in registry. see this website for the process. http://www.kapilarya.com/allow-or-prevent-telemetry-in-windows-10

Doing this disables user access to the settings in the settings menus so no one can reset the values on your PC without you knowing it. Unless of course they also know how to access group policies etc.)

The values set are 0 (enterprise only)
1 Basic
2 Enhanced
3 Full

What this does is create the correct entries in registry for you.

No posts have been deleted in this thread.

And two wrongs don't make a right...

Amen.

MickeyD, I think he must be referring to deletions from some other thread (I suspect the OS/2 one, which is the only one where we've had a contretemps; never been back to check). I've never deleted anything from there either, though some mod might have.

So go back and check if you remember what you did wrong (I am sure, you do).

You are mistaken. I don't know what you are talking about. Seriously.
You seem to be confused. It looks like you think I do accuse you for deleting your own offending posts. I don't, is is clear enough?

I do however remind, it doesn't happen the first time and Arthur is a repeated offender.

Thanks for taking the time to share Tera.

My issue is the p2p distribution of updates. I do not want to pay to distribute Microsoft updates thanks...

Verified just by Arthur - no offending posts found... Now Atrhur] looks again as a nice guy. [VBG]
OK. Got it. I'm really from the Evil Empire. All this nice is just a cover. So glad you can see through it.

Enough of this boring sidebar. Back to topic.

Those crash reports go out to guys like Raymond Chen who work with devs to fix bugs.

Working with end-users would be pointless.
